Shirley,
What a fantastic job you have done on the cleanup! I looked it up on Findagrave and saw the difference in the pictures - beautiful! Thank you for doing this for all our future Clouse generations.
As an aside, I looked up tax records for George Clouse (our common ancestor) at the Historical Society of Washington County, VA today. Instead of being located in Washington County, VA through 1787 as I have seen frequently reported, the tax records show that he was there through at least 1794. As he is reported to have died in 1810 in Washington County, TN, I have often wondered where he was during those "missing" years and so was very happy to locate him this much later. The records from 1791-1794 are spelled Clouce.
Again, great work on the Clouse Cemetery. I was happy to find it posted online. Any chance of posting additional pictures? Feel free to e-mail me directly at armstrong2224(a)yahoo.com if you'd like to compare notes sometime.
Cathy Clouse Armstrong

Thanks for your reply. There is indeed a family cemetery. It is the Clouse Cemetery in what was Shellmound, Tn. It still exists because it is on "high ground". It looks out over Nickajack Lake and probably the rest of Clouse land. My George Washington Clouse may very well rest there but in an unmarked grave. At least 3 of his sons are buried there. There are markers for William C Clouse, James P Clouse, and according to death certificates another son, George Buchanon Clouse is also there. My husband, son and myself have reclaimed this cemetery from nature. Technically it is owned by TVA but we clean it, and I claim it. All internments are related to me by blood or by marriage.

Census records of 1830 and beyond show that this George Washington Clouse (son of Aaron Leatherman Clouse) were in the Shellmound area of Marion County, TN by 1830. Supposedly the land they owned was on the edge of, or in, the area that was later dammed and is now covered by Nickajack Lake. I have not researched this further because they are not my direct line, but a search of land records in this area might confirm it. If they were buried on family land, as were so many in that era, it may no longer be accessible. I don't know what year the lake was created.

I was looking for the parents of a Grace CLOUSE, b 9 May 1897 Putnam Co., TN, d 4 Dec 1900 Los Angeles Co., CA, m 22 Aug 1920 Putnam Co., TN,, Steve DIXON, b 31 Oct 1896 Putnam Co., TN, d 4 May 1972 Los Angeles Co., CA.
A Grace CLOUSE was shown in the 1900 Putnam Co. (Civil Dist. 14), TN, census as the three-year-old dau (b Feb 1897) of a James CLOUSE with wife Mary I have discovered, however, that the census taker was in error: the head of that household was John CLOUSE, not James. In fact, he was John Newton CLOUSE, twin to William Jasper CLOUSE, both of whom I already had in my database.
I still cannot say with certainty that John Newton CLOUSE's dau Grace CLOUSE is the female of the same name whose parents I am searching for, but it is interesting that Grace CLOUSE never appears again after 1900 in John N. CLOUSE's household.
I found in the 1910 Putnam Co., TN ( Civil Dist. 5), census the Grace CLOUSE who later m Steve Dixon living in the household of her grandfather (per the census), Thomas W. OFFICER, and in the 1920 census, same civil district and county, in the household of her uncle (per the census), Bailey OFFICER.
Interestingly, this Grace, with the married name Grace Dixon, was shown in the California Death Index as having had a father whose last name was OFFICER, not CLOUSE, but I have no idea who the informant was, as husband Steve DIXON had died in 1962 and only known child, dau Nora Belle DIXON (perhaps named after Nora Belle CLOUSE, 1876-1899), died in 1944.
The best conjecture I have is that this Grace CLOUSE was connected to the OFFICER family through the marriage of Emily BROWN to Thomas S. CLOUSE; Emily later married Thomas William OFFICER, but I have found no children from that union.
This is a conundrum. Any ideas?

George Washington Clouse of Marion Co., Tn was my 3rd great grandfather. Do you have any idea where he is buried? I know where his son William is buried and I suspect that George is nearby. Shirley Quarles Clowers
