Esther Clough was the name of one of my great-grandfather's older sisters. She was the oldest daughter of Isaac Clough and Mary Crossman Clough, who are descended from John Clough of Salisbury, MA, via Samuel Clough.
Isaac married Mary CROSSMAN, daughter of David CROSSMAN & Sarah BOUNDS. Born in May, 1777 in Pownalboro, York Cty, Me. Mary died on 24 Oct 1857; she was 80.
Isaac and Mary C. Clough's farm was along the Androscoggin River between Brunswick and Durham, Maine.
They had the following children:
1. Josiah R. CLOUGH, Born on 8 Oct 1797.

3. Sophiah CLOUGH, Born on 8 Jul 1802.
4. Fanny CLOUGH, . Born on 9 Nov 1804.
5. Lucinda CLOUGH,. Born on 1 May 1806.
Lucinda died on 4 May 1880; she was 74.
6. Mariam CLOUGH, Born on 23 Aug 1807.
Mariam died on 24 May 1808.
7. David CLOUGH, (my great-grandfather)
Born on 19 Sep 1809.
8. Franklin CLOUGH, Born on 29 Nov 1810.
9. Josiah CLOUGH, Born on 24 Nov 1812.
10. Isaac CLOUGH, Jr., Born on 9 May 1814
11. Mary CLOUGH (1816-)
12. Maria CLOUGH (1820-1821)
13. Maria W. CLOUGH (1822-)
"Isaac resided in Durham and Brunswick,
Me., three and one half miles north of Brunswick on the river road. He was a farmer and gave land to five of his children who settled around him.
Franklin and Isaac jr., received money for their portion of his estate. His youngest child , Maria W. inherited his farm."
My grandfather, Edgar C. Clough, and his twin brother, Edwin E. Clough, were born on September 25, 1856. Their father was David C. Clough, the 8th child of Isaac and Mary, and Avis Keene Jones of China, Maine. They were Quakers. Avis died on Sept. 4, 1866. I have been told that the twins went to live with a family named Gray. I am wondering if the family might have been that of Andrew Gray, husband of Esther Clough, mentioned in the message I'm replying to.

Access to Massachusetts Public Records Threatened - You Can Help!
A bill was recently introduced into the Massachusetts House of
Representatives that, if passed, would close public access to marriage and
death records since 1950, as well as birth records after 1910, including
indices. The Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) board is mounting a
campaign to defeat passage of this bill (H5158) and we urge all NEHGS members
to write to their state representative as soon as possible! Visit the MGC
website to find out how you can help defeat the passage of this bill.

