Hi,
That's reallly interesting, but the Cassim family are originally the Cassimatis family from Kythera in Greece. They came out to Australia in the early to mid 2oth century. The surname was shortened in the 1960s. I have never ever heard of any other Cassim name except for ours. I only know of Cassin which is what many people think that my surname is.
Sorry I couldn't help, but good luck!

Dear Cousins,
I was just received some cemetery information today from a 'distant' cousin
in Mt. Vernon, ME, I met while in New England last summer after the Clough
Reunion. She is a descendant of Hannah Clough b. 31 Aug 1718 Salisbury, MA,
m. Nathaniel Whittier b. 1711 Salisbury, MA, d. 1784 Winthrop, ME. Thought I
would share this with you. Most of these are my Cloughs and a few of their
descendants, but you never know when you might be related.
First a little history: Chase Clough, 1781-1868 (my gggg grandfather), son
of Simon Clough and Mary Avery, being named after his grandmother, Patience
Chase, at some time left his birthplace of Gilmanton, NH (we visited there
also), and moved to Mt. Vernon in Kennebec County, Maine, where several of
his cousins had preceded him. He married, lived, had his children, died and
was buried in Mt. Vernon. Many other Cloughs are also buried in the area
there, and some Clough families still reside in Mt. Vernon (met two).
The small town of Mt. Vernon was named after the home of Pres. George
Washington. Settlers from New Hampshire began coming to the area about 1774.
The town was initially named Washington Plantation, but in 1792 it was
incorporated as Mt. Vernon with a document I did get to see, signed by John
Hancock himself! The town is located 20 miles from Waterville and Farmington,
and 20 miles northwest of Augusta, the capital of Maine. It is very rural,
very New England, and has many small lakes and lots of old cemeteries.
Taylor Yard (cemetery) is located on the right side of Route 41 going from
Mt. Vernon, ME, towards Readfield, ME, in west Mt. Vernon, ME. It is a short
distance beyond a tall chimney which was once a part of a tannery which
burned in 1912. Unfortunately I did not get to visit this particular
cemetery when I was there, because I was unable to obtain records and we
didn't know at the time where in the world Chase Clough was buried (my
husband was probably most thankful for not getting drug off to yet another
New England graveyard). I do not know how readable the stones in this
cemetery are at present.
A few Cloughs buried in Taylor Yard are:
Chase Clough d. 23 Dec 1868 (84 y) and his wife Lydia (Taylor) Clough d. 17
Dec 1835 (52 y)
Their children:
Betsey Clough d. 7 Nov 1871 (67 y) and her husband Capt. Samuel Taylor b. 6
Feb 1800; d. 24 Dec 1874 (74 y)
Moses T. Clough d. 28 Aug 1888 (63 y 6 m) and his wife Eliza Unknown d. 19
Apr 1889 (62 y 1 m)
Children of Capt. Samuel Taylor and Betsey Clough:
Mary G. Taylor d. 2 May 1820 (13 m)
Lydia A. Taylor d. 22 May 1870 (31 y) wife of Albert Richardson
Children of Moses T. Clough and Eliza Unknown:
Charity Levella Clough d. 18 Oct 1873 (21 y) and her husband E. M. Billington
Willie W. Clough 1859 - 1907
LaForest C. Clough d. 29 Nov 1858 (1 y 11 m 10 d)
And I don't know who these Cloughs are:
Samuel Clough d. 1 Aug 1907 (age 98 y 3 m) and his wife Alice J. Unknown d. 4
July 1872 (55 y)
Charles E. Clough d. 20 July 1863 (23 y)--GAR marker--Vol. in 3rd ME Regt.

If you know of any corrections or additions to any of this information I
would welcome it!

Linda

I am trying to trace the background of a John Cassim, who was transported from Mauritius to Australia, for theft, in the late 1830`s.
Noticed your surname while searching this site and wondered if you have any information relating to the Cassim family, especially in Mauritius.
Look forward to hearing from you.
This could be James Clough, born June 26, 1801 in Lyman Twp., Grafton Co.,
NH who is the son of Bailey and Susannah Clough. James married to Abigail

So far I don't have any Clough being born in Lisbon, but I do have Asa and Daniel Parker. Asa married Lucy Noble, had daughter, Catherine Parker who married Edward Clough in Whitefield, Coos county.Daniel Parker married Hannah Eastman. Anyway there seems to be a lot of traveling around with this group and went to several closeby towns. Maybe your family did too, like Dalton, Whitefield, Littleton. Try looking there.

Ian,
I have a William CLOUGH b 1823 England d 1899 OH, USA m 1847 Parish Church Of Branspeth Co Durham England
Rachel COLLING b 1829 England chr 1830 Auckland Saint Andrew, Durham, England d 1914 OH, USA.
William, Rachel and their first child, Thomas, emigrated 1847. William's father was Thomas CLOUGH.
The transcripts of the 1841 census that I have seen is so poor that I can't find Thomas Clough's family. Thomas was a pitman probably from the Crook Billy Row area.
I don't know if you have researched any CLOUGHs from that area or even the 1841 census. Perhaps there are some copies that are more readable than the one I used.
Anyway, I thought I'd let you know there are some CLOUGH researchers who's ties to Northumberland/County Durham are more recent. (If you can call 150 years ago more recent.)

I have had a request for information about descendants of Franklin Clough,
born 1810, the son of Isaac Clough and Mary Crossman Clough of
Brunswick/Durham, Maine, and my G Grandfather's younger brother.
I believe Franklin worked in the shoe business, possibly in Lynn, Mass., as
did a number of Maine Cloughs, many of whom (like Franklin and his family)
were Quakers.
If I recall, Franklin is buried in the Quaker cemetery across from the
Quaker meeting house in Durham. If anyone has any information about
Franklin's descendants, please let me know.
Thanks, Clark Whelton

Franklin Clough was the younger brother of my great-grandfather, David Clough.
He is a direct descendant of John Clough who came from England to Salisbury, Mass. in 1635. This link has been proven by DNA testing on a descendant of David Clough, so it would apply to his brother, as well. I believe Franklin is buried in the Quaker cemetery in the woods across from the Quaker Meeting House in Durham, Maine, near Brunswick.
I have been there and, if I remember correctly, saw a gravestone for Franklin.
A number of the Cloughs, including my G Grandfather David, Grandfather Edgar and G Uncle Edwin Clough, worked in the shoe business. I think Franklin worked in Lynn, Mass. in the shoe business but am not sure.
The information below came from Leigh W., one of our Clough cousins and a dedicated genealogist.
