As Alice said, it gets curiouser and curiouser. My Aunt
Katherine just spoke with a surveyer in Bethel Vt. (The
President of the Rochester Historical Society referred her
to him.) He told her he knew exactly where James Madison
Clough's farm was and would be happy to show it to us. The
land isn't that far (about 1/2 mile) from the cemetery
where Caira's parents, (Sayles and Abigail Hoisington) are
buried. Little Hollow Cemetery in Rochester. Also, my
Aunt learned that James Madison Clough gave his land/farm
to his daughter, Emily Louise Martin in 1891, right after
Caira (Hoisington Clough) died. In return, Emily agreed
to care for her father until his death. He died five years
later at age 85. If I were a betting person, I'd wager James
and Caira are buried in the "J. Clough" lot in Southview
cemetery, near Emily and Lyman's lots. I'll be checking
into this more.
My Aunt will post more regarding all of the above when she
returns to her computer on Monday.

I have the following information from "The Surnames of Scotland" by George
F. Black, P.H.D.,
Published by the New York Public Library in 1962:
CLOW
Of local origin from the small place of the name in the parish of Dunning,
Perthshire. Lawrence Clow was witness in Perth, 1547 (Rollok, 28). Andrew
Clow in Pett, parish of Muthill, 1663, and fourteen more of the name from
1610 onward, are recorded in Dunblane Commissariot Record. Andrew Clow,
soldier in Edinburgh, 1674, Laurence Clow in Gillgrastoune (now
Kilgraston), 1687. John Clow, merchant in Crieff, 1717, and three others
of the name are in Dunkeld Commissariot Record. A payment was made to
Agnes Clow in Edinburgh, 1736, and Jenny Clow in Edinburgh bore a son to
Robert Burns the poet. James Claw, burgess of Culross, 1632, may be
another spelling.

hello. me and my fiancee were discussing various origins of last names,
and i realize i didn't have a clue where the name "Clow" comes from. i did
a few web searches, looked at a few surname/geneology/etc databases, and
anything else i could think of, but to no avail. then i happened upon this
board, and figured someone here might be able to help me. is there a web
site or database somewhere that i've missed? is "Clow" a word in another
language that indicates the occupation of the first Clow? is it a city? a
club? my curiosity is starting to overwhelm me. if anyone can help,
please email me or post here. thank you.

Hi Bonnie:
Enjoyed "meeting" your Aunt. I was wrong about 1st cousin
relationship with her,
more like 2nd cousin once removed. Whatever.
Being the thief that I am, just steal info I get on the
internet. Never have been in the
field - so to speak, so have no info where Caira and James Madison Clough
are buried, but will
keep looking.
Did find birthdates for Dana, Pearl, and Earol on Gails

Hello Family,
I don't know if any of you folks have had a chance to visit the Thomas

to. Here is the address http://www.gencircles.com/users/tclough/2
I have just spent some time there and it is a wonderful piece of work.
I don't know if Thomas is a member of this list or not but he should

Hello All
Well got back from my trip to NH & ME safe and sound. While I was there I
managed to go into a couple of cemeteries. I took this picture of one
headstone. I know it isnt the Clough name, but it is a name associated with
the Clough's. So if this is from your line let me know and I will send you
the picture. jackie
