Hi Cousins,
I'm hoping someone can help Paul.
Actually, in his email he said I have Hannah marrying Reuben Whittier,
but he was incorrect. I have her marrying Nathaniel Whittier, Reuben
was Nathaniel's father.
Paul,
Quite interesting. Not all of the information in the Clough genealogy
books is 100% accurate. I've
copied this email to the Clough List; maybe someone else can shed some
more light on this.
Here's what I've found:
Thomas & Mary Gile Clough below, had a daughter Hannah who married
Hilton Woodman
(according to the Clough Genealogy book). All of their children are
listed. Page 119 of v.1 says of
Hannah 'Born probably in 1727 at Salisbyr, Mass. On Nov. 26, 1741 she
married Hilton
Woodman. (See Hoyt, page 460)'.

3 Dec 1734 and having 8 children, the last of them William

My conundrum is this: I have Hanah Clough, one in the same as your

Thanks for any assistance.

Isn't John Clough a little early for that? You will have to find your
ancestor who was alive during the Revolution. Ir is very possible that
ancestor is another John Clough, who was descended from the John Clough the
homepage focuses on.

Dear Cousins,
My mother, Margaret Joyal Stevens Parent, passed away
on Sept. 16, 1998, about 8:30 p.m., after an illness of
about 2 1/2 months. She died in the ICU of Charlotte
Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, CT.
She was born on April 4, 1927 in Colchester, Vt. She was
71 yrs. old. She was the daughter of Joseph Theophilus Joyal
and Eva May Clough.
The funeral was at the Cabot Vt. United Church, on Sept. 21,
and burial was in the Durant Cemetery in Cabot, Vt. on that
date.
She was a member of Clough-L, and the assistant genealogist
for the JCGS. In addition she was co-genealogist for the
Jacques Jouiel Genealogical Society. She was also co-president
of the Cabot Alumni Association for the past 10 years, which
she founded.
My apologies for not being available to the list for the last
3 months, while I was with my mother in the hospital. I'm sure
that I'll have many other obligations over the next few months
also, as her affairs must be dealt with. So I apologize in
advance if I do not reply to any of you in a timely manner.

Hi everyone,
No I did not read this, but recently talked with the conservationist at
the Special Collections of our library at college on how to preserve the
164 year old diary that I recently inherited.
It was interesting because I was telling him how great it was that I could
possibly scan the diary and save it to disk. He told me that yes I could
possibly scan it, but that I should plan on printing it out on 100% cotton
paper that was slightly buffered and to store in somewhere dark. He said
it would last much longer than the technology of my current computer...
Now I ask you; what do we do with all those 33s we have in storage??? I
occasionaly listen to them and I actually have people say to me, "You
STILL have a TURNTABLE?"
That makes me feel a little aged!
Talk later....

wow, thank you for publishing the article on preservation of records, it
reminds us that even though our computers do help alot,( after all, how do we
all keep in touch), that they are also a little dangerous to rely on in
regards to our preservation of family records...
Chris Clough
p.s. i was told that i am through john clough, eligible for SAR and
American Partriots (i think thats its name), but am curious as to what
exactly they constitute so far as membership, and what the organizations
stand for?
I read with interest, the following letter that was in Dear Abby's Column
on September 23, 1998. Perhaps other noticed it too.
When I think of how compact discs evolved of the years -- first as single
cylinders, then 78 records, followed by 45 rpm records and later 33 album
records. The industry then went to 8 track tape followed by cassettes
and now we enjoy compact discs. And our sons tell me that there is
something even better out there that is being developed.
So this professor has a valid point. This industry is growing so rapidly
that new computers are obsolete almost the minute you buy them.
I offer it as "food for thought".
Dear Abby:
There is a genuine tragedy awaiting "Wondering Mom" and anyone else who
thinks that storing precious family information on a computer disk is the
perfect high-tech solution to the problem of combing preservation and
privacy.
By the time her 2 1/2 year old daughter is old enough to care about her
grandfather's autobiography, no one outside a couple of computer musseums
will be able to retrieve it from the disk -- if she's incredibly lucky.
I've been using computers for 20 years, and I have multiple generations
of disks gathering dust now that, for all practical purposes are
unreadable. The hardware changes. The software change. Beware!
If "Wondering Mom want to save that document, she should print it out
now, giving though to the printer and print cartridge, on 100 percent
cotton or linen rag buffered paper with a neutral pH, and store it in a
nondestructive archival folder in a dark, safe place, like a safe-deposit
vault. Abby, you should have told her to use the silly disk for a
coaster (after printing the file). That way it would be good for
something.
Dennis Grafflin, professor of history
Bates College, Lewiston, Maine
Her reply:
Dear Professor Grafflin:
Thank you for offering your computer experitse and warning my readers not
to blindly expect technology to solve their archival problems. In many
instances, paper is still the way to go.
Dear Cousins,
The new Clough Society bulletin arrived today! :-)
Society members owe Carl and Jerry a great deal of gratitude for the excellent
job they do in collecting and organizing the information put forth in the
bulletins!
Thanks again for another fine bulletin! :-)
Sincerely,
Sheila Andersen
Hi Jackie:
There was no August Bulletin -- the bulletin is only published 4 times a
year, March, June, September and December.
The September issue should be in your mail box any day now and is being
sent to your Bridgeton, NJ address.
Jerry Cluff,
Portland, OR
Hi Cousins!
It sure has been some time since I have been on here.
I am sorry to have missed posting the August and Sept birthdays! I
can t find my birthday listings! I will keep looking though. Just
goes to show that I was not as coordinated when moving s I thought I
was! lol.
I wonder if someone can tell me if the Sept bulletin has come out yet?
I didn't get one, for that matter I didn't get the August one either!
Thanks,
Jackie

Thanks for the reply. My best guess is that they lived and probably
died in Erie County Pennsylvania. Probably in the Cranesville to
Girard area. I know that Mary Breese's Father is buried in the
Platea Cemetery.
