Looking for information on Alexander Clough, late Major,
3rd Continental Dragoons or Baylor's Dragoons. Died
end of September, 1778, buried in Tappan, NY.
Probably - maybe - from New Jersey.
Any help would be appreciated. Doubt if he was married
so would have to come upon him as being a "dead end".
Thank you,
Bill Maurer

Please send any messages returned to you back through the list if it
comes direct. I am very interested in the Stafford County, VA
connection. I have a double linage to James and Mary Clow / Cloe that
settled in this county after moving from MD. My connections are through
son's James and William. For many years I have also been trying to find
more on David that went to Ross Co., OH. James and Mary also had a son
John Cloe that was born 6 Sept. 1761 and recorded iin St. andrews
Parish, St Marys Co., MD.
So Please also send me any information that you find.
John and Francis Price Clough had a son William that was marrite to a
Sarah or Sally Blackburn. Can anyone tell me if the Mary (Blackburn)
(Clow)Cloe, that married Alexander Cloe as a second marriagem, is
related to Sally Blackburn above? Mary had a son Julius b. abt 1849/50
from her first marriage. I would like to know who her first husband
was.
The best to all,
Donald
Dear Clough family;
Someone recently posted that they needed some information about
some Cloughs from Stafford County, Virginia. Our branch comes from
John Clough who moved to Kentucky from Rockingham County, Virginia
after the Revolutionary War. And the e-mail below is from a man
whose ancestors were from Goochland County, VA. There should be
SOME sort of connection here. Will the person or persons with
information on the Stafford County connection please e-mail both
the man below (Bernie) and me to let us know what you have found?
Thanks,

Dear Fellow Clough Listers;
I have, with help from several listers, been doing some research
on the Clough family branch in Kentucky. We are descended from John
Clough (1759?-1807) and his wife Frances Price (1759/61?-1816 from
Rockingham County, Virginia. He fought in the Revolutionary War,
and received a 400-acre land grant around Oddville, Ky. for his
time in the revolutionary army. Several of you have asked about
this project, so I wanted to give you folks an update. So far,
we have not been able to trace John himself further back. Any info
on that is appreciated. Here is what I have so far.
THE KENTUCKY CLOUGHS:
Here is my first page, first attempt. Let me know if any of
this is helpful to you. I got additional information on some of
these people from folks at the Clough Genealogical Society in
New England, and folks on the Clough-L list-serv which I believe
you are on. Most importantly, Catherine, I have no information on
your branch through Earl and Alic Clough. Can you fill in that
information for me? See how you think I did, and use the additional
information on birth, death, and marriage dates I picked up for
your own research. Again thanks for all your help on this. And
let me know how I'm doing. The more recent stuff I can get from
the living, so that's why it is sparse.

Just an update. I'm mending fast. Have been able to work a little on FTM
and enter some material.
It's kind a hard being limited, as I am such an active person.
Doing what the dr said to do...haven't tried to paint the kitchen yet.
Dr. says that the halo will be on for about 3 months, then a month in a
hard collar.
Right hand, index finger just a little numb
Nice hearing from you folks.

Does anyone have any more on these lines? I am a descendent
of Candace (Clough) and Charles Hanover. Apparently, the
families of Clough, Orcutt and Hanover were closely connected
in these generations. I would appreciate any information on the
Hanover line. Ted Harruff, Morgan Hill, CA.
Hello list,
Thought I'd try again this year. Never know who has joined in
the last 6 months. Seeking informaton on Hugh Wilson
Clugh-Clough. Born in Shippensburg, PA
1840. The following is family stories. I havn't been able to
connect Hugh to anyone from his family. I understand both
spelling are still in this town today.
----------------------------story------------------
Hugh Clough (Sr.) was born in Edinburg, Scotland in 1812, had
three sons; Eli, Thomas and Hugh (Jr.). Hugh Jr.'s name was
changed in a snafu associated with (Civil) war department
documents. This was discovered when Hugh's Jr.'s wife, Mary
applied for a pension upon Hugh's death. She applied under the
name Clough, but was told it was to be Clugh (if she wanted a
pension).
Does anyone have info on Eli or Thomas Clough from P.A. ?

