Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
The paragraphs below were copied from another mail list. I am passing it on
because it appears to be authentic and needs to be brought out into public
discussion before it is put into law. Note the email address where you can
register your concern. Spread the word - note deadline is 2/13/98.

I am writing you this to inform you of a very important matter
currently under review by the FCC. Your local telephone company has filed a
proposal with the FCC to impose per minute charges for your internet
service. They contend that your usage has or will hinder the operation of
the telephone network.
It is my belief that internet usage will diminish if users were
required to pay additional per minute charges. The FCC has created an email
box for your comments, responses must be received by February 13, 1998. Send
your comments and tell them what you think.
mailto:isp@fcc.gov
Every phone company is in on this one, and they are trying to sneak it in
just under the wire for litiagation. Let everyone you know hear this one.
Get the e-mail address to everyone you can think of.
Leigh, I have never had this problem.
Take care,
Emmett

Hi Leigh,
This question just came up on the listowners list. I didn't see a

Hello cousins,
Like Vern and Liz, I would like to wish you all a wonderful and healthy
1998 and may God provide for you and yours.
On another note, I have been very slow in receiving all of the CLOUGH-L
mail and reading it. Yesterday I recieved it and combined it into a single
file and after editing out all that e-mail jargon I had 86 pages of printed
messages. Wow!
I took note of one which I found particularly interesting. The one from
Sue Irons about Elizabeth Brown whos daughter Elizabeth married Samuel
Clough. The witch connection is very close to me as I am a direct
descendant of Mary (Towne) Esty
daughter of William and Johanna (Blessing) Towne and wife of Isaac Esty.
Mary was one of the last seven victims of that terrible delusion that
spread over New England in 1692. She was hung on September 22, 1692.
September 22 happens to be my grand nephews birthday, my niece's wedding
anniversary as well as Kathy and my wedding anniversary a coincidence that
was, to my knowledge, not planned, particularly in the case of my grand
nephew.
Although Mary was not a Clough the history of that time affected all; even
the Clough family as noted in "The Story" published by the JCGS.
A little history of Mary is included here:
Mary was born in England, Married daughter of William Towne and Joannah
Blessing
"ISAAC ESTY AND SOME OF HIS DECENDANTS" By Gay Esty Bangs (Date unknown).
"Mary
Towne was born at Yarmouth, Norfolk Co., England, and baptized at St.
Nicholus church, Aug. 24, 1634. We know little of her life until 1692,
when that terrible witchcraft delusion spread over Salem Village and
vicinity. Amoung those to fall victim was Mary Esty. Her sister Rebecca
Nourse, about thirteen years older, had previously been accused, found
guilty and executed July 19, 1692."
Before Mary was executed she wrote a letter to the magistrate to plead
mercy for those who might follow her. The contents of that letter
follows:
"The Humble Petition of Mary Easty unto his Excellency Sir
William
Phips, and to the Honored judge and Bench now sitting in
Judicature in
Salem, and the Reverend Ministers, humbly showeth, That,
whereas, your
poor humble petitioner, being condemned to die, do humbly
beg of you
to take it in your judicious and pious consideration that
your poor
and humble petitioner, knowing my own innocency, blessed be
the Lord
for it! and seeing plainly the wiles and subtility of my
accusers by
myself, cannot but judge charitably of others that are going
the same
way of myself, if the Lord steps not mightily in. I was
confined a
whole month upon the same account that I am condemned now
for, and
then cleared by the afflicted persons, as some of Your Honors
know.
And in two days' time I was cried out upon them, and have
been
confined, and now am condemned to die. The Lord knows my
innocency
then, and likewise does now, as at the great day will be
known to men
and angels. I petition to Your Honors not for my own life,
for I know
I must die, and my appointed time is set; but the Lord he
knows it is
that, if it be possible, no more innocent blood may be shed,
which
undoubtedly cannot be avoided in the way and course you go
in. I
question not but Your Honors do to the utmost of your powers
in the
discovery and detecting of witchcraft and witches, and would
not be
guilty of innocent blood for the world. But, by my own
innocency, I
know you are in the wrong way. the Lord in his infinite
mercy direct
you in this great work, if it be his blessed will that no
more
innocent blood be shed! I would humbly beg you, that Your
Honors
would be pleased to examine these afflicted persons strictly,
and keep
them apart some time, and likewise to try some of these
confessing
witches; I being confident there is several of them has
belied
themselves and others, as will appear, if not in this world,
I am sure
in the world to come, Whither I am now agoing. I question
not but you
will see an alteration of these things. They say myself and
others
having made a league with the Devil, we cannot confess. I
know, and
the Lord knows, as will ... appear, they belie me, and so I
question
not but they do to others. The Lord above, who is the
Searcher of all
hearts, knows, as I shall answer it at the tribunal seat,
that I know
not the least thing of witchcraft; Therefore I cannot, I dare
not,
belie my own soul. I beg your Honors not to deny this my
humble
petition from a poor, dying, innocent person. And I question
not but
the Lord will give a blessing to your endeavors."
Isaac worked twenty long years to clear his wife of the charge and was
to some measure successful when the court annulled the verdict and awarded
the sum of twenty pounds in acknowledgement to the injustice.
Why is it that with some issues of the digest, I get a dark blue filter over
the entire issue. It makes it virtually impossible to read. The last one which
was so covered, I saved in hopes it would get better, but the saved version
was covered in black - which completely obliterated it.
Has anyone else run up against this? How have you solved it?
Hello Family,
I know that some of you will be going out tonight and party for the New
Year and you've heard it all before but I wanted to remind you, please take
care of yourselves and have a very good time. There are some dates in our
records that I don't want to see filled in. We haven't met in person but I
feel we have gotten close and I will worry just the same.
For those of you that are like the wife and I, (staying home) I plan
on,(but don't know if I'll make it) staying up tonight and will be on here
most of the evening should anyone just want to talk.
HAPPY NEW YEARS

