My uncle was in Colmar, Alsace, during WWII and apparently found Matthias's birth in the parish records there. I don't really have much real info beyond old Charles, but have lots of ideas. I don't have your e-mail address, that I can find, so please contact me at sybj(a)aol.com if you want to chat more and share info. Thanks.

Yes. Buffalo is in Erie Co. The story I heard from my grandmother or her sister when I was a child is that the older borthers came over to work on the Canal. That didn't jibe with history until I looked it up and they were re-doing the canal at about that time. So it may be true. I can't figure out how to email you directly but if you want to communicate directly, my address is sybj(a)aol.com

I am not at home now, so don't have access to my records, but I know that Bernard stayed in Buffalo, NY briefly after emigrating to the U.S. Is that where Erie County is?

Oh Sybil, this is soooo exciting. I think we have finally found a connection. These families must be connected. All the family names are the same. This is the first time I have ever seen a place in Alsace. Please contact me so we can exchange information but I think you may have much more then I do at least going back in the generations. Also interesting is the Elizabeth Fisher and the Affra Fisher. Would like more information about that family if you have it. What a wonderful discovery. Thanks for responding to this query!!!! Oh happy day!!!

Oops! I actually got out my notes this time. Yes, it looks as if Charles and Bernhard were older brothers of my great grandfather Mathias Clouse, b. 1843, Colmar, Alsace. He was in Dubuque Co. in 1870, married, and had 2 younger brothers born in Erie Co. NY. I had heard that there were four older brothers (than Mat). Their parents are Charles Clouse, b. Alsace 1802, d. Ft. Dodge, Webster co. Iowa 1880, and Elizabeth Fisher, b. Alsace 1810, died Webster Co after 1880.I can also provide some info on younger sibs, if you want it. I'm looking for Charles's father. Any info?

Thanks. Bernhard and his brother Charles look more like sons of my Charles' brother, by date. The locations are good, as mine moved to Dubuque later in the 1850s. Supposedly, my Charles's father died in Ohio, also an immigrant, before 1893, but I've had no luck finding his name. It looks to me as if the whole family moved over serially, first coming to the Erie area. My Charles and his sons Mathias and Lewis definitely were in Dubuque Co and later Ida and Webster Counties in Iowa.
