Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
If anyone on the list gets a PBS station "Ballykissangel" program, the
producer is a Chris Clough, from England.. the program is produced and
filmed in Ireland. I am looking for address to write to him just for the
fun of it. It is a BBS station.
Any avenues of hunting is fair game.Judy and mom
Hi Family,

Folks, please give me some feedback on the following message.
If it is useful to you, I will try to do some more like this.
This note took several hours to research and compose; so it
is not worth my while if only one or two people find it useful
I hope the following clarifies my earlier message on Eunice Clough
There were a group of Cloughs in Belchertown Ma in the 1780s.
Belchertown is all but adjacent to (North & South) Hadley.
I have xerox copies of a photocopy of the original Belchertown
records of the families of Luther and Benjamin Clough. These
records are on file (on microfiche) at Mass Archives in
Boston.
According to IGI, Luther and Benjamin Clough were siblings
along with many others, perhaps 15 or more. At least most of these
children seem to have been born in Stafford,Tolland, Ct not far
from the Mass border.
http://www.familysearch.org/
Below, I have tabulated an extract of the 1790 & 1800 censuses for
Hampshire County,Mass. Belchertown is and was in Hampshire County.
I suggest that the best candidate below for the father
of Eunice Cloughg is Amasa. Benjamin & Luther each had 4 children in
Belchertown in the 1780s, and Eunice is not among either family.
Furthermore, Ben does not have any girls the right age for the 1800
census, and Luther is not in the 1800 census.
First, some comments on census data.
Federal Censuses have been done every 10 years since 1790.
Public data is available for every Federal Census from 1790-1920
The 1930 census information will be made public in the year 2002.
There are 14(?) National Archives and Records Administration
centers throughout the country. These facilities store Federal
Censuses and lots of other interesting Federal records [e.g.
immigration, and naturalization records]. Revolutionary War records,
including land grants, pension applications, and copies of earlier
inquiries on a specific veteran, War of 1812 records, Civil War
>Records. (About 2 years ago the NARA facility in Waltham Mass
received Maine draft registration records for World War I)
Almost all of these records are on microfilm. The NARA facility
>in Waltham,Ma outside of Boston has upwards of 60 microfilm
readers, two or 3 microfilm printers, a couple of Xerox machines
etc.
For me, the central part of these facilities are their thousands
of reels of Cenus information. Many local libraries -in Mass at
least-have microfilm readers, and modest collections of censuses.
The Mass NARA has recently acquired CDs containing indexes for an
awful lot of the Federal Censuses. You can purchase from Broederbund
a very comprehensive set of Census indexes for $199.00.
This is probably an impractical purchase for the average hobbyist.
However, it might be a wonderful gift to donate to your local library
(perhaps as a shared acquisition by a local research group.)
You can find some info on NARA at
http://www.nara.gov/regional/nrmenu.html
In addition, there are Family History research centers
throughout the country that have access to Census Records on
microfilm [these centers are run by the Mormon Church]
Since 1850 Federal Censuses tabulate the name of every
family member, their age, and what state and country they
were born in.
Using censuses is an absolutely essential part of doing family
research. If you are not prepared to learn how to use them, you
are truly wasting your time doing family research.
There is an explanation of the censuses that comes directly
from the 1790 CD.
Feedback on this is IMPORTANT. (of course, thankyous are always
needed), but even more useful is a sense of whether such kinds
of messages have any utility.
On the other hand, PLEASE do not ask me any questions about this
message. If it isn't self-explanatory, then I cannot spend the
time to help you any more.
EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIMENT and learn.

CLOUGH, Joseph # 243 02001-00001 00
CLOUGH, Timothy # 258 01010-30001 00
===========================================================
Checking the above legend we see that two are living in
Belchertown, one is living in Springfield (243-248) and three
are living ... where, class? (sorry, my teaching background
sneaks in at the oddest time)
Anyway, back to interpreting the numbers.
(males 1st 5 digits)-(females nxt 5 digits)-(free negros/
indians 1 digit)
(Slaves 1 or 2 dig.
the 5 Digit groups breakdown as follows
1st digit - number in household age 10 & under
2nd digit - number in household age 11-15
3rd digit - number in household age 16-20
4th digit - number in household age 21-45
5th digit - number in household age 46+
??Why include the free negro, indian, slave field??
Well, the printed copy of the 1790 census for one of my
ancestors, from Maine, of all places had two slaves in that
field. Sure enough, as the result of research by several
of our family we discovered that this man was a sea-captain
married a girl from Maryland. She had inherited two slaves
from -I think- her grandfather. And as an example of cross
checking, the transcribed info on the 1790 CD HAS ZEROES in
the slave field. Fortunately, we kept a zerox copy of the
printed version of the 1790 CD.
Anyway back to the Cloughs
Amasa CLOUGH breaks down as follows
CLOUGH, Amasa # 204 31111-11211 00
Town number 204 = Belchertown
31111 11211 00
----- ----- --
3 boys 0-10 1 girl 0-10 free negroes
1 boy 11-15 1 girl 11-15 indians or
1 man 16-20 2 women 16-20 slaves
1 man 21-45 1 woman 21-45
1 man 46+ 1 woman 46+
Given the ages of the children, the table SUGGESTs there are
THREE generations of family in this househould
5 males under 21 4 females under 21
a father 21-45 a mother 21-45
a grandfather +46 a grandmother +46
Let's look at Timothy for another example
!!!I leave as a "classroom" :-) exercise to checking the legend
above, for the name of the town!!!
Also, check a map and see how close to Belchertown this town
actually is!!!!
CLOUGH, Timothy 258 01010-30001 00
males females
01010 30001 00
1 boy 11-15 3 girls 0-10
1 man 21-45
no men 46+ 1 woman 46+ no free negroes
indians or
no slaves
This is INTERESTING because it suggests the mother had
died, and that some "grandmother" is living with them.
It could easily have been a transcription error from the
original microfilm or the printed book to the CD, but if
it's accurate, then the mother died young, and -perhaps-
Timothy's mother moved in both to lend a hand and also
possibly, to have a place to stay herself. Perhaps her husband
had ALSO died.
This is clearly a case that merits corroboration with the
original census records at NARA or a Family History center
What next?
Well, let's see what else there is on Timothy in the
on-line IGI records.
The site is http://www.familysearch.org/

