Hi -
I've just subscribed to Clough-L and Clough-D, and plan to join the Society
asap. My husband is apparently a Clough descendant. I've seen very little
information regarding this particular line of the family, so perhaps this
information may be useful to others:
John and Jane Clough> John Clough and Mercy Page> John Clough and Elizabeth
Long> Elisha Clough and Mary Welch> Elizabeth Clough (b. abt. 1720)and James
Buswell (b. 10 Apr 1740)> Abigail Buswell (b. 2 Feb 1765) and 1) Samuel
Silver (b. 2 Aug 1767), 2) Joseph Clough (abt 1748 - 1825). This is where
it gets a little convoluted:
Buswell/Silver line: Arad Silver (1794-1850) and Sophia Emily Nichols
(1792-1865)> William Riley Silver (1820-1894) and Relief Bartlett
(1822-1901).
Buswell/Clough line: Nancy Clough (1797-1879) and Aden Bartlett
(d. 1863)> Relief Bartlett (1822-1901) and William Riley Silver (1820 to
1894).
William and Relief, it appears, are descendants of two different branches of
the Clough family. Their son, George Washington Silver (1843-1928), is my
husband's great-grandfather. Joseph Clough and Abigail Buswell were married
the first of June 1796 in Bow, Merrimack, New Hampshire, and moved to
Bloomfield, Vermont around 1807. The family lived there until some of
William Riley Silver and Relief Bartlett's children wandered away. George
Washington Silver ended up in California. There may be surviving Cloughs
still in the Bloomfield area. Joseph and Abigail's other Clough children
were: Relief, b. 1799 and Hyrum/Hiram, b. 1801. It's possible this was a
second marriage/family for Joseph.
There are several Cloughs buried in the former Bloomfield
Methodist-Episcopal, now city, cemetery. They are: Abbie R. (Clough)
Johnson (1879-1900); A.B & C.W. Clough, buried with Charles B. and Serepta
(Munn) Silver; C. William Clough (1854-1934) and his wife, Annie Corcoran
Clough (1867-1939); Charles V. Clough (d. 1925) and his wife, Martha F. (?)
Clough (d. 1879) and his second wife, Myrtle L. Clough (1869-1937);
Charlotte M. Clough (dates unavailable), Daisy Deane (Clough) Rosebrook,
(1874-1895); Hiram Clough (dates unavailable); "infant" Clough (buried with
Charles and Serepta Silver - see above); Joseph Clough ("d. 1825, age 77");
and Lizzie N. Clough (d. 1868).
I've had difficulty placing Joseph in the Clough family, but based solely on
his supposed year of birth, 1748, I believe he could be a son of Nathan
Clough, b. 8 Apr. 1730, himself son of Nathan Clough and Rachel Brown. I'm
still working on Joseph.
My information is derived from several sources, including the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (compiled by descendants of Harriet Silver
Dunn), "Some Silvers in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont",
compiled by the late Martha Bagley Anderson, Norton R. Bagley and Michael O.
Vacca, Plymouth, N.H., 1994; "Bloomfield News/History" ed. Roger Couture,
published by the Town of Bloomfield Bicentennial Committee, 1978; and
"Settlement and Cemeteries in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom (Indexed
Transcriptions from Gravesites in Canaan, Lemington, Bloomfield, Brunswick
and Maidstone, Vermont, and in Herefore, Quebec)" by Nancy L. Dodge,
published by Higginson Books, Salem, Ma., 1986.
Sincerely,
Andrea C. Edwards

My grandfather, Edgar Clarence Clough, born Sept. 25, 1856
in Brunswick,. Maine, worked as a shoemaker in Brockton,
Mass. in the 1880s. His family were Quakers. There seems
to be a Quaker Clough connection between Maine and the shoe
industry in Mass. Some time between 1890 and 1900, Edgar
changed his last name from Clough to Clark. My cousin,
Dave Clark, found the following information while looking
through the city directory of Brockton, Mass.
Starting in 1890 there is a listing for a shoe manufacturer;
Clough, Micajah P.
M.P.Clough & Co.
Shoe Manufacturers
45 Emerson Ave
Home of M P Clough is listed as Lynn
M.P. Clough's mother comes from Lynn, his father comes from Savanna GA.
Also starting in 1890 there is a Mrs. E.C. Clough, running a rooming house
at 68 Maine St., in 1892 she is listed as Ernestine C Clough, Mrs.--corset
maker and rooming house
In 1896 there is a listing for a Harry Clough, Shoe Laster, at 21 Moreland
Are these names familiar to anyone?
Thanks to all the JCGS members for the lovely surprise and letter that I
received this week. Family research is one of my favorite past times but
it's made even better by the appreciation of the group. Hoping we find
John's English family this year. Thanks again. Love, Rebecca Clough
Harpole
On page 287 of "A History of
Brunswick, Topsham, and Harpswell, Maine" by Wheeler, original publ. date
1878,
is found the following quote:
"It will be seen from the foregoing accounts that Topsham
suffers from rather an unenviable reputation, for so small a town, on
account
of a number of persons it has had of marked homicidal proclivities. Besides
those already mentioned, two other persons from this town, a Mr. Clough and
Henry Richards, have suffered the penalty of the law for murders committed
by
them elsewhere."
Yikes! Anyone know who this "Mr. Clough" was?

