Dear Cousins,
I appreciated this wakeup call! I finally sent Sheila my pictures and am
looking forward to the newsletter.
The new John clough Genealogy book is phenomenal, & we all owe Sheila a huge
debt of gratitude. THANK YOU SHEILA!!
I loved the reunion & meeting some old friends as well as many new friends
that are the friendliest on earth! When I walked into the room, at least 3
people popped up from their chairs to introduce themselves to me & my
husband. It was great.
I am already looking forward to the 2010 reunion!
I am hoping and trust that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Hi Dawn,
Yes, the mag is online but it seems you need to be logged in as a member to
read the latest issue. Some of the bigger book stores may carry the mag
here in the US. I can make some black and white copies for those who are
unable to find the mag. A subscription to the mag was a gift from Gwen so I
can read the articles.
Much Affection,
Sheila
Hello,
Can anyone tell me what road the "graveyard" is on that is shown on a map
in the Clough genealogy which includes Hartford and West Hebron in
Washington County in New York? It looks like the graveyard might be on
or near Jonathan's Farm. (The map was included in the 1952 version of
the genealogy in the fifth generation.)
Thank you for your help.

Dear List,
If you are interested in Welsh history, I recommend the latest issue
(October/November) of Cambria magazine (The National Magazine of Wales).
My son's paternal grandmother, Gwen Meredith, has started a series of
articles on women in Welsh history for this magazine commencing with this issue
with an article on the Princess Nest.
Gwen is a former Asst. Professor of History at the American University in
Cairo, Egypt and is currently teaching at United Arab Emirates University in
the UAE. Gwen also speaks at international conferences, usually on
various aspects of the lives of medieval women.
If you are able to pick up a copy of the magazine, feel free to e-mail me
privately (_CloughGen(a)aol.com_ (mailto:CloughGen@aol.com) ) and let me know
what you thought of the article.

Dear List,
Is there anyone who can look at the birth records for Unity, NH? We are
looking for the birth of Joel Clough Nov. 24, 1804. We want to find his
parents.
Someone has suggested that a Benjamin Clough and wife Joanna (Young) were
his parents. However, there are discrepancies between the info on this
family and the info Joel included in his book about his life.
Other ways of possibly finding the correct family for Joel is looking at
land records. Joel states in his book that he stayed with his father in
Unity until his father sold his property when Joel was about 14 year old (about
1818) and then they removed to Rochester, NY. Can anyone search these
records?
Census records may help if someone can find this family in Rochester in
1820. Joel's father did not die until after that point.
At the back of the book Joel wrote about his life and crimes is included a
letter from his brother, Wesley Clough. In part it states: "It seems that
you did not think any thing about your friends' feelings, and especially
your mother. Mother is in Rochester - how she will feel, you must judge. I
expect she will live with me."
There is also a letter at the back of the book from his "brother" Henry W.
Bates. I am assuming this was a brother-in-law.
Perhaps someone can search the 1840 census records for Rochester and
surrounding towns looking for Wesley Clough. His mother may be listed as living
with him.
According to a book listing some of the crimes in the US, a witness
(Charles L. Bartlett) for the defense in the trial of Joel Clough for the murder
of Mrs. Mary Hamilton stated that he had known Joel as a child in Unity,
NH. "He had heard that his brother Benjamin was at times deranged - and Miss
Allen, a cousin of his, was, for a long time deranged, or as people said
there, bewitched."
Please let us know if you are able to solve this mystery. Thanks for your
help! :-)

Dear LaRayne,
Great to hear from you! :-) Glad you are enjoying the new books! :-)
It is thanks to the efforts of family members like you that the books
have as complete information as they do.
Please do me a favor. Photocopy the pages in the new book set where there
need to be corrections, additions, etc., write in the corrections,
additions, etc. on the photocopied sheets, and then send them to me via US mail.
This will allow me to create an ongoing errata in our JCGS bulletins for
the meantime.
It was GREAT to meet some members of your extended family at our reunion
this year! :-) I haven't seen you and Waldo since our 2001 Great Britain
trip so it would be great if you two were able to join us at a JCGS
reunion soon.
Please give my best to Waldo and keep in touch! :-)
Much Affection,
Sheila
Dear Sheila, ATTENTION THIS IS NEW
It seems like sometimes my e-mails don't go through when I just use the
address, so I'm going to try it this way. I got the Clough books a couple of
weeks ago. I haven't had much time to study them but I can see what a super
work you did with them. MANY THANKS for the thousands of hours that you
spent doing this. It will be a real treasure! I am very excited to see them!
I really wanted to go to the reunion but it just wasn't an option right now.
However, I have enjoyed reading different cousins' coments about it.
I have a new "grand" nephew. I guess that you want to keep getting
additional information. If you do not, please tell me.
He is the son of Tanya Leigh Whetten &
Coy Hugh Johnston III
Name: Jaxyn Leigh Johnston
Birth: 3 September 2009
Place: Gilbert, Maricopa, Arizona
I guess you didn't get my corrections for the twins of Joshua Aaron
Hatch and Jennie Kaye Young. They are Aaron Troy Hatch &
Anson Trey
Hatch. Their birth dates are right, but they were born in Mesa, Maricopa,
Arizona, not in El Paso, El Paso, Texas. This is just for your records.
Wishing you the best.
Love, LaRayne Call

Check out this web site, which has "The only true and authentic confession
of Joel Clough," who killed Mary Hamilton and met his end on the gallows
on July 26, 1833. His ghost is said to haunt the Burlington County (N.J.)
jail.

In his confession, which was printed and sold in NYC, Joel Clough says he
was born in Unity, Chesire, NH on November 24, 1804. He had four brothers
and two sisters. His family moved to Rochester, NY when Joel was 14.
I can't find him in the new Clough book. Has he been written out of the
family? His book is an interesting read.
