Hi Folks,
I am new to the list and hope that this is the correct list for my query.
Please let me know if you do not include the name Clowes.
I would like to exchange information with anyone who may have an interest in
the family of John Mitchell(or Minchell) Clowes and Isabella Scott Gordon
(daughter of Thomas Gordon & Martha Rodgers). John was in the British Army
and they married at Barony, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1844 prior to going to
South Africa where they raised a large family. Their eldest child was my
husband's great-grandmother Margaret Johana Gordon Clowes.
I believe one of her siblings was Annie Scott Gordon Clowes. The family
travelled to the US abt 1874 and returned to England abt 1877. Margaret
married in 1863 and remained in South Africa when the family moved.
Would love to here from anyone who may know of the Gordon family in
Lanarkshire or may have an ancestor with the distinctive Gordon Clowes name.
Regards
Kerry Anne Merry

This is great - I would love to see that book and if you give me the exact title, I'll find it here I'm sure. I am only about 30 minutes from downtown Columbia, SC where the state library and the university library are located.
I really appreciate your help.

According to Virginia history books in my local library (which is small, so if mine has it in Texas, many other small towns may have these), Phettiplace arrived in 1608 from England on the ship Starr at the age of 15. It would be surprising if he had a son with him when he arrived at that age. A William Cloues (sic) was married to Sarah Moore ca. 1699, but her maiden name was Woodhouse (father Henry Woodhouse). Prior to marrying William Cloues, she was married to John Sanford/Sandiford/Sandeford and Cason Moore. I will get the exact name of the book when I go back later this week and post it here (one of them was something about Ancient Planters). There is nothing in the book directly tying William to Phettiplace, other than they lived in the same area of Virginia (Princess Anne County by 1700). Phettiplace's last name in various books was also spelled Closs/Cloyse/Clous. He was also a member of the House of Burgesses and, as such, makes me wonder why a will or estate papers!
have never been found.

My line of Clouse came from Germany in 1605 - Phettiplace Clouse arrived in Virginia, he brought with him his son William (1612-1699)he married Sarah Moore from Virginia according to my research. I believe he was married previously to Elizabeth Laudermilk before immigrating. I do not know if any others came over at the same time.
William did pass away in Pennsylvania, his son Wm, Jr moved to Tennessee, but there may have been other siblings who stayed in PA.

I have seen trees that have "my" Christopher as a descendant of Phettiplace but I have not found enough evidence (yet) for the link.
I'm still searching though.

I am related to the Christopher Clouse ( Anna Catharina Hench) Clouse line that lived in Washington County PA. There are some trees that link the Tennessee & Pennsylvania Clouse families but I have not found sufficient proof for the connection, yet.

How are you related to the Clouse family in Pa.? My 2nd great maternal grandfather was George William Clouse born in Germany married to Martha Rebolt/Rebold also born in Germany. According to family stories George came to America with his mother and siblings before the 1850 Pa. census. He met Martha in Allegheny Co., Pa. and they later moved to Armstrong Co., Pa. I've not found immigration records as to when the Clouse or Rebolt/Rebold family came to America. The Clouse name may have been spelled Klaus.