Hello All,
It is with much dismay that I have to report to
you that I have fallen
victim to a computer virus, and may have
inadvertantly sent it along
it's way to some of you.
I received an email from someone that I do
business with, and another
email along with it from the same person with an
exe file attached
called Happy99.exe. Since it was from someone I
knew, I saw no reason
to be afraid of it, and downloaded it.
Apparently from that time on
each time I sent out an e mail, it was also sent
along to whoever I
wrote to. Hopefully, most or all of you are not
quite as dumb and
trusting as I am. I got it from an Ebay person,
who had gotten it the
same way and had no more idea than I did about
sending it on.
If you have seen this file, I strongly suggest
you run your virus scan
for it. I have Norton, and I went to the site
and downloaded the file
that will take the virus out of your computer. I
understand that Norton
has some sort of agreement with IBM Virus scan so
they MAY be
compatible, but make sure first.
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/happy99.worm.html
That is the link to the Norton site, where you
can find info on this
"worm". I have effectively cleaned out my own
system, so I'm sure I'm
no longer spreading it. At the end of this page
I will include the info
directly from the site about the nature of the
virus, which really is
called a worm. Even if you haven't seen this
yourself on any e mail
you've received, if anyone ever shares your
computer you should probably
check your system. As I said, you could be
spreading it, like most of us
have, without even knowing it.
Please, please accept my apologies if any of you
got this from me. I
assure you I had no idea that my system had even
been infected and there
is NO WAY I would do this to anyone purposely.
If there is anything I
can do to help anyone with getting rid of it,
please let me know. It was
pretty easy to do once I got started, and for
those of you with computer
sense it should be a breeze. I'm thankful that
it's just something that
was annoying and not something that did any
destruction. I'm sending
this to all the lists I'm on, and it might not be
a bad idea to inform
any others that you are on to beware of it. As I
said, they would
probably get it from someone that they know and
trusted who isn't even
aware they are spreading it.
Thanx for your time.
Jean
Here is the info I got from Norton, which also
has a method of getting
rid of the virus. I still suggest getting the
update from your virus
scan program to detect it for you.
Happy99.Worm
VirusName:
Happy99.Worm
Aliases:
Trojan.Happy99, I-Worm.Happy
Likelihood:
Common
Region Reported:
US, Europe
Keys:
Trojan
Horse, Worm
Description:
This is a worm program, NOT
a virus. This program
has reportedly been
received through email
spamming and USENET
newsgroup posting. The file is
usually named HAPPY99.EXE in
the email or article
attachment.
When being executed, the
program also opens a
window entitled "Happy
New Year 1999 !!" showing a
firework display to
disguise its other actions.
The program copies itself as
SKA.EXE and extracts a
DLL that it carries as
SKA.DLL into WINDOWS\SYSTEM
directory. It also
modifies
WSOCK32.DLL in
WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory and copies
the original
WSOCK32.DLL into
WSOCK32.SKA.
WSOCK32.DLL handles
internet-connectivity in
Windows 95 and 98. The
modification to WSOCK32.DLL
allows the worm routine
to be triggered
when a connect or send
activity is detected. When
such online activity occurs,
the modified code loads the
worm's SKA.DLL. This
SKA.DLL creates a
new email or a new article
with UUENCODED
HAPPY99.EXE inserted into
the email or article. It
then sends this email or
posts this article.
If WSOCK32.DLL is in use
when the worm tries to
modify it (i.e. a user is
online), the worm adds a
registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce=SKA.EXE
The registry entry loads the
worm the next time
Windows start.
Removing the worm manually:
1.delete
WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.EXE
2.delete
WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SKA.DLL
3.replace
WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WSOCK32.DLL with
WINDOWS\SYSTEM\WSOCK32.SKA
4.delete the downloaded
file, usually named
HAPPY99.EXE
Safe Computing:
This worm and other
trojan-horse type programs
demonstrate the need to
practice safe computing. One
should not execute any
executable-file
attachment (i.e. EXE, SHS,
MS Word or MS Excel
file) that comes from an
email or a newsgroup article
from an unknown or a
untrusted source.
Norton AntiVirus users can
protect themselves from
this worm by
downloading the virus
definitions updates released
on Jan 28, 1999 or later
either through LiveUpdate or
from the following
webpage:

