Dear List,
As it turns out, it was for the best that we did not have enough interest
in another Clough Family Trip to Britain for this year since we would
currently be among the many thousands of people stranded in Britain, Scandinavia,
and Europe due to volcanic ash sweeping over those areas from the
Icelandic volcano erupting.
As an "Act of God" airlines and hotels do not owe their passengers or
guests anything since they are not the ones responsible for the event preventing
folks from traveling. Although spending extra time in Britain would have
been nice, the economic repercussions and turmoil (especially for me as the
tour leader) from constantly having to check with the airlines and trying
to find places for us all to stay would have taken their toll.
It has been amazing to watch all of this unfold on the news for the past
several days! I hope all of you are well and safe! :-)
I am not sure if another trip will be offered for the Spring of 2011. I
will have a better idea after the summers events.
Best Wishes To All,
Sheila Andersen

Dear Cousins, Sheila and I wish to extend our most heartfelt gratitude to
all who have contacted us, whether by telephone, social networking sites or
private emails, expressing their concern for our safety and
well-being during these historic floods.Rhode Island seems to be the
epicenter and the river closest to us the most affected. Thus far we are
fine (just inconvenienced because of Sewage Treatment Plant if off line
(flooded out) and road closures (including I-95 though Warwick and Cranston,
parts of which were under 3' of water yesterday). Last night was rather
restless awaiting the "knock on the door". Our bags are packed and we are
ready to evacuate. Many of our neighbors have left but our side of the the
street has not been ordered out (yet). While the rains have stopped, the
destruction of the raging waters has not abated. Yesterday afternoon, a
couple of miles from us, the Pawtuxet River caused the collapse of a portion
of an historic mill and eroded the supports for an adjacent bridge. The dam
associated with that mill is in imminate danger of failure. If that happens,
it is likely that the increased volume of water and the associated debris
will take out other smaller dams downstream, all the way to Narragansett
Bay. The national guard evacuated our neighbors to the south and west of
us. (Our side of the street is just outside of the 500-yr flood zone.)
A point of general interst to all is the FEMA is in the process of redrawing
Flood Zone Maps for most of the nation. Check with your State EMA, County,
City or Town Planning Office to see of your have been adoped yet or if the
puiblic hearing have been scheduled and see where your risk lies.
Again, your prayers and concern are a source of great comfort. Thank you!
