Hi Sheila,
Eva Clough Speare and Guy Speare did not have any children. This can be confirmed by Mrs. Arthur Clough of 2245 Fisher Hill in Chester, VT 05143-8532.

Sheila,
I have been getting over an extended illness. I have revised the notes you
sent to me because there are several small errors in the text you sent me.
If it really is not too late, I will copy those pages and send them to you
immediately. I have received details on the Sutherlands and have my
mother's notes on my wife's Webster connection, but it I am having trouble
fitting that material into the format you sent me!
Now about Eva Speare....Mother was a very close friend and I remember her
very well myself. She was a wonderful, sweet person, and deeply loved her
husband, Guy. After his death, she kept his photo on her desk. I think
there is a copy of her working at her desk in Plymouth NH among the
published Cluff books.
They definitely did NOT have any children.
With best regards,

Thanks as always, Susan for your support! Some tiny clarifications
should be made however to avoid possible confusion.
Only g grandfather for me - Charles C. CLUFF, b 1815 instead of 1816,
Kentucky instead of Ohio but lived in southern Ohio most of his life.
Charles stated his father was born in Maryland on 1880 census.
A perfect DNA 12 marker match was made with a descendant of Samuel
CLOUGH who came to America in 1879 from Cheshire, England. In
addition, there has been a perfect 12 marker match with a CLOW on
Prince Edward Island. It doesn't get more challenging than this! ;)

Dear Richard,
Nancy Cluff Siders and I are both trying to find the lost parents of our ggg grandfathers, mine named George Washington Clough born in Virginia in 1820 then orphaned, and Nancy's born in 1816 in Ohio, with name spelled Cluff. After DNA testing of our male Clough/Cluff relatives through Oxford Ancestors, we discovered that she and I are only one marker off from each other, making us the closest of kin to each other of any that we have discovered through this forum and DNA testing. Since you are named Clough, we would love it if you would join the other Clough males who have had their DNA tested. She believes her ancestors may have come from Cheshire, and all I know is that mine came from England. So please contact Oxford Ancestors (Sheila will have the address) to see about finding any close matches to your DNA and maybe your lost ancestor. Nancy and I have both exhaustively searched the printed historical resources available and have had to resort to DNA testing as our best hope for finding our ancestors. Thanks, Susan

Dear Nancy,
My family is also from the Yorkshire area: Baildon near Shipley, Bradford,
Thornton, etc. Although I can't find any common links to Richard's people,
I believe somewhere we must have common ancestors.
How do I go about getting a DNA test? How much is it? My paternal
grandmother was born in Baildon and was a Clough (daughter of Wilks). My
father is alive and well and could be tested for DNA.
Thanks in advance for the info.

How close is Yorkshire to Cheshire...? Have you or any other CLOUGH

Dear All
I hope I'm pressing the right buttons here, so let's see!
I have traced my tree back to William Clough, born about 1811, in
Adwalton, Drighlington, West Yorkshire. That's just outside Bradford.
He had a wife, Sarah A Booth and nine(!) children - Rhoda (b.1832),
Martha (b.1834), Lanah (b.1837), John B (b.1839), Edwin (b.1841),
William Allen (b.1843), Eria (b.1846), Eliza A (b.1849) and Elizabeth
(b.1854).
William Allen had two boys - Ezra and Harry. Ezra was my Great Great
Grandpa and the founder of the family printing firm which I am pleased
to say is still going strong.
Does anyone have any information prior to William being born about 1811?
It would be great to hear from you if you have.

