There were Clouses found early on in several counties of northern Kentucky. As I recall, along with Garrard/Jessamine there were some in Daviess and Hardin (which is a few counties west of Garrard/Jessamine).
I don't know that James Wesley Clouse ever went to Montgomery, but maybe he did. I haven't located him prior to 1850. It's possible he traveled to Indiana with family when younger before returning to Kentucky. I've always suspected the Clouses were traveling back and forth across the state line, either for work or staying with family.
There has been one particular are of confusion that has intrigued me endlessly. It is the connection of the names James and Wesley.
I know James Wesley Clouse was in Brown Township, Washington County. This is adjacent to Orange and Lawrence Counties where he also resided. Here are the records showing James Wesley in Brown:
http://www.genealogytrails.com/ind/washington/brown.recordsof03.html
He is listed variously as James Wesley Clouse, J. W. Clouse, and Wesley Clouse. I'm fairly sure all the entries are referring to the same person as he and his children are the only Clouses that I've found in Brown during the 1870s and 1880s.
His Civil War draft record shows him in Bono Township, Lawrence County. That is the first record I can be certain of his being in Indiana. And after being in Brown, he along with at least some of his children returned to Lawrence. It is in Lawrence where it gets most interesting.
My Clouse family spent a good amount of time in and around Spring Mill Village. James Wesley was there. Many of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren lived or were born there (my great grandfather Willie and his twin sister Lillie were born there in 1894). One of his grandchildren, Lucile (daughter of James R.), is buried there. The Clouses were among the last to squat there after the mill was closed.
More importantly is the main distillery at Spring Mill. The Hamer brothers bought Spring Mill in the early 1830s. A Wesley Clouse supposedly was the first distiller, according to The Village That Slept Awhile. He was distiller until William Dalton took over in 1847. To add to the intrigue, James Wesley's son James R. married Emma Dalton (granddaughter of William) prior to marrying Lula Hawk (and Charles E. Clouse, son of William Edward and grandson of James Wesley, married Lula's sister Lucy).
I found some family records, I believe from down at the Mitchell genealogy center. They were submitted by a Beulah Clouse Davis. The family records claimed that James Wesley was one of the last distiller. According to A History of Spring Mill Village, "George and possibly Charles Clouse . . . hired by Turley at distillery." Turley was the last owner before it closing down and the distillery was the last part of the operation to still be running until finally closing for good in 1896, 7 years after James Wesley having died. George would probably be James Wesley's son George Denis and Charles would be James Wesley's grandson Charles E. (my great great grandfather).
By the way, here is a page from a 1870 whiskey ledger:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/32879779/person/18348410083/media/29dce38f...
It shows a Sam Clouse and Geo Clouse. This might be James Wesley's sons, Samuel Mack and George Denis.
The Clouse family was heavily involved in the distillery business during the 1800s, until they were forced to find more respectable work. This might be what drew them to Indiana with all the new mills being built for where there are mills there are distilleries.
It is very very curious that James Wesley and family ended up at Spring Mill working as distillers a few decades after a Wesley Clouse was working as a distiller there. Is that just a coincidence? Could this Wesley Clouse be James Wesley Clouse or a relative of his?
I'm not sure exactly when the Hamer's distillery was first operational. If it was in the 1830s, James Wesley would have been too young as he wouldn't even been a teenager yet. However, if it wasn't until the 1840s, it is possible that James Wesley could have been working there. When William Dalton took over in 1847, James Wesley was around 20 years old or so. That is plenty old for his having been working a number of years. But what is the likelihood of the Hamer brothers hiring a teenager as their first distiller?
If not James Wesley, who is this earlier Wesley Clouse?
I also wonder about the Montgomery Clouses. Other than this Wesley Clouse, some of the earliest Clouses in Indiana went to Montgomery. A George Clouse from Garrard KY bought land in Montgomery in 1830. That would been a decade or maybe less from when the Wesley Clouse was working as distiller at Spring Mill (in the 1830s or 1840s). So, what is the connection between the Garrard Clouses that went to Montgomery County and the Garrard Clouses who ended up in Lawrence Country (Spring Mill and Mitchell, as well as surrounding counties such as Washington)?
How can we prove where James Wesley was before 1850? How can we prove who his parents and siblings were? There is a 20 year unknown period between his being born in Kentucky and getting married in Kentucky. I've done absolutely no research on the ground in Kentucky and so I'm at a loss to even speculate at this point. But I'll keep hammering at it.

I have not learned more, but I think the only way to do that is to make a trip to Jessamine County, KY where the Fains are. There is little to no information online for Patsy.
Part of the problem is that back in the time we need to look, the Kentucky River that separates Garrard and Jessamine was not dammed and it was easy to cross on foot/horse. Their property was on the river in Garrard, but Jessamine appears to have been where they socialized more. I have found Clouse records in both places, and while the earliest records I've found are in Garrard in 1806, they appear to have shifted to Jessamine over time. The Fains appear to have been only in Jessamine, where I have not spent much time. That would be where I would look next for confirmation of that marriage and possible wills/deeds that might give parentage.
I think there is definitely some familial relationship between George and William. They both went to Montgomery County, Indiana although William went several years after George. Last year I found a record in Montgomery County that shows that all of the brothers/cousins - George, William, James and Samuel - were there in the mid 1840s. But since James Wesley and Sarah were married in 1848 in Jessamine, he must have gone back or James Wesley didn't come to Indiana with William, but came later after his marriage.
Have you been able to locate any other descendants of William and Patsy, through James' siblings? I have done some work to figure out who they married and some of their descendants, so maybe we can track them down.
