Will be making a major change in the direction of the search for my CLOUGH lineage.
I've been in search of Johnson CLOUGH b. 1750-1780 who is said to be the father of Orson CLOUGH b. 1823 in MA. Orson is my gggrandfather m. 1851 Julia MARSH of VT in Buffalo,Erie,NY.
There are at least 3 DAR documents naming Johnson as husband to Lydia AMSDELL b. 1777-1787 in Pelham, MA to Abner AMSDELL and Susan SIRKIN.
Two more articles in the Boston Transcript state Orson and Abner Poe CLOUGH are brothers and names their father as Johnson CLOUGH. There is a twenty year age difference between Orson and Abner. They are buried together in Pine Grove, Amador, CA.
However, there is no Johnson CLOUGH anywhere on soundex, census or other research materials. There is no indication that he existed under that name.
Orson CLOUGH and his future wife (Julia MARSH) are found in the 1850 Hamburg, Erie, NY census along with Benjamin CLOUGH and his wife, Lydia. Also residing in the household is Abner AMSDELL.
Recently discovered that Abner is also listed with one Benjamin J. CLAPP and family on the 1840 Census of Pensioners Revolutionary or Military Services.
So, it now appears that I should be searching for Benjamin Johnson CLOUGH.
The Boston Transcript article goes on further to state that Orson and Abner are cousins to the following line:
Horace CLOUGH
b. 1791 Halifax, Windham, VT
d. 1864 Brant, Erie, NY
m. Parthenia BALDWIN
and their children:
Barclay DeTully CLOUGH
b. 1822 Chautaugua, NY
Lucy CLOUGH
b. 1823 Laona, Chautaugua, NY
Luther (2) CLOUGH
b. 1825 Laona, Chautaugua, NY
Marietta CLOUGH
b. 1826 in Laona, Chautaugua, NY
Helen CLOUGH
b. 1829 Laona, Chautaugua, NY
d. before 1875
Casper CLOUGH
b. 1833 Laona, Chautaugua, NY
d. before 1875
Barclay DeTulley CLOUGH, son of Horace and Parthenia, also migrated to CA in 1850 to Amador Co., CA neighbor Tuolumne Co., CA In 1862 he moved on to Alameda Co., CA where he resided until at least 1883. However, he can't be found on the California Death Index.
Horace (1) CLOUGH married again to Polly CROUCH and had children Horace P. and Mellin H. CLOUGH of whom I have no more information. I do not know if he was married to Polly or Parthenia first.
Horace (1) CLOUGH is the son of Luther (1) CLOUGH and Roxanna WILSON. I have no other information on their birth or death. Horace had the following siblings:
Nathanial b. 1787
Levy b. 1789
Orvis b. 1792
Iola b. 1793
If this is true; then the VT and MA lineages are related and their children were native NY'ers.
Would greatly appreciate all comments.
Other surnames in this family are BALCOM,GRENNEL,HAINES,ISHAM and STRONG
Does anyone know anything about Warren Clough who was convicted of murdering
his brother in Seward County Nebraska in 1877?

Hi
It has been a while since I joined and I have been watching and reading :0)

County, PA census reads, Cluch family?? I have family traced family to
Philly, PA, Shippensburg and surrounding areas in PA, as well as Ohio, and
rownwood, Texas.
I have John Eli Clough and Thomas Hastings Clough b 1822 and 1828
respectively, near Shippensburg, Franklin County, PA. I have their Dad as
John Clough, b? d? Mother may have been Frances Clough born 1802??? Other
possible siblings to JohnE li and Thomas were Hugh Wilson Clough/Clugh and
George.
Anything look familiar to anyone out there??? Anybody missing any family??
:0) I might have them... :0)
Thanks!

Hi,
I am also researching the CLOUGH family from that area. I do not have your
George or Jerry E. CLOUGH in my database though. I will sift through other
info and see if I can find any links. I am answering this on the CLOUGH list
hoping other Coshocton/Muskingum/Tuscawarus county OHIO researchers will
weigh in on this.

Thank You all for your response about my question on the trip to England. I
am not one of the members who is going, however, I did have a specific reason
for asking. I am ready to print out this quarter's bulletin and wanted to
add something about it. I do know that airports are closed, and no planes
are running, guess I should have worded my email more clearly. So sorry if
my question seemed uncalled for. jackie

