Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Anyone who believes that they are descended from John who settled in
Salisbury Mass. is welcome to apply for membership in the John Clough
Genealogical Society.
Since 1940, we have helped people "connect the lines" in their genealogies
and form lasting friendships with their cousins, while gathering and
preserving this important part of American Social History.Â
An application for membership can be downloaded from the official JCGS
website. [1]http://www.johncloughgenealogicalsociety.org
Once completed, the form, along with an initial dues payment of $15 can be
mailed to our Treasurer, Mr. John R. Clough, P.O.Box 242, Harwich,
Massachusetts 02645.
You will then be able to receive the Bulletin. Our Genealogist will verify
your information and you will then be granted full membership in the Society
which will entitle you to vote and serve on the various committees and the
Board of Governors.
Anyone who is a member of the Society can obtain a password allowing them
access to the Member's only page(s) of our website. Simply go to the web
site and follow the "Contact Us"Â link.
On behalf of the entire Board and Membership of the Society, I warmly invite
you to join us.

Hi Barbara,
I did not send you an electronic version or printed version of our JCGS
bulletin because I don't see you on our membership list. Are you a JCGS
member? If not, is your husband the member? If so, what is his first name?
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Hi Letha,
Very glad you are enjoying the bulletin! :-)
I did not identify folks in the group photos because I am unsure of
everyone's names. I did not want to "leave people out" if I didn't know their
names. It is quite a challenge to remember the names of everyone I meet,
never mind the ones I meet for the first time. For me the reunions can become
quite challenging in that way since I am often seeing many people for the
first time despite having been in contact with them either through e-mail
or letter. With so many people it is challenging to remember everyone's
names. :-)
Perhaps we can encourage folks - via this reply - to identify themselves
per photo per page so we can all put names to the faces! :-) Perhaps we
will be able to identify folks and put their names on our website. :-)
With the e-mail difficulties you have had recently, I did not know if you
had received the bulletin I sent via e-mail and posted one to you.
Hope you and your family are well! :-)
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Hi Auntie,
Very glad you received your PDF version bulletin just fine! :-) Also
glad my cousin is doing better! Please pass along my love.....
Much Affection,
Sheila
Hi Kitty,
Thanks for letting me know you were able to open the bulletin PDF! :-)
Yes, saving money for the Society is what we are after with increasing
postal prices as well as increasing prices for printing. The more Society
members like you that are able to receive the bulletin's via e-mail the
better. :-)
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Sheila--I did not receive a bulleting by e-mail. This is the e-mail address that I gave you when I joined.
Thanks!

Hi Sheila,
I received my bulletin via e-mail just fine. The pictures are nice, but I don't know who
most of them are. Is there a way to identify them, for those of us who weren't there?
I remember some of the faces from the year we attended.

Sheila,
I did not receive the bulletin by email. My email address is judicox(a)cox.net.
Thank you and Happy New Year!

I missed this year's reunion and don't know if I can make the next one due to circumstances. Are there state chapters or mini-reunions that would be more localized to me. Are there any Clough Descendants in Maryland?

Dear Sheila,
I was already able to download my bulletin--so if you want to save some $ it is alright to not post one to me.

When Joseph Ellicott began selling land in western NY for the Holland
Land Company in 1800 he started a record of settlement information.
The company representing Dutch banking had invested in the newly
formed United States and hped to sell their 3.3 million acres in
western NY in large parcels to peculators. (this land is now Niagara,
Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and most of Orleans, Genesee and Wyoming
counties.)By 1800 the land was surveyed and divided into townships,
ranges, and lots. Few people had money to purchase the land. Instead
the Company sold small parcels (100 to 200 acres )to settlers. to get
people of value there (sawmill, gristmills, blacksmiths shops and
others Ellicott coulod offer choice parcels to those with skills.
Because people had little money, Ellicott offered "Articles of
Agreement" (to set terms of sale) only a deed was issued when land was
paid in full. so many land was not recored for years or never.
The settlers could divide their land and sell pieces of it. the new
owner could continue to pay the Company.
Here is some of what I got from the Land Office Museum in Batavia NY.
The buyer may have transacted the purchase in person by mail or a
third party. He may or may not be present on the land. If there isw an
original articale but no receipt he may have given up the moved on,
never arrived, paid outright for the land and received a deed, or is
merely staying on the land and not paying.
the original lots were 360 acres of land and most settlers usually
articled 50-200 acres. ( a part of a lot or lots).
Many people misunderstant the difference between a township and a
Town in New York State. A town ship is a uinit of survey and has no
name whereas a Town is a ploitical jurisdiction possessing a name.
Sometimes a Town encompassed the same area as one surveyed township.
The township and range will give the hpysical location while the Town
is the jurisdiction in which events take place and some records are
kept.
1. Table of Original Articles.
these were the first purchasers of land. Some paid for their land
immediately and received a deed . most paid a small down payment and
received an Article of Agreement with a time limit for full payment.
2. Land that reverted back to the Company would again be available to
article (sell).
3. After the allotted time was up buyers could renew their (purchase)
for an additional time period but at a higher price.
A piece of land could pass throught many hands of time never being
completely paid for.
hope this helps anyone looking for information on western NY. Judy and MOM

Clark,
Thank you for such wonderful historical facts shared on the list about the
New York Patroon's!! This, I am sure, is a side of American history quite
unfamiliar to the general public. However, those of us into genealogy
certainly value such information highly.
Thank You,
Sheila
My great, great, great grandfather Horace Clough, son of Luther Clough and a decendent of John Clough, lived in Chautauqua County, New York in the early 1800s. He is buried near Brandt, NY. He had a brother Levi. See page 102 of the 2009 Book.
