G'day list,
This is the letter that I received, I thought it might be of interest to
the list and might help someone and I'm hoping me.
Page 1.
In the matter of the CLOUGH's Family's Estates and Inheritance at Baltimore,
State of Maryland or elsewhere in the U.S America.
Bradford Yorkshire England
June 1st 1866.
During the past 8 years an Association under the name " The CLOUGH Family
Association"
( representing the descendants of a Mr Robert CLOUGH, Captain, Ship Owner
and Landed Proprietor who died at Baltimore prior to 1800 and who in his
life time was the vested owner of the above estates and Inheritance) which
association has been in existence and agitation for the purpose of substantiating
the legal rights of the said Decendants and obtaining possession of the
said estates and inheritance.
It appears from the reliable information which the said Association has
been able to obtain, relative to the above named Robert CLOUGH, that he
died possessed of considerable wealth consisting of Landed Property, habitations,
sailing vessels ect, which he devised to his relations in America and England.
A letter came from Baltimore, U.S Americabearing date May 13th 1800 which
the following is a verbatim copy.
Baltimore May 13th 1800
Mr Barnes,
Please to acquaint our brother John Hutton which was at Horsforth Low Hall
that we are all well. Also be pleased to acquaint William WADE, John WADE
and William CLOUGH. All that claim a right and Title to the Estate and
land of Robert CLOUGH and his son John CLOUGH deceased, they must make
forward immediately properly attested to Samuel HUTTON
N.B. You must direct your letters to John GARRAT Esquire of Baltimore County
State of Maryland America.
The above letter was in the possession of a John CLOUGH of Bradford aforesaid
an Inn Keeper and the Eldest son of his family, whose father James CLOUGH
also an Inn Keeper of Bradford aforesaid was the Eldest son of William
CLOUGH the Eldest Brother of the said Robert CLOUGH the testator who died
in America.
Another letter dated " Bradford 7th June 1804" written by William CLOUGH
of Darlington Yorkshire aforesaid a Wool Buyer, ( The eldest brother James
CLOUGH being then dead) address to his sister Mrs Ann HEAP at Halifax in
Yorkshire aforesaid is an additional proof that this is the family of CLOUGH's
who are interested under the will of the said Robert CLOUGH. the above
named James CLOUGH of Bradford and William Clough of Darlington were Nephews
of the said Robert Clough, whose descendants are hereby represented and
who it is supported as being the nearest of Kin, are more especially and
most directly interested under the will of the said Robert CLOUGH.
There are however, in the above association upwards of 250 claimants who
claim to have descended by the male and female branches of the family,
and who of course, would respectively have to substantiate their claims
if at all interested under the Trust of the Will. It is therefore highly
necessary in the first place to obtain a copy of the Will of the said Robert
CLOUGH, who having died in Baltimore it is most probable that his Will
would be filed in the Probate Office at that place, and this is the object
of the present application.
Signed on behalf of the Applicent
Isaac CLOUGH of Shrewsbury Shropshire
England, Wool Buyer.

Hi Owen,
Will you please send me a copy of the letter. "My" John Clough served in the
American Revolutionary War and then moved to Kentucky. We have never been
able to connect him with any other Clough family. I have a relative in
another line who lives near Washington, DC and has provided information to me
about other lines, so I think I can ask him to do research in Maryland.
Are we talking about snail-mail or e-mail. If snail-mail, I'll send you may
address separately.
Thanks,

Owen!!! Could I please have a copy of the letter? I'll gladly reimburse
you for the cost. Send me a message off the list and I might know someone
who could help with the Maryland research. Thanks. Rebecca Clough Harpole
G'day List,
After years of looking, I have now got a lead on a Robert CLOUGH who died
in Baltimore Maryland USA prior to 1800.
He was classed as a Captain and died of considerable wealth, consisting of
Property, house's, sailing ships.
How can I check the probate records in Baltimore for his will.
Has anyone got this bloke on their tree
I'm not use to looking in the States, so any help will be appreciated.
This information came from a letter to relations in the UK, trying to
determine who would benefit from the will.
All the relations had to prove who they were to benefit.
Robert had a son John CLOUGH who was dead according to the letter by 1866
Would it be easier to reprint the letter so all can read it. About 4 A4 pages.
Help please

Hello Family,
I was thinking this morning and I have come to learn that I have
received my holiday gift each and every day of this year. I can't
unwrap it or hold or shake it, this was freely given and I only had to
except it. It is the friendship of the family and friends I have
gathered through this list. There can be no greater gift than that
and I thank each and everyone of you for it. My wife and I would like
to wish you all well not just for the holiday season but also through
the years to come.
Thank You,

I want to take this time to wish each and every one of you a Very Happy
