I would like you to consider your inclusion of 'Hanna' in your quest to find
'Joan'. If you are referring to people who were originally from the British
Isles, and still had their ways, then you must consider the name Hannah as
it was/is known to the British. Hannah was always a popular name in the
past in England where I live. Now its popularity is being recycled but it
has always been known as another name for Ann.
As I live near the Scottish borders I am ctually quoting from "The Book of
Scottish Names" by Iain Zaczek.
"Joan: Originally a contraction of the Old French Johanne.
Ann, Anne, Annie: Originally a Hebrew name, this is actually a diminutive
of Hannah ('favoured by God') "
Ian Clough, (from a family with no wanderlust tendencies researching
Clough's of Northumberland, England.)

Dear Cousins,
The following individuals named Joan, Joane, Hanna, Joanna, and Jane
immigrated to New England between 1631 - 1638 (source: "Founders of New England," The
New England Historical and Genealogical Record, Oct 1860, p. 300-342 (online
at http://www.newenglandancestors.org/). Could one of these be our
Jone/Joannah/ Jane? Anyone know anything about any of them? Unfortunately, in some
listings of those going to New England, only the males were listed, and I am sure
this is not all the possible individuals there must be:
Aboard the "Christian de Lo":
Jane Morden, age 30 (1634)
Aboard the "Susan & Ellen:"
Joan Broomer, age 13 (1635)
Hanna Hudson, age 14 (1635)
Joanna Pinder/Pynder, age 14 (1635)
Hanna Smith, age 30 (1635)
Jane Coe, age 30 (1635)
Aboard the "Planter:"
Hanna Smith, age 18 (1635)
Jane Giddins, age 20 (married to Geo. Giddins--no children) (1635)
Aboard the "Elizabeth & Anne"
Jane Damand, age 9 (1635)
Hanna Day, age 20 (1635)
Aboard the "Abigail:"
Joane Jorden, age 16, servant to Geo. Hadborne, age 43, a glover, and Anne,
his wife, age 46, from Stepney (1635)
Joan Wall, age 19 (1635)
Aboard the "Increase:"
Hanna Marvin, age 6 mo. (1635)
Jane Andrewes, age 3 (1635)
Jane Rawlin, age 30 (1635)
Aboard the "Desire de Lond":
Hanna Hoeman, age 8 (1635)
Aboard the "Hopewell":
Joan Clevin, age 18 (1635)
Joan Grave, age 30 (1635)
Aboard the "Truelove":
Jane Walston, age 19 (1635)
From a parchment volume labelled on the cover "T G 27.979--AD 1637--13 Car.
I":
Joane Metcalfe, age (?), daughter of Michill Metcalfe of Norwich, Dornix,
to go to Boston (1637)
Hannah Gedney, age (?), daughter of John Gedney of Norwich of Norff to New
England (1637)
Aboard the "Confidence of London":
Joane Porter, age (?), daughter of Roger Porter of Long Sutton in the
County of South- (1638)

Joane Dum, age 19, daughter of Richard Dum of New England (1638)
I left out those women too old to flirt with John.

Linda F.
Dear Cousins,
Anyone looking at the New England Historical and Genealogical Register this
week? It's free online through the Thanksgiving weekend:
http://www.newenglandancestors.org/
Adding to the confusion of the John Clough of Boston, Charlestown, and
Salisbury is the following entry from the First Church in Charlestown,
Massachusetts, page 9:
"1652, 1: mo: day 2; John Clough: Jone Clough: {Admitted"
Source: "Record Book of the First Church in Charlestown, page 9." New
England Historical and Genealogical Register, July 1869, p. 281.
Jane is mentioned as Jone, not Jane, in the Salisbury, MA, vital records, and
as Jone and Joannah in the court records, Essex County Quarterly Court
Records.
Source: Deaths, heading "CLOUGH," "Vital Records of Salisbury,
Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849." Topsfield, MA: The Topsfield Historical
Society, 1915, pages 539-541.
John CLOUGH is mentioned with his wife Jone (not Jane) in the births of his
children under "Salisbury Births" (they are listed in the above book in
alphabetical order):
Elizabeth, d. John and Jone, 16: 10 m: 1642 (p. 49)
Mary, d. John and Jone, 30: 5 m: 1644 (p. 51)
Sarah, d. John and Jone, 28: 4 m: 1646 (p. 52)
John, s. John and Jone, 9: 1 m: 1648 (p. 50)
Thomas, s. John and Jone, 29: 3 m: 1651 (p. 52)
Martha, d. John and Jone, Mar. 17, 1691 (p. 51)
Samuell, s. John and Jone [Joannah. CT. R.], 20: 12 m: 1656 ( p. 51)
I still think we need to look for a Jone or Joannah and not a Jane. I have
the Charlestown, MA, Vital Records book and there is no mention of a marriage
between a John Clough and Jone or any children even though they are in the
church records above. Could John and Jone have joined the church in Charlestown
for some reason after the birth of Thomas? Are there two John and Jones????
There is a John Clough b. to William & Mary Clough in Charlestown in 1657,
and that is definitely not our John. Also, a John Clough of Boston m. Abigail
Edes of Charlestown in 1758, also not our John.
Source: Vital Records of Charlestown, Massachusetts to the Year 1850, Roger
D. Joslyn (Ed). Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1984, pp.
18 & 403.
Anyway, let's search for a Jone, not a Jane!
Your cousin,
Linda F.

I don't have any info on the Hosmer family as Helen (Loree) Hosmer who is a Clough cousin is married into the Hosmer family... I may be of no help there... I haven't come across Elnora Clough yet in my search - chances are that she ties into this family as well - I just haven't done the research. If any thing else has a familiar ring to it I would love to hear from you.

I am looking for information about Mary Clough, daughter of Isaac Clough and Mary Crossman, who was born in Durham, Maine on May 10, 1816. Mary Clough's birth (1199) appears in the Clough book, but there is no additional mention of her.
I suspect she married Charles Jones, b. abt. 1810. The 1850 census gives the name of his wife as Mary C. Any info about Mary Clough would be greatly appreciated.

We have many surnames in common. I am looking for additions to my research in the names of Herbert W. Ellcey and Myrtle A. Hosmer. I also noticed in some of my research that Elnora Clough was listed as a parent to Esther Emma Murray. If this is any connection, please contact me. I thank you in advance for your time.