Dear List,
Family members, Dean and Martha Clough, sent me a wonderful gift some time
ago and, because it has Clough connections, I want to share info about the gift
with all of you.
What was sent to me is a lovely maple leaf shaped glass containing maple
syrup from Clough Valley Maple Syrup! :-) The address of this business is:
Clough Valley Maple Syrup
5531 Clough Pike
Cincinnati, OH 45244
The following information is from their brochure:
"Clough Valley Maple Syrup is located in Clough Creek Valley, a
never-run-dry, glacial, spring-fed stream that is the largest watershed in Anderson
Township and a tributary of the Little Miami River. The Motz family has made this
valley their home for five generations. Clough Valley Maple Syrup is a
partnership of two Motz cousins, Edmund and Matt. The sugar house is made of
rough sawed tulip poplar which Edmund sawed on his mill. It is a single purpose
agricultural structure similar to those found in Northeastern United States.
Our sugar bush is South of Clough Creek, on the North facing slope. It is
a relatively young bush, about fifty to seventy years old, and very densely
populated with maple. Matt's mother can recall when it was a dairy pasture
with only a few beech trees, under which she had picnics. Some of these old
beeches remain today."
Their web address is:
_www.CloughValleySweets.com_ (http://www.CloughValleySweets.com)
>From information obtained online on a proposed business district in the
area, I found the following history of the area:
"The Clough-Hunley business district is located in Anderson Township, Ohio
and Anderson Township is in Hamilton County directly east of the City of
Cincinnati. The business district lies along Clough Pike and is bordered on the
north and south by Bartels Road and Hunley Road. Clough Pike has access to
the major arterial Beechmont Ave. as well as Interstate 275 via Five Mile Road."
"With a lengthy history dating back to the days of the Revolutionary War,
the Clough-Hunley business district saw settlements as early as the 1790's,
shortly after nearby Columbia was founded by Benjamin Stites. At that time,
Anderson Township was a part of the Virginia Military District - land Congress
granted between the Scioto and Miami Rivers to compensate Revolutionary War
veterans in return for Virginia's cession of its claims to the areas (in fact,
Gen. George Washington himself owned a parcel of land near the Little Miami
River). Established shortly thereafter in 1793, Anderson Township was named
for Richard Clough Anderson, Virginia's chief surveyor."
"Small farms and homesteads dotted the Clough Creek Valley; the Miller log
cabin, which remains intact, was built in 1795 and is a reminder of the type of
development common in the early frontier days. Cluff Pike (as it was known
at the time), surveyed in 1805, was the first primary road in the area,
followed by Batavia Pike and Cincinnati West Union Turnpike, today's Beechmont
Ave., both of which were built in 1825. Mills along the Little Miami
represented the chief commercial industries - Turpin, Armstrong and Wickerham Mills
were closest to the Clough Creek area. Eventually, small communities such as
Mt. Washington and Mercersville (present-day Newtown) sprang up along the
stagecoach lines."
"Beginning in the 1840's and lasting until the Second World War was an age
of transportation and rapid industrialization in the region. A stagecoach
line in Anderson Township started in 1846 by Stephen Sutton made new communities
like Mt. Washington accessible to the city of Cincinnati. Cincinnati's
growth began to have a spillover effect on communities in and around Anderson
Township; in the 1870's, an inter-urban rail was built between Mt. Washington
and Cincinnati. Though farms were still dominant in the area, rail had an
immense impact on the population and density - more and more people located along
these main transportation corridors urbanizing places like Mt. Washington
and Newtown."
Let's hear from Clough family members who are related to folks who
live/lived in that area! :-)
Best Wishes,
Sheila Andersen

Dear List,
Beatrice Frederika Clough was born June 17, 1910 in New Haven, CT. Her
parents were Frank Roland Clough (descendant of our John Clough) and Frederika
Hammond. Please see our "The Story of the Family of John Clough of
Salisbury, Massachusetts" book starting on page 225.
Among the many schools Beatrice attended, she also attended a private school
in Simsbury, CT - a school which I know well having grown up nearby.
It was while studying at Oxford University that Beatrice met John Rankin
Rathbone, who became a Member of the British Parliament. They married and had
two children - Pauline and John, Jr. (known as Tim - who later also became a
Member of Parliament).
After John Rathbone's early death in WWII, Beatrice filled her late
husband's seat in Parliament becoming only the second American woman to do so. In
1942, while still serving as a Member of Parliament, Beatrice married Capt.
Paul Wright of the King's Royal Rifle Corps. Beatrice and Paul had a daughter,
Faith. This proved to be quite an historical event - the first Member of
Parliament to have a child while serving!
Capt. Paul Wright was later knighted and became Sir Paul Wright. Thus, his
wife became Lady Wright. In 1982 Lady Wright started the charity Hearing
Dogs for Deaf People (_www.hearingdogs.org.uk_ (http://www.hearingdogs.org.uk)
). Lady Wright remained active in the organization until her death in 2003.
Lady Wright's bereaved husband allowed me to bring my 2003 group of Clough
family members to his home in London where we were delighted to meet him and
their daughter, Faith. Sir Paul continued to allow me personal correspondence
with him until his death in 2005. It was through my continued personal
correspondence with Faith that I was informed of his passing and Faith continues
to bless me with communication from across the Atlantic.
Sir Paul Wright wrote the book "A Brittle Glory." After obtaining a copy
via an online auction I received a copy that had been inscribed by Sir Paul to
his daughter, Faith. The book had been somehow lost in the shuffle of
several moves Faith made years ago between Britain and the United States. When I
brought my then 18 month old son, Rhys, to England and Wales in March of 2006
I was able to present her with her personal copy of her father's book. Her
surprise and appreciation were beyond words. She had lost her father less
than a year previous and was now reading his hand written inscription to her in
a book she thought was lost forever.
Beatrice and Paul's daughter, Faith, will be retiring from her current job
in London and will become the Chairman of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. I
encourage all of you to take a look at their website.
Our John Clough has untold numbers of descendants who have done, and are
doing, amazing things in their lives. It is good to celebrate those we know
about! :-)
Best Wishes To All,
