30 March 99 Yesterday I mentioned Schenectady, New York (although I
spelled it differently then). I had written to the Schenectady County
Historical Society and received the following Clough information:
Massachusetts Officers in the French and Indian Wars 1748-1763
1262 William Clough, Lt. Boston 1761(d) September Col John
Phillips
1261 William Clough, Lt Boston Regt. 1763(d) Capt. John Leverett
Col Joseph Jackson
Also included in the package was an article by Dr. Wilson Clough of
Laramie, Wyoming, formerly of Schenectady who had written a book, "Dutch
Uncles and New England Cousins". Apparently Dr. Clough's name was a
derivative of "Clauw". His book included the names, Clow and Clowe in New
York before and after 1665.
The Snackity area in New Hampshire is in Strafford.
Thanks. Rebecca Clough Harpole
I'm looking for descendents of a Homer W. Clough. He once resided at 29
Pearl Street, Arcade, N.Y. in 1943. He submitted family information on
Emily Clough b.1808 and Joseph Dunbar b. 1807, her husband. This
information is found in the book entitiled Genealogy and Descendents of John
Clough, Vol. 1, page 167. Does anyone know of this person or their family?
Thanks. Diane Mortensen
29 March 99 The following are words with Clough connections. Do any of
them mean anything to you? Previously I gave Schenedaty, New York. This
was an area where New Hampshire soldiers fought during the French/Indian
War. There was an area in New Hampshire called Snackedy,(Snackity) that
was named after the town but with altered spelling. I was hoping some of
the Cloughs from New Hampshire might have stories about the French/Indian
War and especially about the Schenedaty connection.
Another word is Arundel. This one really took a while to decipher. The
earlier name for Kennebunk(port), Maine was Arundel.
I have others that are meaningless to me, but might be immediately
recognizable to other members. What is the Clough connection to the
following:
Stamp Act
Guides
Floods
Waterfalls
Stratford/Strafford
Prototype flags (Revolutionary)
Shipping (pre 1825)
Lee (unknown if family name or other common name)
Loyalists during the Revolutionary War or earlier
Is there another name for Elizabethtown, Ontario, Canada?
Thanks for your help. Rebecca Clough Harpole
CUMBERLAND CO. SPRING HILL CEMETERY @ SHIPPENSBURG, P.A.
These are names listed from this cemetery book. Page 38.
There are both spellings in this community today. And the
graveyard clerk stated that
some families of Clough went to the Clugh spelling. Maybe this
is why somepeople
cant find there family. The Historical Society has no family
files on either. So Im
hoping someone may connect to this community. Ill be waiting.

Ooops, forgot the first part.
Uncle Clair Clugh notes;
Hugh, Minnie and George are buried at Springhill Cemetery in
Shippensburg.
No other proof has been found and their is no listing of Hugh
Wilson Clough
at this cemetery. A letter from the records keeper at Springhill
states other Clough's listed at this Cemetery are:
William D. Clough, Eli Clough, this family later went to the
Clugh spelling.
Mary W. Clugh , April 10, 1896 age 17 years old. She is daughter
of Wilson &
Mary Clugh. (Could this be Minnie)?
Also, Thomas H. Clugh, Dec 28, 1828--July 27,1916 &
Martha A. Clugh, Feb 18, 1834--April 16, 1912.
Frank B. Clugh 1898--1930 & wife Mable Clugh (Bilneo) 1899--1978.
June of1966, Mr Rober Wyrick (the record keeper), suggest that
W.D.Clough and Hugh Wilson Clough may be the same man, although
he is in a unmarked grave next to Mary C. Clugh and is listed as
in Company D's 130th PA Infantry.
Hello listers, I thought I'd post these to the list for everyone
to ponder.
I've seen Williams and Henrys pop up now and then.
These were names recorded from a Great Uncle in our Clugh line.
There were families who changed there names from Clough to Clugh
in this community.
I felt it may help with a clue <g> for someone. And maybe help
me to.
I have a list from there society I will post too, when I find
it.

