Dear Cousins,
If a birth date is written
17: 2 m: 1643
is this to be interpreted as Feb 17, 1643, or does the "2 m" mean a different
month in the 1600s?

Subject: Clough Family Bible
Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 17:13:58 -0500
Hello; I'm hoping you can help me. I have a small, old Bible that I believe
I got at a Flea Market, or antique store. On the back inside cover are
names and dates of a few "Clough" family members. I would like to give this
bible or the information to whoever might be interested. I really don't
know where to start, but your name is given as a contact on the Rootsweb
Clough Family Page.
The Bible says "Park Wesleyan Sunday School, Jubilee Year 1864, Sheffield"
on the front cover. I am assuming this is Sheffield, England. Inside there
is a label inscribed "Presented by the Teachers and Patrons of the Park
Wesleyan Sunday Schools to Susannah Reamy, scholar, Admitted March 6th,
1864." I'm guessing this was a little presentation Bible for good
scholarship, etc.
The inside back cover states: Benjamin Henry Clough, Born June 22, 1883,
Albert Earnest Clough, Born Feburary 28th, 1886, Ellen Elizabeth Clough,
Born on the 27th day of July 1891, Died April 28, 1895.
If you think this information or the book itself would be of any interest
to anyone, just let me know.
Thanks!

Dear Cousins,
I underlined a few things here just to point out a few items I found:
According to Volume I of "The Genealogy of Descendants of John Clough of
Salisbury, Massachusetts," p. 35-36:
"Seven years after the death of Jane, when all of his children were married
and living in homes of their own, John Clough married a widow, Martha
Blaisdell Cilley, the daughter of the Taverner, Ralph Blaisdell." (NOTE:
Jane died in 1679, so this would place the year of marriage at 1686). "On
the 16th of March, 1691, John Clough sold real estate to Onessiphrus Page and
Martha signed off her dower rights to this property. A copy of the deed of
sale is preserved in the Probate Court House at Salem, Mass. and reads as
follows:" (NOTE: According to this document, this means that both John 1
and his wife Martha were alive on 16 March 1691).
The document begins:
"Know all men by these presents that I John Clough of Salisbury Sometime of
County of Norfolk now in County of Essex in Colony of Massachusetts in New
England...."
Without recopying the entire document here, it was signed by John 1 Clough by
"his hand & seal," and also by his wife, Martha Clough, thus:
"Set his hand & seal on 16th day of March, 1690/91
Martha (M) Clough
her mark & seal"
Following the mark/signature is this statement:
"This writing was owned & acknowledged by John Clough Sen. to be his
voluntary act & deed his wife Martha also declared her consent thereto &
yielded up her rights of Dowery therein being present as above ye twenty
fifth day of March 1691 before me. Examined Stephen Sewall, Regst. Robert
Pike Aest." So apparently, John 1 and Martha were also both still alive on
25 March 1691.
This could NOT have been signed by John 1 Clough's daughter, Martha, as she
was already married to Cornelius Page in 1674. It clearly states that John 1
Clough and his wife, Martha Clough, signed the document. This means that
Martha (nee Blaisdell) (Cilley) Clough, John's second wife, did not die in
1681, but sometime after 25 March 1691.
Also, in "John Clough," Vol. I, p. 47, John 2 and Mercy (nee Page) Clough's
daughter, Mercy, is listed as being born 17 March 1690, not 1691. John 2 and
Mercy Clough did not have a daughter named Martha as far as I am aware. The
parents of the Martha Clough I found in the Salisbury birth records are
clearly stated as being "d. John and Martha, March 17, 1691." Source:
Salisbury, Massachusetts vital records. Births, heading "CLOUGH," "Vital
Records of Salisbury, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849."
Topsfield, MA: The Topsfield Historical Society, 1915, page 51. I am not
aware of another "John and Martha Clough" living in Salisbury in 1691.
Perhaps John 1 and Martha Clough did have a child prior to the writing of the
above document; not impossible, to be sure. A daughter, Martha (Clough)
Page, by John 1's first wife Jane, is mentioned in John's will.
Are there any death records for a Martha Clough b. in 1691? Any marriage
records?

Linda

Dear Cousins,
Here's a question for all:
I have an entry for "Clough, Martha, d. of John and Martha, Mar. 17, 1691"
listed in the Salisbury, MA, vital records under Salisbury births, heading
CLOUGH, in the book "Vital Records of Salisbury, Massachusetts, to the End
of the Year 1849." Topsfield, MA: The Topsfield Historical Society, 1915,
page 51.
I can't find a John Clough married to a Martha living in Salisbury old enough
to be this Martha's father other than John 1, at that time married to Martha
(BLAISDELL) CILLEY/SIBLEY--she would have been about 47-51 years old at the
time, not totally impossible to be a new mom. John 2 died 26 July 1691, so
he was old but alive and kicking and could have fathered this child at the
time.
John 2 was married to Mercy Page, so he couldn't be the dad. The younger
Johns were all too young to be the father and not married to a Martha.
So who is this Martha born in Salisbury in 1691?
Your secret cousin,
Linda