Good Morning Cousins,
This is important, so please be sure to read it all.
You all know that we don't normally share "Virus Warnings", as they are
usually hoaxes. This one isn't.
There is an attachment that is being sent around called "Happy99.exe". This
attachment is supposedly one of those files that opens and shows a cute
fireworks display.
What it is doing at the same time is infecting your hard drive with a worm
that gathers your information and then sends it on to a currently unknown
site.
Yesterday I received a message from cousins Gene Ray and Margie Phelps
regarding this potential problem and then this morning I received an e-mail
with the attachment. So I scanned it and it was infected!
You can't receive this message via Rootsweb List messages. You can only
receive it via a private e-mail from a friend or cousin that doesn't realize
what it is. If you receive such a message, you should immediately delete
it, "do not" open it. You should also let the friend or cousin who sent it,
know about it.
For a full explanation and solutions, go to the following websites:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/3652/SKA.HTMhttp://www.datafellows.com/v-descs/ska.htm
If you don't regularly use a virus scan program or want to check to see if
your computer may have been infected, you can use the following sites:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/explorer.html for Internet Explorer
http://housecall.antivirus.com/netscape.html for Netscape
I will ask that you not forward this message to other lists as we do not
want to over burden Rootsweb's servers, but if you are a listowner, you
might want to advise your list. Plus we may each want to advise cousins
that we write privately, who aren't on lists that the problem does exist.
Hopefully we can stop this one before it spreads much further.

Hello list!
I originally sent this message last December, with the full intention of
following up on all queries about it, but.... it was Christmastime, and I got
a bit sidetracked. Since there are new people on the list, I figured it would
be a good time to re-post.
My gg-gramma, Emma Jane (Clough) Newcomb a/k/a "Mimmie", was an amateur
astrolger. I have inherited Mimmie's papers, and it seems she did "forecasts"
for family members. Out of about 100 names in Mimmie's files (dating from
around the turn of the century, up until the 1920s), I found about 16 CLOUGHs:
Henry Harrison CLOUGH b. 21 Jul 1837 @ 5 p.m.
Warren Henry CLOUGH b. in Vermont 14 Feb 1860 @ 9:15 p.m.
Agnes Bowers CLOUGH b. 15 Sep 1894
Walter CLOUGH b. in Lowell, MA 30 Nov 1893 @ 4:30-5 p.m
Wilma CLOUGH b. in Lowell, MA 4 Apr 1912 @ 2:40 p.m.
Lillyan Drew CLOUGH b. in N. Reading, MA 3 Feb 1890 @ 9-10 p.m.
Arthur CLOUGH b. in Lowell, MA @ 11:30 p.m.
Leona CLOUGH b. in Lowell, MA 3 May 1915 @ 8- 10 p.m.
Elmer W. CLOUGH b. Lowell, MA 8 May 1879 @ 2 a.m. d. 7 Nov 1912 @ 8 p.m.
Arthur W. CLOUGH b. in Lowell, MA 25 Apr @ 5-6:15 a.m. married 24 Dec
1910 died 7 Nov 1912
Edith CLOUGH b. 20 Nov 1900 married 16 Apr 1922
Stella Randall CLOUGH b. in Providence, RI 9 Apr 1881 a.m.
Warren b. Calais, ME 5 Aug 1878 @5:45 a.m.
Mary Jane (DUSTIN) CLOUGH b. 10 May 1833 @ 2 p.m. d. 25 Aug 1919 @ 12 noon
Eva CLOUGH b. 6 Jun 1889 @ 6 a.m.
Lyman CLOUGH b. 6 Apr 1850
I was debating whether I should post the other names to this list? Any input
would be great!
Mimmie spent the early part of her life around the Lowell, MA area, and from
around 1900 until her death in 1935, she lived in Wellfleet, MA (on Cape Cod),
so there's a goodish sprinkling of Cape Cod surnames in her files. I'm still
hoping to find a descendant of Warren Henry CLOUGH, who was Mimmie's older
brother. A few of these people listed are Warren''s kids, so I'm keepig my
fingers crossed!
Take Care!

Howdy back!
Our John Clough came from Rockingham Co. Va. His wife Frances Price, lived there
during the Revolution. Afterwards, they moved to Harrison Co., Ky to settle on
the land he was given for service. We have never found his roots.