has responded to this or not.
Published first in 1952, with a second printing in 1988,
by The JCGS, Inc.
There are clearly many errors in the books (as there are
in most works.) The most disturbing thing I find about
the volumes is that no sources are listed. But, they
are a place to begin. I wouldn't accept the books as
a primary source. I know the Society has been given
corrected information for many errors, but another
disturbing factor is that this corrected data is not
available to anyone but a select few people. And they
may or may not be planning to publish a new genealogy...
I believe Gail is attempting to post corrections to the
web site.

Herb,
In reply to your query about the pub date of the books. Vol I was originally
published in 1952 and a second printing was done in 1988. Vol II was
published in 1966. There is also a volume - "The Story Of The Family Of
John Clough Of Salisbury, MA" which includes stories of John and some of his
descendants.
George
They were published in 1952 & 1966.

Ginny:
There were a group of Cloughs in Belchertown
Ma in the 1780s. Belchertown is all but adjacent to the Hadleys.
I have xerox records of the families of Luther
and Benjamin Clough. According to IGI they were brothers along with
several others, all of whom were born in Stafford,Tolland,Ct not
far from the Mass border.
The following is a tabulation of the 1790 & 1800 census for
Hampshire County. I suggest that the best candidate for the father
of Eunice is Amasa. Benjamin & Luther each had 4 children in Belchertown
in the 1780s, and Eunice is not among either family. Furthermore, Ben
does not have any girls the right age for the 1800 census, and Luther is
not in the 1800 census

By the way,are you aware that according to the information below your
Jennette Patterson was 15 when she married Daniel Peabody?
Has it ever happened? Of course!
Did it happen in this case?, very unlikely.
Ginny, in the spirit of trying to deconfuse ...
Gail & Don report that The Clough genealogy said that three
of David & Damoris's children were born in either Sudbury or
Salem.
Elizabeth was the ONLY Clough record in Sudbury.
Elizabeth has NOTHING to do with the list of David' children.
Her inclusion was by way of showing that there is NOTHING in
the Sudbury VR having ANYTHING to do with David & Damoris's
children.
There is also NOTHING in the Salem VR having ANYTHING to do with
David & Damoris's children.
The Clough genealogy said the the first three of David & Damoris's
children were born in either Sudbury or Salem.
Neither Sudbury nor Salem VR have ANY VR's for the list of children
that GJC documents as children of David & Susanna Clough.
Since GJC was clearly wrong about Sudbury & Salem, I think it would
be very imprudent to think that GJC is right about Eunice, particularly
since GJC doesn't even pretend to know where David & Damoris were
married, let alone where Eunice was born.

Update to earlier posting at 5:10 PM 11/27/99
Can somebody post when the "GJC" book was published &
by whom?
Went to the local library.
It does not have Hingham VR.
There is 1 (ONE) Clough/Clow/Cluff in the published Sudbury,Ma VR
A birth of Elisabeth Clough to Jason & w. Jul 13 1775
There is a group of 15 Cluff births in the SALEM VITAL RECORDS.
One of them is a David Cluff b Dec 19 1750.
All 15 are siblings. Children of Joseph & Susanna Cluff.
They were born between 1735 & 1753. STRONG women, those
colonials!
By the way: each of the 15 entries comes not from Salem Town Clerk
But rather are a transcription of "Bible record now is possession
of Milon O. Cluff of Haverhill". Therefore, they are secondary
sources not primary sources.
There is ONE relevant "Clough" birth in the Salem VR.
Elizabeth, d. Joseph and Susanna (Reeves), Dec. 6, 1737. This
matches the Elizabeth entry under "Cluff", except that the
surname "Reeves" is omitted.
I suggest the Clough society consider underwriting an effort to
verify all the entries in the book, and publish a new edition.

Hi Ginny,
What I have on the Eunice that you inquired about is that she was born Apr 21,
1781, her father, David Clough was b. Dec. 19, 1750, and m. Damoris Smith who was
b. Aug. 1, 1751. They m. Jan. 11, 1774. They had the children listed below. My
sources are included (GJC=The Genealogy of the Descendants of John Clough of
Salisbury, MA). Notice that my other source for David Clough's birth has him as a
Cluff.
Hope it helps.

I am hoping someone on this list may be able to help me connect Eunice
CLOUGH with her parents and lineage. All I know about her is that she
was married 17 Nov.1803 to Abraham PATTERSON in North Hadley,
Hampshire,MA. The couple moved to Henniker Twp.,Merrimack, New
Hampshire, by 1804 when their daughter, Jennette, was born. She married
Daniel PEABODY in North Stonington, New London, CT. 23 Jan 1820. He was
descended from John PABODY of Duxbury MA and from the daughter of John
ALDEN and Priscilla MULLINS. If anyone has any further information about
Eunice or her family, I will be very grateful if you will contact me.
Thank You.
