Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Heres a little story I found I thought it was an interesting parody
of the format for military report writing author unknown.
Hood, Riding, Red, Little.
Once upon a time, there was a female personnel whose nomenclature was
Hood, Riding, Red, Little, (one each). She was a girl, little, happy.
Her duty uniform consisted of the following named items: (1) Dress, red,
cotton, shade 76, (one each); (2) Cape, HBT, red w/hood, (one each).
Her MOS was 94B4S, food handler.
One day Hood, Riding, Red, Little received a TWX from her Mother,
Grand, Old, who was billeted off-post in a cottage, brick, red, Capehart
type, w/chimney, w/o TV, initial A/DPEN issue, (one each). The TWX read
as follows:
Dear Hood. This is to advise you that morning report should read: DY
to SK conf to qrts as of 0100 hrs, 680101. Went on sick call yesterday
(LD: yes), conf for indef pd. However, I am feeling somewhat better.
Love, related-type Mother, Grand, Your. Added: Pls see about Sep Rat
for me. MGY.
Hood took the TWX to the message center with the following 1st
endorsement: Basic communication complied with. ETA your station
approx 1600 hrs this day.
While en route to the TDY destination, personnel concerned came to a
forest, thick, primeval. Suddenly, out of the thicket, briar, emerged a
wolf, brown, bad, big, (one each). Wolf said, Halt, who goes there,
and what are your last four?
Hood answered, Hood, Riding, Red, Little. 4032. I am en route to my
TDY point and am looking for the house of my Mother, Grand, Old.
It is two klicks down the road; turn left at Building 2355,
instructed the wolf.
How do you know where she lives? questioned Hood.
Ive pulled guard duty in those parts, said Wolf, who then caught a
bus to the Grannys. Upon arrival, wolf, bad, swallowed Granny with a
gulp, single (one each). Wolf then policed up the area, including butt
cans, and jumped into bed, initial A/DPEN issue type, and pulled on
Grannys AC 146-92s.
Hood, entering: Hello, Mother, Grand.
The fool, little, stupid, does not know that it is really me, the
wolf, bad, big, chuckled the wolf.
My, what big EENT you have, exclaimed Hood, Riding, Red, Little.
All the better to maintain maximum efficiency at minimum cost with
zero defects, replied the wolf.
Then, entered the chopper, wood type, handsome. Chopper killed wolf
with a blow (one each) and performed necessary surgical procedures to
remove Mother, Grand, from the stomach of wolf, bad, big, dead. With
allowance for quarters and rations, the all lived after, ever, happily.
hope you all like it..
chris.
once again, the author of this is some unknown soldier. exerpted form
"war stories of the Green Berets, the Viet Nam experience," a
compilation of stories, put together by author Hans Halberstadt.
Hi to all;
Having fun on my vacation doing my genealogy and was amazed to find:
Elsa Peverly Kimball who wrote a chapter in _The Story of the Family of
John Clough of Salisbury, Massachusetts_ was just identified as my 6th
and 8th cousin once removed.
Connections are through the Hills surname and Clough surname.
Madly typing away.....
Sue
Since this relates to a Massachusetts Union Army man, I will send it back
North. A Confederate family would like to receive that treatment.
Best wishes,
Emmett

Hi Frank,
I'm not researching the Heath family. I have several Clough's in my database and
therefore, several other surnames which I'm not related to or researching.
I've copied this to the CLOUGH list in case someone else can help you.

Sorry for the error in my first message folks. William joined the army in
1861, not 1864 so his birth year would have been about 1831.
That's what you get for getting excited, mistakes.
Gary
Hello all.
I found some new information about my brick wall that I hope will ring a bell
with someone on the list.
William H. Clough was born about 1834. He enlisted in the Union army in 1864
at Camp Dennison in Cincinnati, OH at "about 30 yrs of age". After the war he
settled in Macon Co, MO.
In the 1870 census he listed his birth state as Michigan but now I have seen
the 1880 census where he states he and both parents were born in New
Hampshire.
This NH connection is new so I thought I would see if anyone could make a
connection for me.
Thanks
Gary
I have a number of clough obituaries and newspaper clippings that give a
persons age and date of death. Have found the following helpful.
DETERMINING DATE OF BIRTH - from :
http://www.rootsweb.com/~hcpd/formula.htm
Bette Butcher Topp provided the following simple formula for determining a
birthdate when you know the date of death and age. It's called "Formula

Example: Died 6 May 1889 18890506
Age 71 years 7 mos. 9 days 710709

Reminder to all of you, I have published the two volumns on my web site,
intermingled with the rest of my database. Some corrections have been
made so you may see differences from what the books have. I'm working
on a list of corrections and will make it available to all when I'm
finished.
I'm currently working on verifying the data in the books with other
sources. If anyone would like to assist and give me the sources,
especially for states other than NH & MA, we can work together on this.

