Nothing like stealing someone's thunder! I was in the midst of double
checking the dates when this message arrived. What I have for Thomas is
that he was born in Washington Co., Virginia in 1710. I have not seen
anything other than other researchers information on this fact. I have
noticed that MANY are stating his birthplace as White County. I am not
sure when the first Clouse moved into White County, but I know many are
recorded as being born in Washington and Unicoi Counties in Tennessee prior
to the White County migration.
Washington Co., TN is on the NC border and was formed from Washington Co.,
NC when Tennessee was made a state. With Clouse connections to both
Washington Co., Tennessee and Washington Co., Virginia it is easy for
errors to be made in switchinig the states when recording information.
As for George Washington Clouse having a brother, Christopher, it is
possible, but again, I have seen nothing firm on there being any siblings.
One thing is sure - the Clouses left few footprints as they passed through
Virginia! In the Virginia land records there are only three grants that
mention a CLAUSE and one for CLOUSE. There are no records for CLOSE,
CLASE, KLOSE, KLASE, or KLUSE.
The earliest land record is for Phettiplace Clause:
GRANTEE Clause, Phettiplace.
DATE 2 December 1628.
Description: 100 acres on the Easterly side of Warwicksqueake River,
northerly on the land of Rice Jones. [a squeake is a swamp. River now the
Warwick River.]
GRANTEE Clause, Henry. grantee. [DOES ANYONE KNOW OF HIM?]
DATE 24 July 1788.
NOTE Location: Monongalia County.
NOTE Description: 1400 acres adjoining Ramsey and Cox's Ninth and Doctr
Says Second Entries.
GRANTEE Awell, Christopher.
DATE 12 September 1733.
Note Location: Spotsylvania County.
Description: 124 acres in the great fork of the Rappahannock river. Adjoins
land of Michael Awell, his own and Michael Clause. [HOW ABOUT MICHAEL?
ANYONE?]
GRANTEE Clouse, Samuel.
DATE 1 December 1852.
NOTE Location: Ritchie County.
NOTE Description: 16 1/2 acres on waters of north fork of Hughes River.
While not close enough for a cigar, there is this:
GRANTEE Klyce, Christopher.
DATE 14 July 1801.
NOTE Location: Rockbridge County.
This is how someone has him in WorldConnect -
Name: Christopher "Christian" (Clyce) KLEITZ
Sex: M
Birth: 3 JAN 1751/52 in Rostock, Germany
Death: 5 FEB 1829 in Rockbridge, Virginia
There are hundreds of land records from several of my other lines and it is
disheartening to find so few Clouses.

Hi Gus-
Thomas Clouse could not have been born in White County TN in 1710,
because it did not exist until 1806. Here's a link to the White County
website:
http://www.tngenweb.org/white/
My husband's Clouse line was in TN pretty early, with George Clouse
born abt 1740 (location unknown, but possibly VA) who died at Greasy
Cove, Washington County TN in 1810. I don't know who George's fatner
was-this is the line that some people have said goes back to a
Phettiplace Clouse, but I have not seen proof of this. His son John
Dillard Clouse born abt 1775 (location unknown) died 20 Nov 1859 in
Cedar Creek, White County TN. John had a son Thomas Jefferson Clouse
born 08 Jan 1801 in Washington County Tn who died 18 July 1872 in White
County. Is this possibly the Thomas Clouse you are seeking? If so, he
had a BUNCH of children, by at least 2 different wives.
Good luck!

I have his children as Christopher Clouse and George Clouse. I have
Christopher born 1776 and George about 1740. That is allot of years
between children, so I wonder if this is correct. Christopher is listed as
being born in Pennsylvania and married Anna Catherine Hench. George is
listed as being born in Virginia and marrying Elizabeth Jarvis. Thomas is
from the line of Phettiplace Clouse. Thomas would have been my
ggggggrandfather. Thanks. Daniel (Gus) Clouse

I only have Thomas Clouse (no other info except name) as the father of George Washington Clouse (1740-1810). Last time I heard there has been NO substantiated proof that Thomas is in the Phettiplace Clouse line. If that proof has been found, I'd like to hear what it was. Assumed, but never proven.
George Washington Clouse married Elizabeth Jarvis and had a son named John Dillard Clouse (b. 1775 in VA - d. 1859 White Co., TN)

If, as several worldconnect files have it, Freelove Clouse was born in
Tennessee in, or about, 1788, then she would likely be a daughter of George
Washington & Elizabeth [Jarvis?] Clouse. If not, then it is likely that
she is a daughter of an unknown brother of George Washington Clouse.

Meg,
My GGG Grandmother was Freelove Clouse. She was born in TN, and I believe
it
may have been White Co. but I don't have any records on that. Freelove
married Arthur Edwards of TN and they eventually moved to Clarke County,
Iowa, where
they are buried. I was wondering if you have any record of Freelove Clouse
in your line.

We don't get many Clouse messages, so I had to write. But, sorry I'm not
aware of any of my Clouses going from Michigan to Oklahoma.

Hello, My name is Lisa and my grandmother's name was Josephine Clouse, I was wondering if this name sounds familiar to you or any of your family. I have found her in a 1920, and an 1930 census. By then she had married my grandfather Erick Erickson. If you could help me in any way I would be very grateful. Thank You, Lisa

Hello Susie,
I would tend to agree with you, as the name is not all that common. My Leonard tended towards biblical names for his children, but this could have been the wife's inclination. Your Chirstopher is certainly in the right date range to be a closer connection - as you say it's finding it. I'm just stuck against a brick wall of Leonard being born ca 1765 in Sussex Co. NJ. Don't have a map handy but I believe that PA is right there close.

Hi Michael Clouse,
My Clouse family is from the Christopher Clouse b 1745, d 1821 who was in the revolutionary war. He was from Pennsylvania. I don't have any information before him except his father was also a Christopher. Truthfully I think with the name Clouse would all be related if the connection could be found.

Hi Richard
Thanks for offering your help.My grandfather William Chester Clouse was born in Jay County. His father was George W. Clouse, His father was Andrew K Clouse married to Marietta Taylor. I first found them in 1860 living in Jackson township in Blackford Co. They had gotten married in 1860 In Jay. Co. In 1870 I found them in richland township in Jay Co. and that is where he lived till he died in 1898. Some of his sons moved to Michigan with his widow then a few years later 2 sons and widow moved back to Ind. around the same location.
I can't now find any info on Andrew before 1860. I did find Marietta's parents and siblings. Any help would be so helpful Tina.
