What you say is true. it is so frustrating to find the same naming patterns wherever you find Clouse families. In the Sussex Clouse's alone, Leonard had a Jacob, my line had a Jacob, and then there's this other Jacob line. I always think that nowadays if you find families in such close proximaty they are not necessarily related, but back then, the population was so much smaller. Actually, too, some of my Clouse line branched out first to Iowa, then to Illinois, and finally settled in Nebraska. I do think my line originated in Pennsylvania.

I think I've found the census image for the two families you mention, Jacob's and William's. William has a young daughter, Sarah E., but she is too young to be my g-grandmother. I have so little to go on here but the given naming patterns. My Sarah (Clouse) Whittle had eight children, as did her mother, named: William, Eva, John, Sarah, Edward, Gertrude, Ida, and Walter.
There is a census entry for a Henry Clouse, age 30, in 1870 Philadelphia with seven children and wife named "Elitha"--no occupations, no birthplaces. One daughter is Sarah, about the right age to be my great-grandmother, Sarah (Clouse) Whittle. Another daughter is named "May"--which makes me wonder if May might be the aunt of Sarah (Clouse) Whittle's daughter, Ida, making them both namesakes of Sarah's granddaughter, my aunt Ida May. Also wonder if Elitha Clouse could be "Sarah Elitha"--another "Sarah E.". The 1900 census names my g-g-grandmother, Sarah Clouse, b. August, 1831, living with her spinster daughter, "Mima", indicating that Sarah had given birth to eight children, four still alive in 1900--Henry Clouse's wife Elitha had seven children surviving by 1870.
It can be frustrating...and these naming patterns do repeat in a lot of Clouse households outside of the PA-NJ area. If I find factual indications that these Clouse men are related, I'll share them with you.

There is also another Clouse family located in Warren County. This family is headed by Jacob b. 1830 in Pennsylvania. Many of the same family surnames here. On the 1870 census, this family is living on a farm right next to my family is Sussex County.

There is always a chance we may be looking for related Clouse family branches. I wish that I could be of more help to you at this point--maybe as I glean more information from my living family's attics. My g-g-grandmother was Sarah Clouse, a widow, in Philadelphia, and I am stymied to identify her husband's first name or her own maiden name. Sarah and her husband were both born in Pennsylvania, as indicated in the 1880 census entry for her and some of her offspring. In 1880, she had three daughters living with her on LeHigh Avenue, Mima, Eva, and Sarah, as well as Sarah's husband William Whittle, a blacksmith, and son William. Sarah (Clouse) Whittle bore a total of eight children and her daughter, Sarah (Whittle) Gracie, was my grandmother. Some of the Clouse-Whittle descendants lived in nearby areas of New Jersey.
I am starting to work on the Clouse and Whittle siblings and trying to find vital records for Clouse and related Whittle individuals in Philadelphia. I have had no success online in identifying an 1860 census record for this Sarah Clouse which might reveal her husband's given name.

Wondering if anyone has yet to make a connection between the Clouse families of New Jersey. My Clouse family line stems from Jacob b. 1770 who married Abigail Dickerson. Wondering if he might be a brother or cousin of Leonard as there is only about 10 years differences in ages. Both families seem to have the same surnames such as John, Jacob, Mary Ann, etc. Hoping that somone has been able to connect these families.
