Message Board Post:
F. Charles Clouse and his family came to New York in 1852, first settling near Buffalo, NY, then moved westward ending near Fort Dodge, Webster Co., Iowa.
They arrived on the packet ship Albert Gallatin at the port of New York on 30 April 1852.
The "List or Manifest of all the passengers taken on board the Ship Albert Gallatin whereof John E. Salter is Master, from Harve..." includes:
Carl Claus, age 47; Elizabeth,40; Carl, 18, Joseph, 10; Mathias, 8; George, 6; Bernard, 4; Catherine, 3; Louis, 1 ½
There were 471 passengers named and 1 ½ year old Lewis is listed separately from the rest of the family.
The tall tombstone in the Corpus Christi Cemetery in Fort Dodge, Webster County, Iowa says that F. Charles Clouse and his wife Elizabeth were from Alsace. Family tradition from Mathias' line indicates their roots were around Colmar whereas, Catherine's daughter wrote that the family had lived in a small town outside Strassburg where F. Charles Clouse owned a small amount of land and was a shoemaker by trade. I have not been able to confirm either of these traditions.
Does anyone have more clues to help find the Claus/Clouse family in Alsace?
