Folks, I spoke too soon - Ancestry.com gave a description as follows:
In 17th Century Massachusetts to hold public office and to vote, a man had
to be declared "free." The confirmation of this title was done by the
general court after the candidate provided evidence he was a respectable
member of a Congregational Church. This database contains the names of
hundreds of men who were declared "freemen" by the state of Massachusetts
during the 1600#s. By 1826, nearly three-fourths of the residents of the six
New England states were descendants of freemen, making this database of
great value to those with ancestors from this area.
I just noticed John Clough Sr. & Jr. of Salisbury listed in Freemen of
Massachusetts according to Ancestry.com. Would someone explain the
significance of these listings?
Thank you,
Emmett
well, at frist thought there was nothing to be passed on from one
generation to another , but after reading Trish's letter,, high blood
preasure, and heart murmers, or out of rythem is a family trait.. I just
asked mom.. we both have high blood preasure and I have out of rytheme
as well as my brother, and his children. so I guess it is a Clough thing
no matter what line. Judy

Hi Linda -
I've been a member of Clough-L for some time now, but as far as I know do not
link into the New England Clough/Clow's. My lines are in the Maryland/Delaware
area back to ca. 1700. But I saw your posting about the Clough eyes and your
question about family diseases. I thought I would let you know that down here in
this Clow/Clough bunch ... Hypertension, Heart Disease! ALL branches! It's
amazing. We've gotten to know quite a few "cousins" from different branches and
the connection is back about 5 or 6 generations, but just about everyone you talk
to is on high blood pressure medication. It would be interesting to know if the
New England Clough's have the same history. Oh, by the way, we do have kind of
deep set, mostly light blue eyes down here too. :)

Trish Surles

G'day List,
Is any one in the USA Clough line, had a relation in the FBI, who
retired about 20 years ago. He wrote a book about his time in the FBI. All I
know that his name was Clough, my brother saw the book on an aircraft in
New Zealand and the photo of the writer looked like our grandfather. any
help would be wonderful.

My Clough line through John & Jane, into New Hampshire, then into Vermont
pronounced the name Clow.
Irene, Our JCGS (New England) uses the "Cluff" pronouncation.
As for Linda's question about the eyes, I have kinda big eyes, not deepset,
blue-gray I'd say from a picture I've seen of Bonnie Dannenburg, she has
what I'd call big eyes (big brown eyes) I think Jackie Gilligan does too.
My Mom mentioned the noses from the Clough pictures.

Now the question ~
I know their is at least 3 pronunciations of CLOUGH; the ones in Virginia use
the one that rhymes with 'glow' - ones from New England use either the one
that rhymes with 'fluff' or 'plow' - does anyone know which pronunciation my
branch uses? My great-grandmother's sisters name was Lovisa Clough Kinney &
relatives have used all 3 pronunciations for her middle name. Any help with
this will be appreciated.
My great-grandmother had large blue eyes & so do I - I resemble her in
several ways including very long slender fingers. The comment about the eyes
is for Linda Freehling our 'secret' cousin - I hope your eyes make you feel
like you really do BELONG to our family & you will always be 'WELCOME' here!
Wishing all of you well as we approach the New

Hello All
I know there is one of us searching the surname of SWEET. Well I saw
something on ebay for sale and it was about the SWEET generations, one of
which was a Wm T Sweet. If you are still looking then go to EBay and do a
search for genealogy. Once there go to page 4 and scroll down. as of
tonight that is the page it is on, but may change tomorrow. The auction ends
either the 30th or the 31st.

Dear Family,
Just received both volumes of the John Clough genealogy books. Looking at
the few Clough photos in them, one similarity stood out to me. It's the
eyes. Clough eyes in both men and women seem to generally be large and
deep-set beneath the brow. So what? you say!
Remember, I was relinquished for adoption. And throughout all my life I have
heard the question, "Where did you get those big brown eyes?" It tore my
heart out to get asked again and again a question for which I had no answer
but desperately wanted to know! But as I study even these few Cloughs, I see
the eyes. They are mine. They are my children's (they also all have large
eyes.) My birth mother has somewhat large blue eyes. But I look most like
my maternal birth grandmother (I have a photo of her thanks to a wonderful
accepting cousin I accidentally ran into on the internet on a genealogy
site). And my grandmother is a Clough, true and blue!
My question is, am I correct in my observation of the Clough eyes? Is this a
feature that runs in the family? I still have little family medical
information for myself or my children. Are there any diseases that run in
the Clough family that anyone knows of? Believe me, it is hard being a nurse
and not having any family medical information. I know only that my
grandmother Clough died of cancer.
Here is my line, with omissions to protect individual privacy:
John 1 Clough + Jane
John 2 Clough + Abigail Moulton
Simon 1 Clough + Patience Chase
Simon 2 Clough + Mary Avery
Chase Clough + Lydia Taylor
Nathaniel Clough + Rebecca W. Greeley
Cyrus Greeley Clough + Mary Ann Gilman
g grandfather Clough + g grandmother
grandmother Clough + grandfather
mother + father

Still the secret "child,"