Hi Cousins!
I know the name below is not of the Clough branch, but I thought I would
share the info anyway as it may help some of you who were in the same boat as
I was until this past week!
For the past several years I have been looking for my maternal great
grandfather Jacob Chamberlain. Recently that 'brick wall' has come tumbling
down!
One of the problems I had was that my Jacob died in Portsmouth VA during the
Civil War. I knew this to be fact as I have a letter from the State of NH,
The Adj. Gen. Office that states when he enlisted, what company he was in,
and when he was wounded, date he died and where. It also states when he was
born, where he was born, his age, and residence at the time of enlistment.
But the problem I had was trying to find out where he was buried.
Last year I put a request into a site called Headstone Hunters.com. then to
my surprise two days ago I got an email from a gentleman who is going to
school in VA. He stated he has been looking for my elusive ancestor since my
request a year ago! And just by pure chance he happened to be in the Hampton
National Cemetery looking for someone else's stone and ran across my Jacob!
He is sending me a map of the cemetery, a picture of the grave, where the
grave is located. He also sent me the address and phone number of the
Cemetery for me to call. I recommend this site to all who are having a
similar problem. Thats headstonehunters.com. Oh I offered to pay this man
for his time and trouble and he said there was no charge, and that most often
people who are signed up at this site will not charge for any info they find.
He also told me a couple of things you can do in a case like mine is to call
the Archive Librarian in that state, in my case the Norfolk VA one, and they
will help if possible. They told him that the Fed. Gov. exhumed all the
Union soldier's bodies in 1870 and established the Hampton National Cemetery.
Then to my surprise the same day I got my first email from this gentleman, I
got another email from a distant cousin, who by the way, found my query on
rootsweb.com about another surname. This cousin has all the info on Jacob as
well! I was able to help him because I have more info on that surname he is
searching than he does. So we both make out in the end!!
So it has been quite a year for me in my search. Because I have also broken
down another brick wall on another surname earlier this year! (which I have
been working on for over 6 years!) And my Thanks goes out to Eva Clough for
that help!

Hi,
This article was in the Billerica Minuteman, Sep 6, 2001. I thought I
would pass it along, but since I don't have any other information,
please don't send me your questions :-)

Billerica cemeteries
There are seven established cemeteries in town. For many years the
Billerica Public Library has housed the catalogs of the Old South
Burying Ground, the Old Comer Burying Ground and the North Cemetery
(excluding the most recent buri-als there). We are now very pleased to
announce that we also have the catalogs and epitaphs for the Job Hill
Cemetery, the Smallpox Cemetery and the Roger's Family Plot. The
Billerica Cemetery Commission holds the records for the Fox Hill
Cemetery.
The South Burying Ground was given to the Town of Biller-ica in April
1663 by Ralph Hill; the half-acre lot was the first established cemetery
in town. Ralph Hill died just a few days after this donation and it is
assumed he was the first to be buried here although there is no marker
standing to confirm this. Many of Billerica's most prominent first
settlers are buried here. The South Burying Ground is located at the
junc-tion of Concord Road and French Street.
According to Hazen's History of Billerica, the Old Corner Burying
Ground, located on Pollard Street, just north of the intersection of
Boston Road, Floyd Street and Pollard Street, was "set aside from common
land" in 1707. The earliest marker is that of Jonathan Danforth (son of
Jonathan Danforth, surveyor) who died in 1715, although there were
probably earlier burials than this.
The Rogers Family Plot is located on High Street at the
Billerica/Tewksbury town line. It was estab-lished in 1803. There are no
longer any grave markers in this cemetery, but there is a tombstone that
was erected by Josiah Rogers for his family on October 22, 1803.
The Smallpox Cemetery is one of Billerica's hid-den historical wonders.
There aren't any individ-ual headstones, just a lovely marker hidden and
forgotten in the trees along the railroad tracks. This marker was
erected in memory of and to des-ignate the place where six individuals
were buried who died of the smallpox in August of 1811. The marker is
south of the High Street Bridge on the south side of the tracks at the
bend. It is about 100 yards into the trees and up a hill.
The North Cemetery was established in 1816, although, like many of the
other cemeteries in town, there were probably burials earlier than the
established date. The cemetery is on Salem Road just east of Pollard
Street and adjacent to the rail-road tracks. There are some very
beautiful and interesting stones located here.
The Hill Cemetery (more commonly known as the Job Hill Cemetery) at the
comer of Nashua Road (Rte 4) and Dudley Road was established in 1828.
This is the burial site of Job Hill, many of his family members, and
some of the workers and neighbors, of the Hill Machine Shop, which was
established by Jonathan Hill, Esq., (son of Job) around 1830. The Hill
Machine Shop manufactured the leather splitting machine that had been
invented by another Billerica citizen, Samuel Parker.
The Fox Hill Cemetery, located on Andover Road, was established in 1856
and is our most cur-rent and most widely used cemetery today. The other
cemeteries do very few burials today, just for family members with
deeded existing plots. Information and records for the Fox Hill Cemetery
and for recent burials in the other cemeteries is available through:
the Cemetery Commission at 978-671-0946.
Information and the catalogs of the cemeteries in town are available in
the Local History Room at the Billerica Public Library. Please visit or
call the Reference Department at 978-671-0949.

Hi Glen -
I've been researching the Clow/Clough's from MD/DE and have been in correspondence with several other researchers who have been researching Joshua Clow of Holmes Co., OH line. I've been told that Malachi was a son of Joshua and have quite a bit of info on his line. If there is proof he is an actual son of Joshua, then I think Joshua came from DE.
