I'd like to refer you to Sheila Andersen, the genealogist for the John
Clough Genealogy Society. The last I knew, Sheila had in her possession
a copy of The Descendant of David and Betsey Clough revised by Viva C.
Whetten a few years back. It contains detailed biographies of David and
his 12 children -- 11 sons and 1 daughter. This might just contain what
you are looking for.
Vol II of The Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, Mass, p. 9 refers
to Rebecca as follows: "1980 -- Moses M "M. Dec 25, 1856 Rebecca
Langman dau. of John and Rebecca (Schooler) Langman, B. at Doddington,
England. D. Oct 1, 1913 at Pima Arizona"
If Sheila can't help you, perhaps Viva Whetten can (P.O. Box 540, Portal,

Descendants of David and Betsey Clough
Hi everyone,
I am new at this geeology thing, and I am really excited about finding this mailing list! I was wondering if anyone had any information on Rebecca Cula Langman Cluff. Specifically on her middle name Cula. What is the history of it? Where did it come from? Rebecca was born on 28 Aug 1835 in Doddington, Dumbershire, England. She is the daughter of John and Rebecca Schooler Langman. She was the first wife to Moses Cluff, son of David and Betsey Hall Cluff.
If anyone has any idea about where I might be able to find information on her middle name that would be helpful too!
Thank you!
Kimberly Cula Theobald
Hello,
I am new to the list, having just recently found the will
for one of my Baugh ancestors which makes all sorts of connections to
Eggleston/Clough/Poindexter/Pettus/Overton.
I was pleased yesterday to see information on descendants of
Richard Clough and Ann POINDEXTER, one of which I am also according to
Eggleston researchers. I descend through their daughter Rebecca who married
Richard Eggleston, probably in Hanover or Louisa Counties VA. They lived in
Powhatan Co. Their daughter Anne Eggleston married John BAUGH abt 1772,
probably in Powhatan. I believe the source for this information is
documentation in Dr. Joseph D. Egglestons collection of papers at the
Virginia Historical Society.
Yesterday, Barbara Clough Hannah wrote that she had posted
the information on those Cloughs by mistake, and there is a separate KY
Clough list. It sounds like that is where I want to be I guess. I would
like to know about this Kentucky Clough list.
In the meantime, I am going to post an abstract of a Will of
Molly Clough, 1779, Powhatan Co, that has me trying to put together the
Clough information I have found on this list and on various websites. I
don't think I've seen it here, but maybe over on your Kentucky Clough list
you have. In the list, Molly (unmarried) has bequests to various nieces
(good for her, no nephews! <grin>) named Barrett, Bickley,Overton, Clough,
and Eggleston.
I would be interested in any feedback from any of you as to
where these folks fit into Richard Clough and Anne Poindexter descendants.
Is Molly Richard Clough's daughter??? I have been researching for a while
and I understand that the term "niece" was used with a little less precision
(ie, these could be grand nieces).
"Will of Molly Clough of Powhatan Co, Page 36,
To niece Mary BARRETT, 10 pounds
Rest to my nieces Elizabeth BICKLEY, Peggy BICKLEY, Sally
BICKLEY and Sally OVERTON, as soon as they marry or are of age.
If Sally OVERTON, dies under age, her share to her brother
George OVERTON.
To my niece Rebecca CLOUGH, daughter of my brother George
CLOUGH, a chest of drawers and clothes.
To my niece Rebecca EGGLESTON, a pair of silver buckles and
a trunk.
Executors: friends Charles BARRET and Richard EGGLESTON
Dated 9 April 1779
Proved 16 Sept. 1779 by Cretcher BAUGH and John BAUGH,
witnesses"
My note: Are Sally Overton and George Overton children of
Ann Booker Clough and John Overton? John Baugh (witness) married before the
will sister Anne of the above named Rebecca Eggleston, whose father is the
Richard Eggleston, executor. Rebecca married Creacher/Cretcher Baugh in
1781. Also Richard Eggleston's father was Joseph Eggleton who married Ann
Pettus, daughter of John Pettus and Ann Overton.
In the list archives I found this deed reference for
Cumberland Co (I assume), with Eggleston and Molly Clough posted on July 30
by "Bernie in Northern VA"
"Deed Book 4 Page 95: August 25,1766, Richard Eggleston of Cumberland Co.,
VA in consideration of 50 pound , sold Richard Ligon of Cumberland Co. two
hundred and eighty-five acres in the County of Cumberland bounded by the
lines of William Randolph;, deceased, Thomas Mann Randolph and Richard
Ligon. Witnesses: Richard Eggleston, Molly Clough, Anne Eggleston . Micajah
Harris. "
Looking forward to hearing from you and getting advice re
lists.

Hi Clough, cousins?
My apologies to each of you. There is a separate list for the KyCloughs. We
have not made a connection to the New England Clough line but I'm a member.
The message that I sent earlier was not meant for the CLOUGH list; it was
meant for the KyClough list.
I apologize for subjecting you to my ramblings.

