Sorry, Will, I picked that up on the California Death Index list, the person was
looking for the death, not birth, and I thought it might be of interest to
someone on the Clough List.

Dear Cousins,
Got this message from another list--looking out for our descendants.
"The year 2000 is a Census Year. Most of the census will be taken by mail,
so after you have filled out your census form, why not make a copy of it and
file it with your important papers? Then your family will not have to wait
70 years to learn about you."
May I also ask of you your opinion of of mail-in census in this day and age?
Although it is practical from a financial point of view, does any one know
what the return rate is? After all, there is no direct threat of individual
penalty like there is for not filing taxes. Seems to me that without the
"door to door" census, genealogy in years to come will become a much less
profitable journey.
Your secret cousin,
Linda Freehling

I sent this a week ago and haven't heard a peep. Is there anyone there
who is researching the CLOW version? I would love it if someone would
redirect me if I have strayed into the wrong field.
Thanks,

Hi,
Thankful CLOUGH (Westminster, Worcester, MA VRs show her as "Thankfull
CLOW [Clough]"), who I think was born in Boston, Suffolk, MA, possibly
in 1739, married Asaph RICE in Westminster, Worcester, on 14 February
1771. (She was his second wife.)
Polly (or Mary) RICE, daughter of Thankful Clough and Asaph Rice, was
born in June 1778 and, on 25 August 1801, married Jacob SAWYER in
Westminster, Worcester, MA. Their daughter, Mary Almira SAWYER, born in
Westminster on 13 September 1814, married William Chamberlain JACKSON on
9 September 1835 in Andover, Essex, MA. The JACKSONS were my
gggrandparents.
Thankful Clough/CLOW died in Westminster, Worcester, MA on 16 February
1782. Does anyone know anything about her and her antecedents?
I'll appreciate any help you can give.
Judy Wheeler

He could be. I don't know past David who was b.in Salem MA in 1752. Yes
he did marry Damaris Smith of Marlborough, MA. b.Aug.1, 1851. It says he
moved there from Sudbury,MA. Thank you very much! Do you have any more
on this family? I don't know the book about John Clough, unfortunately.
I have only seen it mentioned on the Clough list but had no idea about
any of this and so it didn't mean anything before.