I've sent out e-mails before wondering if anyone had information on Judith
Clough who first married a Henry Collins and then David Maxfield, without
getting anywhere.
I was thinking perhaps I should ask those descended from her siblings if
they have information regarding her life and or marriages. So, is anyone
on this listserve descened from Joseph and Susanna Clough? And if so, do
you have any documentation regarding the children of this couple.
What I'm looking for are letters, diaries or other data saved by family
members and passed down (or collected in other manners) that shows the
migration patterns of the siblings and families. For some reason Judith
shows up in Vermont.
Does anyone have anything on these Cloughs in Vermont?
Thanks all...

Dear Cousins,
The following is an article from the latest bulletin of 'The National
Genealogical Society Newsletter' entitled 'Surname And Heraldry Products on
the Internet' written by Carol Slack.
If you have been surfing the web lately, you have most likely noticed the
explosion of genealogical activity and resources. So, it probably comes as no
surprise that surname and heraldry products have followed the genealogist to
the Internet. Until I volunteered for the Consumer Protection Committee
earlier this year, I had no idea of the number of companies selling these
products.
Surname Books
Of all the companies that sell these sorts of products Halberts seems to be
the best known by genealogists on or off the web. This is most likely due to
their aggressive direct mail marketing. When I searched for Halberts in the
1998 Archives of the Roots-L Mailing List <searches.rootsweb.com/roots-
l.html> which has 9000 subscribers, I found thirty-four messages about
Halberts ranging from inquiries about the legitimacy and usefulness of their
products to scathing reviews of those very products.
For readers unfamiliar with Halberts, the company, which was started in 1969
and uses an address in Bath, OH, markets surname books through direct mail
promotions. Perhaps you have received one of the mailings for 'The World Book
of (your surname') or the newer, 'Millenium Book of (your surname).' The
books are advertised on the Internet at <www.halberts.com> as containing
"statistical information about surnames, their origins and meanings, early
immigrants with a specific surname, place names, informative chapters about
European emigration to the new world, listings of deceased persons whose
births date back to the 1800s, listings of names and addresses of living
persons with the same surnames, U.S. census information from 1790 through
1910, the Soundex of specific surnames" and more. Halbert's has been under
two cease and desist orders from the Postal Service issued in 1985 and 1998
not to represent their products as pertaining to a particular family. In
1995, as a result of continued NGS efforts, the Postal Service issued yet
another order against Halbert's. In addition, Halbert's was to include a
disclaimer in all advertising for surname related products stating that, "No
direct genealogical connection to your family or ancestry is implied or
intended." In all fairness, the web site does offer the following: "While
Halberts heritage books provide information about surnames, they do not trace
individual lineage or provide family genealogies. Heritage books do, however,
give individuals a starting point for their own research." (For more specific
information about Halbert's and the cease and desist orders by the Postal
Service, an article can be read on the NGS web site at
<www.ngsgenealogy.org/about/content/committees/halberts.html>.)
Thus said, a family historian who doesn't know about Halberts previous track
record could certainly be tempted into ordering a book including the wonderful
things advertised about. However, things are still not what they might seem.
For example, the listing of deceased persons whose births date back to the
late 1800s is taken from the Social Security Death Index. This index is
available on the Internet for no charge on at least two sites:
<www.ancestry.com> and <www.familytreemaker.com>. The listings of names and
addresses of persons with the same surname are similar to phone book listings.
Many purchasers of these books have complained that the listings are neither
current nor complete. This information can be found both on the Internet and
at many libraries at no charge. The point being that much of what is in
Halberts books is readily available at no charge from other sources.
Family Name Histories
Another popular product on the Internet is one page "surname histories" which
are also called "family name histories." They are often sold with coats of
arms and are marketed at many different web sites. The surname histories at
one web site <www.houseofnames.com/books.htm> got the following billing:
"Each History Records: Dates back to the 11th and 12 th Centuries, County of
Origin, Culture of Origin, Variation in Spelling and/or Name Changes, How the
Family Developed within the Country of Origin, Castles, Titles, Knighthoods,
Real Estate, and Manors, Earliest Registered Names, Ancient Family Coat of
Arms, Family Motto or War Cry (if any) and Earliest Immigrants to North and
South America. Family histories are essential in discovering your roots and
