Im trying to confirm some information that Ive located about John Clough.
Hoping someone can clear this up for me:
Hi, this is my first time posting a request....
I'm trying to confirm some information that I've come across....
According to D.W.Hoyts "Old Families of Salsbury and Amesbury" and Hottens
Original Lists of Persons of Quality" , John Clough came over from England in
the "Elizabeth", under the command of William Stagg. However, according to the
passenger lists on URL "www.primenet.com/~langford/places/new_engl.htm#
1634/35", there is no mention of John Clough as being on the "Elizabeth".
Which information is correct? Did John indeed travel on the Elizabeth and did
it depart from London?
Also, is his wife Jane's last name Clough as well - maiden name as well as
married?
Thankyou, Tim

Am looking for information on some of the Cloughs who lived in Texas in the 1860's.
Particularly Katie Clough, born 1852 in Kentucky. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Morrell Clough, born in NH, and Louisa Van Zandt, born in TN. Jeremiah made the unfortunate decision of leading a charge from Fort Donelson, TN against Union forces during Grant's first major victory of the Civil War.
There were several other Cloughs from that area of Texas who were involved in the Civil War, and any information on them would be appreciated, too.

Pennsylvania Foreign Oaths of Allegiance
This database lists the names of immigrants who took the oath of
allegiance to the province and state of Pennsylvania from 1727-1775.
All males over sixteen years of age were obliged to take this oath and
declaration, as soon after their arrival as possible. Each entry
includes the individual's name, age, place of nationality, and
occupation. Taking an oath of allegiance was a process undergone during
early colonial emigration. In this oath, immigrants declared they would
be faithful to King George II.

Hello Bonnie, George, Jerry, Carl and the list,
Thank you so much for the information, I will be thrilled to get those
books as I have coveted them for quitw some time but could not see
paying the Higginson's price.
I have posted my line in a query to the list before and it seems that no
one knows any more than I do about Zack. I will try again as I know we
have picked up more subscribers but I don't have much hope of ever
finding him. All I have ever found is an 1850 census record for him in
Canton, St. Lawrence Co. N.Y. I feel sure that he must have died there
not too long after the census as his wife turns up back in Errol, N.H.
married and having given birth to a son to second husband Ira Carter in
1856. No vital record of his death in N.H. I feel sure that he was the
Zactus listed in the 1830 census for Lyman, N.H. but nothing there
connects him with the Cloughs that were there. The only other time I
have even seen his name is on a marriage record of his daughter and she
just calls her father Zack Clough.
Zactus CLOUGH born circa 1797 in N.H. married before 1843 to Minerva R.
HOWE born 22-Mar-1816, Bradford VT., died 6-Sep-1898, Errol, N.H.
daughter of Tillotsen and Mira (Munn) HOWE. Minerva
children:
1. Mahala R. b: abt. 1843 Canada, m: #1Jared Cone SWETT

2. Mirah H. b: circa 1845, New York State. married Nathan BEECHER
3. John T. b: 27-Apr-1847, N.Y. d: 23-Sep-1910 Errol, N.H. unmarried
4.Ann b:circa 1850, N.Y. m: 20-Dec-1873, Millsfield, N.H. Horace SWETT.
In the 1860 Coos County census, Errol there is in the household of Ira
and Minerva CARTER a 15 year old Maud C. CLOUGH who is a puzzle to me as
she is not in the 1850 census with Zack and Minerva and would be near or
the same age as Mira H.
In the same censu, in Canton, N.Y. is a john CLOUGH that I suspect might
be a brother or at least a close relative.