Hi everyone.
In order to bring everyone up to speed, here's my response to Nan's original
message that was exchanged between Bill, Nan Webber and Becky Harpole back in
April. I've corrected his rank - my original message referred to him as a
General but he was a Colonel.
********************************
Hi Nan,
I think we're related but I can't prove it yet. Several things lead me to
this:
1. Richard Clough - I'm researching Richard Clough Anderson - son of
Elizabeth Clough - daughter of Richard Clough and Ann Poindexter. As you may
know, Col. Anderson was with Gen. Washington at Valley Forge, as was our John
Clough. Col. Anderson was given land near Cincinnati. Across from
Cincinnati is the headwaters of the Licking River and it was one of the main
arteries of travel in northern Kentucky where our John Clough settled, near
Cynthiana. I think that our John Clough was either a nephew or cousin of
Col. Anderson. I'm sure that there is a lot of information on Col. Anderson
in Louisville, KY where he settled. Col. Anderson's son, Charles, was a
governor of Ohio. I'm hoping that I can find some research on their
families. I have several references that I'm working on.
2. Near Cynthiana, KY is a little spot on the map called Poindexter - there
because of a relation to Ann Poindexter or just home-sick for England?
3. "Headrights of Mr. John Buckner" - the Buckner family is prominent around
Paris (down the road from Cynthiana)- might be a connection.
I have a copy of a line drawing of the house at Goldmine, VA., built about
1736 by Robert and Elizabeth (Clough) Anderson. It was wrecked around 1900.
Two stories tall but it appears to be a very simple house - certainly not a
"plantation house" of movie fame.
Question: You noted that Ann Booker Clough - moved to Rockingham, Co, NC -
really North Carolina - not Virginia? Our John Clough is from Rockingham
Co., VA.
********************
Now, with that background, let's go with what I found in Harrisonburg, the
county seat of Rockingham Co., VA.
1. On November 24, 1783, the court "ordered that John Clough be exempted
from paying county and parish levy from a wound in his left hand received in
the Continental Army.
2. On August 23, 1785, John Clough sued Michael Mullen - no reason given in
the summary. It was continued to Sept. 26, 1785; it was continued to March
27, 1786; it ws discontinued in March 1786. That man did love to sue folks,
didn't he?
3. In the 1797 Census, John Cluff is noted as having 200 acres of land with
an assessment of 128 (pounds? dollars?). It further notes that he had "6
horses, mares, colts or mules and 10 cattle". There is also a notation
"cleared of pole tax".
4. That same census noted that he is in Militia Company #2. The
cross-reference that I have gives the names of others in the area.
5. I have a map of Rockingham County that only defines Militia Company #6 &
#7, so I have to do some more research.
6. I have a map that Harry Strickler constructed in 1924, using information
that he gathered from a number of sources. I haven't had time to look for
John's neighbors on that map. I did not locate his 200 acres but this map
deals mostly with thousands of acres.
7. The tax records show an event happening on April 15, 1788 but it's
written by a volunteer and I couldn't understand it. Those records are now in
Augusta Co.
Also, for the record: here is the exact wording of the notation of food to
Frances. Note the one critical word - distressed.
"The Court on considering the distressed Circumstance of Frances Clough & two
Children the Wife of John Clough a soldier in the Army of the States are of
Opinion that she be allowed 3 barls. of Corn at (pound symbol) 40 pr. barl. &
150 of pork at 30/pr lb".
I just spent some vacation with Lee Hash (a relative on my mother's side) and
his wife, Nancy. Lee has offered to help research John Clough for me. Since
he's retired and is a man of some means, I'm going to take him up on his
offer of help. Because of his professional standing while working for RCA
with NASA and because he's a true Southern Gentleman, he has access to the
National Archives that the ordinary citizen does not have. He is an expert
in genealogy research and I am convinced that Lee will find the connection
between our John Clough and Elizabeth Clough Anderson.
By the way, I have some information on John Herdman, the Bondsman on John
Clough marriage records. He's a neighbor, according to the 1787 census.
They were both counted on the same day, so they're true neighbors. When I
find either the area of the tax commissioner or the church, we'll have his
approproximate location. It's a presumption, but they're probably in the
same parish. Remember, for a long time, there was only one Church - The
Anglican Church of England, so it's a matter of finding the right parish.
I'm still researching the church records. A man owning 200 acres of land in
those times would be required to go to church. There have to be church
records - it's just a matter of finding them.
That's my brief summary. I think we have a better understanding of his life.
I have the references, etc. and I'll put it together in a more meaningful
way with book titles, pages, etc. at a later time.