26 March 99 I thought I'd publish my line since I haven't before:
Rebecca Clough Harpole m. Ed Harpole 1992.
I
William Wallace Clough, Sr m. Katherine Duncan 1947.
I
Arthur McGrady Clough m. Maudie Metcalf circa 1920
I
George Washington Clough m. Sarah McGrady of Georgia circa 1860
i
William Clough m. Mary Polly Swain 1842 Traveled to Alabama from Tyrrell
County, NC in covered wagon with Brickhouses, Swains. The Swains also came
from New England to North Carolina and intermarried with the Cloughs. Mary
Polly's paternal grandfather was named Anderson and lived at Lake Phelps
Farm in Tyrrell County. He owned a shipping line that traveled the eastern
seaboard and the New York waterways. Some of William's descendants moved
on to Texas.
I
William Clough (aka Mystery Man) m. Nancy Brickhouse Davenport 1805 Tyrrell
County, NC. William was born about 1765, was a landowner and surveyor,
never talked about his origins and appeared in Tyrrell County in 1801. He
remained there until approximately 1823 when his three children were
orphaned. We haven't found a trace of him prior to 1801, but in letters
from a third cousin who remembers the William and Mary Polly Clough said
they came from New England. No specific area was mentioned, only that
there were many other Cloughs in the area. The name is sometimes spelled
"Clow".
Rumor: William had originally come from England and that the family was
involved in shipping. This has not yet been proven, but all of the above
has.
Update: Awhile back I contacted a psychometrist who predicted I would find
William's current family in or near the Derbyshire area. Haven't proven
anything yet, but got a letter back from an elderly lady with a deceased
father-in-law named William Clough (what else?). She also provided a
picture of him and there is a resemblence. I'm still trying to find a
connection to this family. I owed the newsletter an article, but there
wasn't much to write.
Word association game: Does any of the following hold any significant
meaning (as related to Cloughs) to the other members?

Hello. I sent out a letter to about 40 Cloughs in Canada, New Hampshire,=
Massachusetts, and Maine in a radius of Hampton, NH. looking for clues on=
my great, great, great grandfather William Clough. I only know the fami=
ly
originated in New England, I don't know what part. I have Swain relativ=
es
that intermarried with the Cloughs and who later moved to North Carolina
from New England. I was hoping to contact Cloughs that were from other
families and/or not active in genealogy who might have some tidbit that
hasn't come to light yet. I've received several responses from members =
of
the John Clough Society (which I belong to) and I really appreciate you
taking the time to answer and invite me to the reunion in August. I do
plan on attending. I'll be the one with the short ancestors list and lot=
s
of questions. Thanks again for your help and your willingness to respon=

Hi Lois,
My line of CLOUGHS was from near your area. My grandmother was a CLOUGH who
lived, among other places in the area, and is bur in Clinton Vermillion Co,
IL. Her father Stephen CLOUGH is bur there also. This family which also has
others in the area, was originally from the Coshocton Co, OH area. Clark Co,
IL and Vermillion Co, IN are right next to each other. My father was born in
Jasonville, IL and I know at one time they lived in Dugger and Nokomis also.
I do not recognize Julius CLOUGH unfortunately. Stephen's father William b
1823 Co Durham, England came over in 1847. I do not know if there were other
CLOUGHS with him at that time. His wife was Rachel COLLING and they were m in
Co Durham before emigrating. I do know there was a Jane Grey from Colchester,
McDonough Co, IL who were related or neighbors of William and Rachel while in
England. Also, a John COLLING, most likely related to Rachel was living in
Ottowa, LaSalle Co, IL at the turn of the century.
Let me know if any of this sounds familiar.

Hi Cousins,
Here is the reply I got from our new Cousin FirePhil:
Getting back to you Jackie. My e-mail address is FirePhil(a)AOL.com. Yes I am
interested in your publication of the Clough family. Perhaps we could
exchange books. Mine is hard bound with 300 some odd pages. I printed this
back in 1995 and selling for $40.00. Or if there is just information on a
certain line you would like that is always for free. I sent a note to Sheila
Anderson and waiting for her reply. This is really great that I am able to
make another connection. Phil Jordan from Fitchburg, Mass.
take care, Jackie
Hello Family,
I was wondering if you would mind if I was to add your name, e-mail
address, and the state you live in to a web page I would like to try
making? This will be the first one I have ever done and I want to show
what my interest are in and our family is part of that. If it is ok
with you, please send me the above information.
Thank You,