Ginny: In the process of reviewing the The John Clough book I have
been gathering Vital Records from various towns in Massachusetts.
I have perhaps 30 or so towns, so far. I do not have Marlboro Mass
As you probably know, The Clough book documents the following
15 as children of Joseph and Susanna (Reeves) Clough.
JUDITH April 28, 1732
JONATHAN Feb. 17, 1734
SUSANNA March 10, 1735
Hannah Oct. 2, 1736
ELIZABETH Dec. 8, 1737.
Lydia Jan. 14 1739
SARAH Feb. 1, 1740
NEHEMIAH July 3, 1741
JOSEPH March 22, 1742
BENJAMIN Sept. 28, 1744
Jacob Jan. 3, 1746
Eunice Jan. 9, 1747
John March 1, 1749
DAVID Dec. 19, 1750
JACOB Jan. 24, 1753
The book does not state the source of this information.
The book states that Joseph lived and died in Salisbury. As far as I
can determine the book asserts all children were born in Salisbury.
The Salisbury Vital Records has the following FIVE (only five)
"CLOUGH" entries. So the town clerks in the 1730s-1750s did not
know, or maybe the pages had been destroyed, of the births of TEN
children in their town to the same parents.
Those five Vital Record entries are:
Judith Clough b: Apr 28, 1732 Salem,Esx,Ma ("d. Joseph and Susanna
(Reeves)")
Jonathan Clough b: Feb 17, 1733 Salem,Esx,Ma ("s. Joseph and Susanna
(Reeves)")
Susanna Clough b: Mar 10, 1734 Salem,Esx,Ma ("d. Joseph and Susanna
(Reeves)")
Hannah Clough b: Mar 09, 1736 Salem,Esx,Ma ("d. Joseph and Susanna
(Reeves)")
Lydia Clough b: Jan 14, 1738 Salem,Esx,Ma ("d. Joseph and Susanna
(Reeves)")
Notice that the maiden name of the mother is used, very unusual. I wonder
whether it was because a Joseph and Susanna Clough were
having children AT THE SAME TIME in Gloucester?
A few pages after the CLOUGH births, The Salibury Vital Records have the
follow 15 CLUFF births:
each line says "s Joseph and Susanna" or "d. Joseph and Susanna"
each line also says P. R. 394" This stands for Personal Record #394
Benjamin, Sep 22, 1744
David Dec 19, 1750
Elizabeth Dec 06, 1737
Hannah Oct 02, 1736
Jacob Jan 03, 1746
Jacob,2nd Jan 24, 1753
John Mar 01, 1749
Jonathan Feb 17, 1734
Joseph Mar 22, 1742
Judith Apr. 28, 173-.
Lydia Jan 14, 1739
Nehemiah, , Jul 03, 1741
Sarah, Feb 15, 1740
Susanna Mar 10, 1735
Unice Jan 19, 1747
There are no other CLUFF birth entries. If you look at the above pair
of entries, you will see that each of the CLOUGH births has a
corresponding "CLUFF" birth
However, there are 10 CLUFF births for which there is no correspond-
ing CLOUGH birth.
Furthermore, each of the CLOUGH births specifically identifies the
surname of the mother.
And, finally, each CLUFF entry has appended to it the symbol "P. R. 394"
This is identified in the introduction to be
"family bible in the hands of Milon Cluff"
So, the Salisbury town clerk recorded only 5 contemporary births, but
150-160 years later, Milon Cluff added 10 more names. Mr Cluff did not
identify the bible source in the book to the best of my knowledge.
So Salisbury VR tells us of 5, and Milon Cluff tells us of ten new ones.
May be right, but is not as reliable as Vital Records. The fact that the
spelling is CLUFF as early as the 1730s suggests that Milon Cluff used
that spelling himself or that the spelling in the bible "in his hands"
came later and was therefore not contemporaneous.
And in the next generation The book states that
DAVID (Joseph, Benoni, John, John) born Dec. 19,
1750 at Salem, Mass,
lived in Sudbury, Mass. where he married Damoris Smith. of
Marlborough, Mass.
The book also states that a daughter and twin sons were born EITHER
in Salem OR Sudbury, Mass, so the book must be considered uncertain
even with respect to the existance of these children, without independant
evidence that may be in the hands of the John Clough Society but doesn't
seem to be in the book.
I can say that there is no Clough or Cluff marriage record in Sudbury.
There is no relevant Clough or Cluff birth record in Sudbury. I do not have
the Marlboro records for Clough or Cluff.
There are also no records of a daughter or twin sons to David & Domoris
in Salem,Esx,Ma. On the other hand, the book MAY have intended
Salem New Hampshire. Might be worth lookiing for.
All and all, it looks like you have done a lot of work, and you may have
have developed some good leads; but I would consider it a kind of shaky
foundation on which to build this particular branch of your family tree.
happy hunting
will
I have just rejoined this list so I may have missed something pertinent
to my post. I believe I have found the Clough descendancy of my Eliza
Peabody who was 35 years old on the 1860 census and married Gardner
Davis in Eckford, Sheridan Twshp. Calhoun Co. MI. in 1857. Her parents
were Elder Daniel Peabody, minister of the Christian Church, and Jennet
Peabody nee Patterson. The parentage of Eliza is confirmed on the Peabody
records as she is a descendant of John Peabody of Duxbury. Jennet's
mother was Eunice Clough and her father was Abraham D. Patterson
according to the IGI file.
>From the "History of the Town of Henniker,Merrimac Co. N.H. 1735-1880 by
Leander W. Cogswell, I have the following: from P.506 and 507 Eunice
Clough b. April 21, 1781,given as d/o David Clough and Damaris Smith,
md. Abraham D. Patterson Nov.17, 1803; from p.671 ; "Abraham Patterson
m. Eunice, dau. of David and Demarara Clough,
Nov.17,1803. Jenette, b. Nov., 1804. But little is known of this
family."
On the Familysearch.com site the parents of Jennette Patterson of
Henniker MA.b. 4 Nov. 1804 are also given as Abraham D. Patterson and
the mother as Eunice with no surname given.
If anyone is able to verify this information or add to it I would be
very grateful for your help. Thanks. Ginny R.
Here is something I found today that surprised me alot. I didnt know that
there were census records back in John's day but I did find one! So thought
I would pass it along to you all. I put his name in bold lettering.

Good morning, again, to the CLOUGH list members,
The subject ANNA is another of my "unattached" CLOUGH's, and needs a
husband. I show her as a daughter of CORNELIUS and ANNA (EVANS)
CLOUGH. I have another ANNE CLOUGH who married EDWARD SLEEPER,
September 15, 1746, in Hampton, NH. EDWARD was born October 26, 1719,
in Kingston, NH, so the birth dates match rather well. The question is
whether these are the same individual.
If anyone on the list has any information they are willing to share,
it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Good morning to the CLOUGH list members,
I am trying to find families for some of the "unattached"
individuals in my database. The subject NATHAN married RACHEL (Surname
Unknown) about 1733, and had at least two children. (1) WILLIAM, born
April 19, 1734, died August 21, 1798, and (2) BENJAMIN born November 1,
1737, married MARIBAH RING, June 1759, in Fremont, NH.
If anyone on the list has any information on the parent and siblings
of NATHAN, and any addition children for NATHAN and MARIBAH, it would be
appreciated. Thanks in advance.
