Hello,
I am new to this list. My only connection to Clow is Elizabeth Clow who married Nelson Graham around 1860s or 1870s. I don't know where and I don't have any birth or date records either. Does anyone have information about this person?
Thank-you!
Susan Jones

Looking for any help locating parents of John H. Clow. Here's what I
know.
John H. Clow was born about 1803 (or 1812) and died about 1853 in the
Highgate, Vermont and
Philipsburg, Quebec area. The homestead must have been hard on the
border because the family lore
is that if my great grandfather Lester had been born in the kitchen
instead of the bedroom he'd be
Canadian. I don't know if John H. Clow was a patriot, and Redcoat, or
a United Empire Loyalist.
He's said to be of lowland Scot ancestry by family lore and the family
names bear that out. I don't think
he's from the continent. I suspect his middle initial is for Hardick (or
Hardie) as he named his son
Lester.
Also aware that the border was resurveyed and a lot of Redcoats who
moved to Canada after the war
suddenly found them selves living in the US.
Family lore from his daughter in law who he lived with says Lester's
middle name is Hardick. An
LDS submission on John Clow (AFN:1JH2-VL5) says Lester's middle name is
Hardie. There are
family names Hardie, but none Hardick...a confusing deal.
He married a woman who was born in England, Catherine Dorothy Smith (AKA
Dorothy Catherine
Smith) who was born in 1807 ( or 1816) and died in 1904 in Illinois.
>From family lore and an old LDS listing John and Catherine had children
Catherine Cornelia Clow b.
1838, Mary Hidelia Clow b. 1839, Harriet Ellen Clow b. ?, Lester
Hardick (or Hardie) Clow b
1843 (my great grandfather), Samuel Alfred Clow b. ? , and Harriet
Adeline Clow b. ?.
All the children were apparently christened en masse at the Anglican
church in Philipsburg, Quebec on
April 27, 1855 after John died. I'm guessing there was a conflict of
beliefs, a conversion, or maybe the
church finally came to town.
After John died, Catherine moved to Paxton Illinois with all her
children except one of the daughters
who stayed in Highgate and married a man named Ross. The family moved
on to Chicago. Two of
the daughters never married and ran a millinery store in the Chicago
area.
Lester Hardick Clow 11/2/1843-10/24/1936 Pierre, SD married in Paxton IL
on 9/5/1868 Adella Jane
Taft. b.1849 in Ridgeway, NY and d. about 1/5/1878 in child birth.
They had three children. Irma
Clow who married into the Raver family (if there are any Raver's out
there I have old photos), my
grandfather Byron Lee Clow (curious where the name Lee comes from) b.
12/25/1872 in Evanston,
IL and d. 2/12/1960 in Portland, Oregon. The child born when Adella
died was also named Adella and
given up for adoption in Sparta, WI. My grandfather tracked her down
shortly before she died in her
40's of cancer. She never married or had children.
A cyber cousin also has a listing in a Taft family bible that my family
had never heard of for another
child of Lester and Adella, a Gracie Clow.
After Adella died Lester remarried Cordelia 'Delia' Franck b. about 1859
in Beaver Dam, WI
8/8/1880 and they had children Franck Alice Clow, Dorothy Iris Clow
(I'm guessing after Lester's
mother), Dudley Sabastian Clow, Louise Markham Clow, and Ruth Delia
Clow.
I corresponded with Louise before she died, but she knew nothing of
Lester's parents or grandparents.
Lester was a lumberman and worked around Wisconsin, Minnesota, and South
Dakota, eventually
planting in Pierre SD and becoming a local figure. Byron was a deputy
sheriff then land commissioner
across the river in Ft Pierre, SD then homesteaded in Roy, Montana in
the early 1900s. He moved to
Portland, OR in his later years.
Happy to share what I have with anyone who connects. Doesn't look too
hopeful due to the
independent status of Vermont back in John's time.

Hi Groups,
Many of you have asked me, over the past year, when I
was going to get my web pages back up. Well, I'm happy
to say I've finally made a start. (The main question
was if I'd have the Clough-L/Clow-L chat room back up,
and I'm afraid the answer to that is "not yet." I'll
let you all know when and if that happens.) I do
finally have a few pages up though. I've started with
my "Joyal" line, and have one "Stevens" page up.
You'll notice on the index page that I have a link to
1. the Clough-L/Clow-L pages, and 2. to the Hoisington
pages.
Please NOTE that genweb has been down for the past week
or so. So, those two links won't work. Hopefully Randy
can fix the problems at genweb and the Clough-L/Clow-L
pages will be back up and running soon. But, right now
I can't even get e-mail through to him.) We'll keep you
posted on that situation.
Also please note that much of what I have up isn't
Clough/Cluff/Clow related. (I do have a photo of
my grandmother, Eva Clough in the Joyal pages.)
Nevertheless, If you'd like to drop by and visit
you're welcome to do so. (No guest book up yet
either. As I said, just the basics at this point.)
Oh, one final thing. If you have access to Internet
Explorer, that's the browser of choice to use for
viewing these pages. There are many things that
aren't woking in Netscape, so you'll miss a lot
if you view it with Netscape right now. (Like
the music.) I'll work on getting things working
for Netscape users, but if possible using IE works
a lot better.
If any of you have a site of your own you'd like me
to link to, send me a note with your URL.
My new URL is:

Surname: Clow, Cloe, Walters, Burns, Bridwell
-------------------------
Where is the information on middle names of James Scott Cloe that was the
father of William Clow Documented? Also, has anyone found Elizabeth Walters
in the 1860 Census? Also the marriage of James Cloe Jr, and Elizabeth Bridwell?
Margaret Cloe married Josiah Snoddy, and she died in Dade County, MO 5
Oct1894. I had tried to find an Obit. for her but was not successful. Please
respond if you can help me here.
