Hi Sheila,
Timothy Stainthorpe Clough began life as Timothy Stainthorp b.1811 his father was Benjamin Stainthorp and his mother was Martha Clough.
Timothy married Jane Lightowlers in 1830 and they had 9 children I think one of whom was Lightowlers Stainthorp born 1846. Lightowlers it seems was not the best of children his criminal record I think is what caused the name change.
He was charged with robbery with violence in June 1869 and in the 1871 census Timothy had changed his name to Stainthorp Clough,
Hope this helps. Sue