To move your Genealogy Report to a word processor such as Word 6, go to the
person in FTM, click on him or her, go to Genealogy report, set style you want,
then go to FILE in far upper left and click on EXPORT Genealogy report. It will
then ask you where to. Works fast and great. Kathy

Yes!!!!!
I tried this 'cut from Outline' and paste into a word processor method and
it worked great. When I highlighted one line and did a 'copy' it pasted the
entire report into the word processor, but that's OK.
Worked on a Report pretty well, but the formatting bars in the Family
Group Sheet produced strange (kind of squished) results for me, but that may
have been my page setup on that one. The 'Generation Report' came out
perfectly when pasted into Word - including the superscript characters for
the footnotes.
Even the Descendant and Ancestor graphs popped into Word as graphics and
could be expanded and shrunk to fit the page (to a certain extent, anyway).
Much faster and easier than my 'create a generic printer' method which
doesn't work on the graphs at all.
And I agree. FTM's lack of ability to produce a semi-formatted text file is
really a detriment to their customers.

Maureen - you can create a text file from FTM and include only the line you want
from the Outline Descendant tree (this is a way to save the line for export as
separate file too). Run the tree from first ancestor - under contents select
items and individuals to customize (notice option for direct line). Once you've
run the report, copy and then you can import into word processor to clean it up
(try search and replace tabs and spaces to make it readable) or just leave it as
it is - sometimes it looks better copied directly into email. Why FTM hasn't an
option for creating a simple text tree both confounds and irritates me - I've made
the suggestion several times - it has to do with their wanting to have proprietary
use of people's files with World Family Tree (so no other company can make use of
or sell files) and they don't think it important enough to designate the time for
their programmers to figure out how to do one thing as well as the other. Write

months with 304 days in a year that began with March. Two more months,
January and February, were added later in the 7th century BC, but because the
months were only 29 or 30 days long, an extra month had to be intercalated
approximately every second year. The days of the month were designated by the
awkward method of counting backward from three dates: the calends, or first of
the month; the ides, or middle of the month, falling on the 13th of some
months and the 15th of others; and the nones, or 9th day before the ides. The
Roman calendar became hopelessly confused when officials to whom the addition
of days and months was entrusted abused their authority to prolong their terms
of office or to hasten or delay elections.
In 45 BC Julius Caesar, upon the advice of the Greek astronomer
Sosigenes, decided to use a purely solar calendar. This calendar, known as
the Julian calendar, fixed the normal year at 365 days, and the leap year,
every fourth year, at 366 days. Leap year is so named because the extra day
causes any date after February in a leap year to "leap" over one day in the
week and to occur two days later in the week than it did in the previous year,
rather than just one day later as in a normal year. The Julian calendar also
established the order of the months and the days of the week as they exist in
present-day calendars. In 44 BC Julius Caesar changed the name of the month
Quintilis to Julius (July), after himself. The month Sextilis was renamed
Augustus (August) in honor of the Roman emperor Caesar Augustus, who succeeded
Julius Caesar. Some authorities maintain that Augustus established the length
of the months we use today.
The Julian year was 11 min. and 14 sec. longer than the solar year. This
discrepancy accumulated until by 1582 the vernal equinox occurred 10 days
early and church holidays did not occur in the appropriate seasons. To make
the vernal equinox occur on March 21, as it had in AD 325, the year of the
First Council of Nicaea, Pope Gregory XIII issued a decree dropping 10 days
from the calendar. To prevent further displacement he instituted a calendar,
known as the Gregorian calendar, that provided that century years divisible
evenly by 400 should be leap years and that all other century years should be
common years. Thus, 1600 was a leap year, but 1700 and 1800 were common
years.
The Gregorian calendar, or New Style calendar, was slowly adopted
throughout Europe. It is used today throughout most of the Western world and
in parts of Asia. When the Gregorian calendar was adopted in Great Britain in
1752, another correction of an 11 day discrepancy was made; the day after
Sept. 2, 1752, became Sept. 14. The British also adopted January 1 as the day
when a new year begins.
Hope this helps! :-)

Hello all-
Several people have asked that I provide a more detailed Clough
lineage. Is there an alternative to cutting and pasting from a text
file I type up? More specifically, is there a way to designate only a
certain line in my FTM file be printed out or listed? It seems so
simple. I don't want to burden people with a huge file when they're
only interested in 20 or 30 names. And I might as well get it all out
in the open--why do some of my dates show up as two years (see below, I
left one or two in); for instance, one year shows up as "1699/00". I'm
guessing it has something to do with Roman calendars and such. Any more
details?
I apologize if this is an idiotic question-I'd rather look dumb than
actually ending up that way for fear of asking!
Thanks!