Hi Kitty,
Contact:
The John Clough Genealogical Society
P.O. Box 239
Marshfield Hills, MA 02051
And I agree with Jerry. It's *much* better to order the books
from the Society. I got some quotes that were waaaay over what
the Society is charging. (Like one price of $200!! :(
>as yet I have been unable to connect my Zacktus Clough to John.
Is that Zacheus? If so, that's my line. Zacheus was married
to Sarah Page, His father was Thomas, Mother Ruth Conner, and
his grandparents are John and Jane. :)

Hi,
Saw reference to the purchase of the two volume Clough Genealogy books.
Does someone have an address or an e-mail address for contacting the
person selling the books? I do not belong to the society, as yet I have
been unable to connect my Zacktus Clough to John.
Kitty
As some of you know or may not know, the John Clough Genealogical Society has
a family reunion every summer. All Cloughs are most welcome. This year it is
in Kennebunkport, Maine, on August 8th and Paula Day, the society's secretary
is coordinating the event.
For those who have no information on the reunion, I am sending along the story
published in the March issue of the Clough Bulletin.
My husband and I are looking forward to the trip east for the ocassion -- it
should be a pleasant day.
Most sincerely,
Jerry & Carl Cluff
Reunion August 8th in Kennebunkport
Kennebunkport, Maine, the site of the 1998 Family Reunion, is rich in family
history of the descendants of Samuel-4. In Samuels days, the community was
called Arundel. Here in Arundel, Samuel-4 raised his children.
The Arundel Meeting House, which still stands today, is now the First
Congregational Church, site of this years John Clough Genealogical Society
Reunion. The Meeting House was a vital part of Samuel's life and the
families of Arundel. Samuel was a tythingman . Church records of Samuels
family were preserved here.
As Samuel's family grew and multiplied, some stayed in Arundel and others
migrated to the surrounding areas of Alfred, Parsonsfield, Biddeford, Saco,
Waterborough, Hollis and other communities.
For years Leroy Smith, son of Georgia Olivia,#2799, Vol II, maintained
the Clough Cemetery at Goose Rocks Road. His grandson, Richard Wormwood,
continued in his grandfathers tradition of maintaining the cemetery.
At one time there were as many as 40 Clough/Cluff descendants living in
Kennebunkport.
Eva Clough Speare, Ruth Cluff Knight and Hilda Clough Lincoln who contributed
so unselfishly to the genealogies, had roots very deep in the area.
Today Kennebunkport has long been a favorite spot among artists and
writers who have found both its history and quaint setting conducive to
creativity. Many galleries and craft shops attest to Kennebunkports
continuing affinity with the arts.
Dock Square houses boutiques and galleries; Parsons Way boasts a scenic
walkway beginning at Dock Square; cruises are available for whale watching
and sightseeing. Beyond the village, Ocean Avenue follows the rocky shores of
Cape Arundel, past President George Bush's summer home, to Cape Porpoise, a
year round fishing village.
Their Seashore Trolley Museum has one of the worlds oldest and largest
collections of antique electric trolley cars.
The local Historical Society is just a few hundred feet from the church for
those that might want to do some research.
There are guided tours on a motorized trolley around the beaches and other
points of interest
Salisbury, MA, the home of our progenitor, is only 42 miles from
Kennebunkport. Some may wish to see the memorial erected by the society to
John and Jane Clough at the Salisbury Plains Cemetery.
There is much to do in and around the area. You may want to plan a few extra
days culminating wih the Clough Reunion.
The 1998 Reunion which will be held Saturday, August 8th, at the First
Congregational Church should be a most pleasant day. Mark it on your
calendar!
Dorothy Ann Clough#5144,Vol II who is the president of the Ladies' Society at
the church will be "chef of the day". At noon she will serve a turkey dinner
with all the fixings for $9. The evening meal will be a lighter fare and
will cost $6. Dorothy's husband is also a Cluff, the son of Nahum
Cluff#4452,Vol II.
Watch for your June issue of The Clough Bulletin for more detailed
information regarding the day's activities and reservation form.
Perhaps some of you have entertained the idea of getting a set of the
society's genealogy. If this is a consideration on your part, the best buy is
through the society.
I wrote to Higginson Book Co. in Salem, MA looking for a copy of A Merrill
Memorial which they did not have but they set their catalog anyway. Listed
among their holdings is the 1st volume of the Clough genealogy for $75 and the
second volume for 43.50. And these are undoubtedly copies. The society's
price is $30 and $20 respectively. They are available through Adeline Clough
of Bethel, ME
I'm passing this info on for whatever value it might have to you.