family background." Sounds pretty impressive, doesn't it? Unfortunately,
these are not truly histories of a family and will be of little help in
discovering your roots. They are most often the history of a geographical
area where people of that particular surname resided at an early date and
contain only general information about the surname. If you want to see for
yourself, an example of one of these histories for the name Metcalf can be
viewed at <www.teleport.com/~mikenna/sample.html>. Several others for various
surnames generally associated with different geographical areas of Europe can
be viewed at <www.swyrich.com/history.htm>. So, where can you go to learn
more about your surname and make connections with those of the same surname?
You might see if your surname has a mailing list. Good places to check are
the mailing lists sponsored by Roots Web at
<www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/surnames/index.html>. Or you might check to see
if GenForum has a forum (query board) for your surname.
<genforum.familytreemaker.com>. If not, you can initiate one.
The family coat of arms that are sold along with the surname histories can be
found on a wide array of merchandise ranging from framed and unframed prints,
rings, mouse pads, stained glass, mugs, key chains, swords, sweatshirts and
more. A coat of arms does not belong to or represent all persons of a certain
surname. A coat of arms is actually granted to an individual who is the owner
of that coat of arms. They are considered real property and are inherited by
the male members of that particular family. So while coat of arms my be
interesting, be aware that unless you can prove descent in the male line from
the man to whom the coat of arms was first granted, it is not yours. To learn
more about coats of arms, try the heraldry links on Cyndi's list at
<www.CyndisList.com/heraldry.htm>.
Reporting Your Find
So, you're surfing and find something questionable on the web. Where do you
go to report it or check to see if it's really legitimate? One place to check
is the Genealogical Web Site Watchdog at
<www.ancestordetective.com/watchdog.htm>. This excellent web site is owned
and maintained by former NGS Secretary, Elizabeth Kelly Kerstens, CGRS. The
Watchdog Web Site, which includes much more that just surname products,
maintains a list of web sites that contain misleading or inaccurate
genealogical information. In addition, the site refers the reader to more
accurate sources of information and sites to educate yourself about the issues
presented. For example, the site refers the reader to the NGS Consumer
Protection brochure at <www.ngsgenealogy.org>. Ms. Kerstens states that she
realized a need for such a site in early 1998 as she was preparing a talk for
the NGS conference in Denver on genealogical misinformation on the Internet.
A committee of Watchdogs was recruited to assess the web sites nominated by
genealogical web surfers. If you have one to nominate, just e-mail the
Watchdog committee at watchdog(a)ancestordetective.com. The committee includes
Ms. Kerstens, Mary McCampbell Bell, CALS, CGL; Donn Devine, CG, CGI, JD; Bob
Freelinger; Marie Varrelman Melchiori, CGRS, CGL, and Joy Reisinger, CG. All
are members of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG) and assess
each nomination based on codes and standards of the NGS, APG and Board of
Certification for Genealogists.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service will investigate any companies that use the
U.S. mails to misrepresent mass-produced surname books or coats of arms. But
the Service needs to hear from you before it can take action! If you receive
a solicitation that you believe misrepresents the product being offered, you
should write to the Consumer Protection Division, describing the ways in which
you believe the company that contacted you has engaged in false advertising.
If you don't have time to write, simply replace the contents in the envelope,
reseal it, and cross out your name and address. Then, forward it to: U.S.
Postal Inspection Service, Consumer Protection Division, 475 L'Enfant Plaza,
SW, Washington, DC 20260-1100
Dear Cousins,
Hope this note finds all of you well! :-)
This note is in response to Jerry Cluff's e-mail to Jan concerning what is in
all of the genealogical information I received from the previous genealogist.
When I transferred the information from the old boxes to a large trunk I came
across a lot of correspondences, some older bulletins, an unbound version of
one of the volumes of Clough books, and ancestry and descendancy charts sent
into the society. I did not come across copies of vital records.
When I move to a larger place next month I will again do a search through this
older information. However, I remember being told that some, if not all, of
the research records for the two volumes may have been kept in someone else's
possession. I do not know who I heard it from or if it is true but I would
imagine that it would have been a large volume of work. Most of what I seem
to have is information that has been sent to the society since the publication
of the two volumes.
If anyone has any further questions please feel free to contact me. :-)
Sincerely,
Sheila Andersen
