Judy's question

Clark gave a great response regarding the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The 2 towns you mentioned are probably hard to locate because they may be
misspelled. The person who wrote them down in English was more than likely
spelling the word they heard and not the way it is spelled in the
native land.
The Slovak languages do not all use the same alphabet or English spelling as
we do, so when it is transcribed to English to go on a map, it is done by
learned professionals. But the people in the immigration office, the
shipping
office, or wherever those town names were written, most likely used their
best
guess.
That same applies to names of persons as well as towns.
You might look on the Internet to see if there is a map of Austro-Hungary
from 1904. That might give you some clues. Be prepared to use your "best
guess" for a match, and you might be wrong and have to start over.
Another option - go to _www.rootsweb.com_ (http://www.rootsweb.com) and do
some searching of the mailing lists and see if you can find one for
Austro-Hungary, or just Hungary for starters.
Good luck
