Hi All,
You should use any of Wilson Ober Clough's publications with GREAT care.
Besides the "Dutch Uncles and New England Cousins" book he also did a
typescript of the Clow family genealogy in 1964 that is available in some
libraries and, I believe, on microfilm from the FHL. In a 1974 copy he made
quite a few penned-in corrections to that same typescript and that is not as
widely available. The first typescript was published in condensed form in
the 1962-3 Dutch Settlers of Albany Yearbook. While I consider his work to
be useful I strongly urge you to compare his work against the original
underlying records. And by that I don't mean the FHL's IGI which has many
entries lifted straight from his work without any further verification.
In his work he consistently confuses birth and baptism dates. That's not a
large problem if you look at the underlying records. He consistently
interprets Jr. (Junior) to mean "son of" rather than the also possible
"younger of two similarly named people of the same community". This leads
him astray in a few cases. Worse, he seems to have a "tin ear" when it comes
to the Dutch convention of naming the first children after their
grandparents. This has caused him to place some children in the wrong
families. He sometimes corrects this by placing the same child in two
different families. I could go on here but I hope you all get my point. He
did a great job in digging up all the information he found but it needs to
be further refined before use.
Jim

Marilyn and all,
Thanks for the info on Liesl in Mt Pleasant.
A Friend lent me a book called "Dutch Uncles and New England Cousins" by a
Wilson Ober Clough, who was a professor Emeritus of English and of American
Studies at University of Wyoming.
The book was published in 1977.
He has traced his ancestors back to Franz Pieterz Clauw and his son
Jurrien. After that it branches off to another off-spring than our
ancestor.
It makes for very interesting reading.
If you can find a copy of it (probably out of print now), you might find it
worth reading.
