CLOW surname research.
For those of us researching our CLOW roots I recently "stumpled" across
this reference regarding CLOW. This is from "The Surnames of Scotland,
Their Orgin, Meaning, and History, by George F. Black, reprinted
1962, page 156:
CLOW, of local origin from the small place of the name in the parish of
Dunning, Perthshire.
Lawrence Clow was witness in Perth, 1547 (Rollok,28)
Andrew Clow in Pett. parish of Muthill 1663 and fourteen more of the
name from 1610 onward, are recorded in Dunblane Commissoriot Record.
Laurence Clow in Gillgrastowne (now Kilgraston)
John Clow, merchant in Crieff, 1717, and three other of the name are
in Dunkeld Commissariot Record.
A payment was made to Agnes Clow in Edinburgh 1736, and Jenny Clow in
Edinburgh bore a son Robert Burns, the poet.
The above is from the book I mentioned above. I hope this information
helps those in their search.
Has anyone out there have any information regarding those CLOW's
mentioned above?
During my readings at the library I learned the Clow's and the general
populance moved often, back and forth between England and Scotland.
Therefore it is easy for me to assume that name spelling may of changed
for a variety of reasons. Perhaps to avoid bill collection and jail,
to obtain land, political reasons, family disagreements, and the list
could go on forever. What's your input?
Please share your thoughts with me, as I am eager to learn more about
our Clow, Clough, and etc. roots.