Hi everyone.
Just got back from my yearly week in Salt Lake City.
Before I left, I suggested posting what books we have, and are willing to
do look-ups.
The question is "look-up rules". The rules that I have seen, on other
lists, are simple...don't ask for every Smith. Be sure and tell as much
information, that would be helpful for the person doing the "look-up". Only
request a few names at a time.
I suggest that if there is "alot" about your request, that you send the
person doing the look-up a SASE - (self addressed stamped envelope) so a
hard copy can be sent. --unless their are some of you, that like to
type.:-)
Yes, please make my name and list available.

FIRST GENERATION
1. Daniel M. CLOUGH.
He was married to Anna HUNT.1 Daniel M CLOUGH and Anna HUNT had the
following children:
+2 i. Daniel CLOUGH.
SECOND GENERATION
2. Daniel CLOUGH was born on 11 Oct 1826 in Bath, Grafton, New Hampshire.2
The Illustrated Historical Souvenir of Bethel, Vermont. Complied and
Arranged by Fred Cox. Bethel, Vermont. 1895. p. 79.
After a common school education, he began work with his father, learning
the blacksmith trade. He afterward went to South Troy, Vt., where he
completed his trade in the blacksmith shop of James Houston, remaining there
nearly two years. In 1847, he began work at his trade on the Central Vermont
Railroad, which ws then being built, and his headquarters were at Bethel
village. He afterward opened a shop here, where he remained five years, at
which time he bought the J. Wilson farm on Christian Hill. This he afterward
sold and moved to the village, but bought the property back in 1885, and has
since bought the adjoining farm, making it one of the largest and best in
this vicinity.
In 1862, Mr. Clough was one of the first to enlist from Bethel, and was
member of Company A, Sixteenth Vermont Volunteers, serving nine months under
Captain Henry A. Eaton, returning with the rank of first lieutenant. He
immediately re-enlisted in Company F, Seventeenth Vermont, Volunteers, in
command of Captain Lyman E. Knapp. Here he found plenty of active service,
and was at the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania Court House, and was
wounded at the battles of Poplar Grove in front of Petersburg and at
Spottsylvania. At the former place he was taken prisoner on September 30,
1864, and was exchanged December 24, of the same year. He was laid off on
account of disability, and after being sent from Annapolis to Montpelier, he
was mustered out June 12, 1865. Mr. Clough has always been a democrat and
was chosen selectman in 1889, serving three years. He is a member of White

Dear Friends,
Has anyone else had any problems viewing the census at:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/census
I can get to the page index, and then it says the pages can't be found.
Anyone else have the same problem?
Linda Freehling
I sure do hope that someone can answer this. My interest is the 3rd
Dragoons. I have had numerous
requests posted but no answer. If someone has family informaton on Alexander
Clough, I would be happy
to share what I have from a military point of view.
Upon his death, Rivington's reported his name as McLeod - on Sept 28, 1778.
Any help?

Found this in "From Turncoats, Traitors, and Heroes" by John Bakeless.
Philadelphia: JB Lippincott Co., 1959, p. 226-227. Was during the
Revolutionary War in 1778:
"Espionage on Manhattan and Long Island now became more important for the
Americans than ever. Colonel Elias Dayton's spies had long been operating
in
New York, and and Nathaniel Sackett's network was probably still there,
though no one really knows what became of it. Since, however, more
intelligence was now needed, General Charles Scott about this time began
setting up still another intelligence service, covering Long Island and New
York City with a small group of resident secret agents who never left the
islands, but sent out information through a regular system of secret
couriers. at the same time, Major Alexander Clough, 3rd Continental
Dragoons, had secret agents operating in New Jersy, perhaps under scott's
orders. In August, 1778, the general asked Clough to find 'some intelligent
person' to memorize a list of questions, go into New York without
incriminating papers, and get this badly needed information."
Thought someone might find this interesting. Does anyone know if this
Alexander is related to John 1?

Is Conrad still a member of this list? If so please email me. If not then I
would appreciate anyone who has his email address to let him know I would
like to talk tohim. Thanks and have a great day all!

Thanks to Jerry and everyone who wrote about the former genealogists with
the Clough Society. Does the name Camille Arden of Amarillo, Texas mean
anything to any of you? She had the Clough Books so she was probably one
of us.... or just literary. This is circa 1971.
Also I've tried e-mailing Phil Jordan from Fitchburg, Mass but keep getting
rejects. Phil are you out there? Can you e-mail me? Thanks. Rebecca
Clough Harpole
mom and I don't have any other books but the clough books but I do have
a higgingson catalog listing the books they sell if someone is looking
for a genealogy book to buy. I don't know if that will help any.Judy
Hello All
Just want to Thank Becky Harpoole. I got the picture of me with my "John"
doll in todays mail. And you are right Becky, it is too late for this coming
bulletin. But that is ok as I told Jerry and Carl to wait until the next
bulletin to put it in. They had a very full bulletin this time around.
So if anyone would like me to email them a copy of the pic just let me know.
I will be getting more back shortly and then I will add the pic to my web
site for all to view.
Take Care and enjoy your weekend.
