Other messages have referred to "The Surnames Of Scotland" by George F. Black, Ph.D.. The copyright is in 1946 and belongs to the New York Public Library.
A new edition was firstpublished in 1996 by Birlinn Limited, 14 High Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1TE. It was printed and bound in Great Britain by Cromwell Press and has the ISBN 1 874744 83 1.
This book refers to the name CLOW as being of local origin from the small place of the name in the parish of Dunning, Perthshire. In the listing of gravestones for Perthshire, there are many listed in the Muthill Parish Church Records which is located south of Crieff.
Greetings all,
I have researched my Clow / Cloe surname for about 16 years and have came to
believe the following.

I stumbled across some information once that shows the Clow surname as
English. I didn't look farther than that as this wasn't the information I
was looking for.

hello. me and my fiancee were discussing various origins of last names, and i realize i didn't have a clue where the name "Clow" comes from. i did a few web searches, looked at a few surname/geneology/etc databases, and anything else i could think of, but to no avail. then i happened upon this board, and figured someone here might be able to help me. is there a web site or database somewhere that i've missed? is "Clow" a word in another language that indicates the occupation of the first Clow? is it a city? a club? my curiosity is starting to overwhelm me. if anyone can help, please email me or post here. thank you.

Dear Mary, About Jacob E. Clow. I posted the note you responded to about a year ago and was off line for awhile. I am back now under a new e-mail address. Please e-mail me directly at Lcargill(a)mmcable.com. I am anxious to visit about our ancestors. I want to learn as much about the branches of my grandfathers family as possible. When doing this it seems to bring my grandfather Vernon Walter Clow back to life. Thank you Linda
Previously Dora737(a)aol.com I have been off line for awhile but I am back now and would love to hear from you about Jacob. I seem to have run into a brick wall trying to get past Jacob E. Clow. My grandfather has passed away now and I just keep feeling that if I can trace his line it will some how make me feel that he is still with me. Thank You Linda C.