Hello All
I am going to start a new column in the JCGS bulletin and its going to be
called "Most Wanted". So if you are looking for info on a certain individual
please email me with your queries and I will put it in the bulletins. I will

Also if any of you that attended the reunion have any pictures you would like

sent them onto me. For the life of me I cant find them. Can you please
resubmit them?
Thanks, jackie

Hello All
Recently I purchased a book on ebay on the 13th Regiment of NH during the
Civil War. In this book it gives the complete rooster of all the men in the
13th regiment. There were several Clough's listed (also some Merrills). It
is great info to have if you are looking for info on an ancestor but dont
know where to start. With what is in here you can then contact the NARA
for papers on this ancestor. Most of the book is life on a daily basis
according to one soldier. And yes it does name names of some of the soldiers
throughout the whole book. This book is over 600 pages.
Below are the names of the Clough's listed along with any other info on the
rooster.
What I am willing to do is look ups for anyone who is searching for other
names of soldiers during the civil war. Please keep it to 2 names each.

Hello Everyone,
>From a VA Clough (Richard Clough & Anne Poindexter>Richard Eggleston &
Rebecca Clough of Powhatan Co VA, my gggg grandparents. Their grandson,
Archibald Bolling Baugh, son of John Baugh and Anne Eggleston, went with wife
Caroline E. WASH/WALSH to Lawrence Co MO in 1838 or so.)
I was trying to find some of my Dade/Lawrence Co collateral lines and was
nosing around the Goodspeed's bio section and ran across this bio of a Fergus
SNODDY, b. Clay Co Ind., His parents were Josiah Snoddy, b. 1801 KY, and
Margaret CLOUGH, b. 1809, VA.
Fergus sounds like an interesting character. They lived very close to some
of my families in Lockwood (FYI, town probably of 100 or so).
I don't know who Margaret Clough is but I'd through it out there for the
archives and any of you interested. Maybe she was in Clay Co IND??
My best,
Janet (Baugh) Hunter
HISTORY OF HICKORY, POLK, CEDAR, DADE AND BARTON COUNTIES, MISSOURI, 1889;
Published by Goodspeed.
Pg. 841
Fergus C. Snoddy, stock-raiser and farmer, of Rock Prairie
Township, was born in Clay County, Ind., in 1847, the son of Josiah and
Margaret (Clough) Snoddy, born in Kentucky, in 1801, and Virginia, in 1809,
respectively. The parents, in an early day, settled in Clay County, Ind.,
where the father died in 1848 or 1849; the mother is still living in Greene
County, Mo. The subject of this sketch, the youngest of seven children,
attended the country schools about nine months, and, when fifteen years of
age, joined Company D, One Hundred and Fifteenth Indiana Volunteer Infantry,
and was for six months in the Army of the Cumberland. After the close of the
war he joined Company G, Eighteenth United States Infantry, and served three
years on the Western frontier, having been with Gen. Carrington’s expedition
against the Sioux Indians, as soldier and teamster, and traveling over
Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and nearly all the rocky Mountain country,
experiencing many hardships. Coming to Dade County in 1869, in 1872 he
married Martha, daughter of William B. and Nancy Landers, a native of Dade
County, where her parents have lived for many years, her father having been
in the Federal Army, and having served as justice of the peace for some
years. They have six children, four sons and two daughters. He has lived on
his farm of 312 acres about nine years. When a young man he learned the
harness trade, which he followed for five years, at Dadeville, just before
removing to the farm. In politics he is a Republican, is a member of Everton
Lodge No. 405, A. F. & A. M., and of Everton Post No. 369, G. A. R. Mrs.
Snoddy is a Cumberland Presbyterian. Mr. Snoddy spares no pains to educate
his children, and is a successful farmer and stock-raiser.