MASSACHUSETTS HOUSE BILL H5158 - PUBLIC RECORDS CLOSING ALERT!
Thursday July 18, The Daily News Tribune, Waltham MA reports with quotes from
Deputy DPH Commissioner Marianne Fleckner, executive director of the
Massachusetts Newspaper Publishers Association Bill Plante, Secretary of
State William Galvin spokesman Brian McNiff and the New England Historic
Genealogical Society genealogist Marie Daly at
http://www.dailynewstribune.com/news/local_regional/birthrecords07182002.htm
This article is very brief and does NOT mention some very pertinent details.
The MA House H5158 bill does not phase out recent phase birth, marriage and
death records out for "privacy periods"! It permanently removes them from the
Public Records. While other state laws are cited in the aggregate to follow
Federal guidelines, there is no attempt to provide qualitative and
quantitative comparisons - which differ signifigantly.
The MA House bill H5158 http://www.state.ma.us/legis/history/h05158.htm is
still not online as of July 18 - you must see this bill for yourself. Ask
your MA House representative http://www.state.ma.us/legis/repdis01.htm for a
copy!
If you are not a MA resident, check with the MA House Rules Committee for
H5158 text copies http://www.state.ma.us/legis/comm/h33.htm and compare with
your own state legislation!
The Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) board held an emergency meeting
Friday July 12, 2002 in Waltham MA to review the text of an alarming, and
recently introduced, Massachusetts House of Representatives bill H5158 (see
links below for issues, status and contact information).
The most pressing aspect of H5158, on preliminary review, is that it would
close marriage and death records since 1950, as well as birth records after
1910, to public access - including their indices!
MGC is recommending that all Massachusetts residents contact their
Representative and that all non-resident Massachusetts researchers contact a
Massachusetts resident to represent their interests - immediately as the
formal sessions close on July 31st but impromptu sessions have sometimes been
used to pass such legislation!
See http://www.state.ma.us/legis/repdis01.htm for districts
The general content of the legislative protest letters should at least cover
the following points, be sincere, personalized and not appear to be a form
letter format:
Dear (Representative Name):
The Birth, Marriage and Death records (Vital Records) of the Commonwealth
have always been open to the public with few specific exceptions. House Bill
5158, currently reported out to the Committee on House Rules, would close
Birth Records after 1910 and Marriage and Death Records since 1950 to public
access.
We ask that you encourage further study of this Bill by the Committee on
House Rules and that you vote AGAINST this bill should it come to floor vote.
H5158 would affect every citizen of the Commonwealth. Among other things it
would:
1) block access to recent death records so that family medical histories
could not be ascertained;
2) increase expenses for persons needing to prove legitimate access to the
Vital Records;
3) not affect the risks of identity fraud or theft which does not occur from
personal inspection of the Vital Records.
Again I/we urge you to defeat H5158.
Sincerely,
Name
Address
Contact Info
Additional notes on the preliminary MGC review of this bill:
The Massachusetts bill H5158 is purportedly a rewrite of H132 See
http://www.state.ma.us/legis/bills/house/h00132.htm .
However, the full text of H5158 is not yet online and the MGC expects that
further line by line examination of the H5158 printed text (36 pages) will
uncover other issues of concern.
In contrast, the MGC has been working on the Senate bill S2302 which may be
reviewed at http://www.state.ma.us/legis/bills/st02302.htm
All recent medical studies point to the statistical and anecdotal importance
of medical information for multiple generations - and beyond immediate lineal
or lateral descent lines.
The H5158 bill could also remove access to the actual primary source record.
It contains such items as "... Such examination, at the descretion of the
Custodian, may be from an automated database. ..."
The Birth, Marriage and Death records (Vital Records) of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts have always been open to the public with few specific
exceptions. See http://www.state.ma.us/legis/laws/mgl/gl-66-toc.htm .
However, House Bill 5158, currently reported out to the Committee on House
Rules, would close Birth Records after 1910 and Marriage and Death Records
since 1950 to public access - as of January 1, 2004 when the inquirer must be
proven to be ONLY the individual in question or the " spouse, children,
parent as named on birth record, legal guardian, sibling, grandparent,
grandchild, executor, authorized legal representative or authorized
genealogist designated by one of the aforementioned persons in writing".
Additionally, removing the indices from the public access will preclude
researchers from even being able to narrow down the likely candidates for
detailed record inspection - increasing the Catch-22 of having to prove a 2
generation or less direct lineal connection to the records in question - when
that is the question!
The H5158 bill does not provide funds for the expenditures of government
agencies that would have to shoulder the new custodian and adminisitrative
responsiblities for records archiving and access validation and/or refusal -
such that even what the Custodian considers legitimate access request may not
be administered in a timely fashion if the determination of legitimate access
is not a funded administration expense.
Identity fraud or theft issue is a claimed goal H5158 bill without regard to
the actual identity fraud methods used and documented by numerous
investigations - either in the old fashioned "complete fabrication", "trash
scouring" and wallet/home robbery, newspaper obituary targeting and
institutional insider records misuse - or the advent of the Internet and
other electronic transaction interceptions. Identity fraud thieves are not
prone to the methodical, time consuming and formal task of searching and
requesting the Vital Records.
You may monitor the status of this bill and check for the full text release at
http://www.state.ma.us/legis/history/h05158.htm

I am a descendant for Elizabeth Susan Clough, daughter of Levi Clough (1773- ) and Sarah Merrell. Do you have your information on the internet. I would like to see if we have a link. I believe Levi Clough is the son of Amos Clough, but do not know for sure if this is the same Amos Clough as there are several listed.
Hello list,
Searching for information on my CLOUGH ancestors. I have Abner P. Clough
as born in Merstrom,Madison,NY on March 21, 1806. His father is Benjamin
Johnson CLOUGH b. March 20, 1785 in Belchertown, Hampshire, MA. I have
been unable to locate any information concerning Merstrom, NY; nor am I
convinced it ever existed. Has anyone heard of this township said to exist
in 1806? Any information is appreciated.
Thank You

G'day List,
I'm on the trail again. I had a Great Uncle William (Bill ) CLOUGH who on
the way home from the 1stWW stop off in NY and meet up with his American
Cousins. There was a photo of Bill at there house in the Bronx with to of
his cousins. The date is about 1918
One name doing the traps is Joe CLOUGH. Now if there is any one out there
with relations in NY who in the distance dark past even mentioned about
relations who stopped off after the war on there way home to New Zealand
please get in touch.
The photo has gone missing now. Bills son Mervyn who is in his 70's
remembers the photo and the story but thats all.
So all you CLOUGH's or relation to CLOUGH's in NY or that area who where
there from 1918 on look deep into your trees, I feel I'm kicking a dead
horse but you never know.
I have never made any progress but you never know. So dig out your records
folks and lets get connected