Hi Judy/CJ,
You could try downloading "Paint Shop Pro" from the Web. I found that the
program that came with my scanner didn't work well.:( I don't have the URL
off-hand for "PSP", but I'm sure you could find the site easily with a web
search. It only took a few minutes to download, and it's a very nice
scanner program.
I'm not sure if I have the OCR program you mention, but if you want to
guide me where to "search" for it to see if I have it, I'll be happy to
look, and if I do have it, I can play around and might be able to help you
with it...

well, I finally found an OCR program on the computer that came with the
scanner to scan text files. as soon as I figure it out I will scan the 8
pages of Cloughs' in the Revolutionary War and send out to those who

Dear Cousins!
Right now I expect you are all very busy with your families, and that
is as it should be. I would like to say that I have enjoyed having an
expanded family more than you will ever know! It has meant a great
deal to me - being able to get to know each of you. And as my Uncle
Vern so nicely put it, I hope it continues for a long time to come!
So with that I will close with a Holiday Greeting from The Gilligan
household to all of you and yours across the miles! And tell you that
we are there right along with you helping you enjoy this season in
spirit!

Dear Family,
We have only been together for a short while and that was only made
possable through the use of the internet and a few people that really cared
enough to make it happen. I thank you, one and all for that right now.
We are about to go through our first Christmas holiday and enter a new year
together. I hope that in the coming year we'll be able to expand on and
explore the history of our family and also learn a little more about each
other.
We all started with the desire to learn about our past but in the process,
I have found that I've also made a lot of new friends along the way and it
has now become a great adventure. I can only hope that it will go on for a
long time to come.
Being that I have stated the way I feel, I will now just wish you and
yours, from our home to yours, all the very best for this our first holiday
season.
Love,
Vernon Clough
MY FAMILY IS MY WORLD AND THE WORLD IS GETTING BIGGER
Hi Cousins!
First I want to say I am sorry to the following cousins: Marjean
Workman, George Estey, and Leigh Woodward. I have been unable to do
up your books as yet. I have been having computer problems alot
lately. As soon as possible I will get them done and out. Hopefully
by this weekend.
Next, to those of you that have gotten your books already, if there
are corrections needed then please let me know and I will make them
and then send one big correction to the list for each of you to make
the proper adjustment to your copies.
There is some listed below already.
Carl Cluff - I have him married to Geraldine R Merrill, and also
married to Geraldine Ruth Merrill. (same person) ((OOPS!)) Please
take the Geraldine R Merrill off your copy.
I also have one of his daughters last names spelled as Clough not
Clough. I haven't fixed that portion on my copy as yet, so I am not
sure which one it is. I will keep you posted on it.
I also am trying to fix a relationship error to do with Liz Walker's
lineage. But for some reason I am unable to do this at the present
time. I will also keep youposted on this correction when I get if
fixed.
Hope you all have a great holiday. jackie

Hi Judy,
Yes, it's possible to do what you wish to do, except you can't send the
attachments to the list. (or to any list). :( What you can do, is scan
the documents, save them as files, announce to the list that you have them
available, then those who can open the attachments can ask you to send them
in private e-mail. The reason they can't go through the list is that not
everyone has a system that can handle attachments.

Hi Cousins,
I have a favor to ask of each of you. If for some reason you are
sending me a message privately, then please do so on this address for
awhile. It seems I am having problems with the other email address.
I have sent them a message - but who knows how long that will take
before I get an answer. Thanks alot.
And if I don't get to talk with everyone before I hope you all have a
great, safe, and happy Holiday!
