Thanks for the interesting story Sheila! I've been teaching about Prince
Madog (I've seen it spelled Madoc) for several years. Smithsonian magazine
did an article about those who "might" have discovered the Americas before
Columbus and Prince Madog was included.

Hi Sheila,
Thank you for this very interesting email. I never heard the story of Madog coming to this country! My husband is desc. from Madog by Robert Owen and his wife Jane Vaughan. I have been researching this interesting couple. I would love to take the tour but with health proplems don't think it will be possible as they usually like to book several months in advance - wish the tour were next year!

Prince Madog was an illegitimate son of Owain Gwynedd, Prince of Wales.
When Owain died there was much quarreling and fighting amongst Owain's
legitimate sons about who would lead. Madog and his brother, Riryd, wanted nothing to
do with the none sense they were surrounded by.
Madog had Viking ancestry through his maternal line and sailing was second
nature to him and several members of his family. So, in 1170 Madog and Riryd
left from Rhos-on-Sea, Wales with fellow Welsh folks and two ships and headed
off into the vast ocean to the west.
There is much evidence to support what the legend goes on to tell us.
Madog, his brother, and fellow Welsh landed near current Mobile Bay, Alabama where
they intermingled with the native people. At some point Madog returned to
Wales with news of his adventures. Other Welsh who were sick of the in
fighting by the Welsh nobles joined Madog. They sailed from Lundy Island and were
not heard from again.
It seems, from the evidence found in the southern states, that Madog
certainly made it back to the Mobile Bay area with his ship of additional travelers
and supplies.
During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I her advisors "advised" her to use the
common knowledge of Madog and his "discovery" as proof that the Welsh/British
were the first to "discover" America - to supercede the Spanish claim built
on the "discovery" of Columbus. This was certainly dear to Queen Elizabeth
since she was the last Tudor (Welsh) monarch.
Our distant cousin, Richard Williams-Ellis, created the Prince Madog Quest
Society. I invite you all to take a look at my web site -

$2,200 - $3,200.
Please keep in mind that having Richard Williams-Ellis guide this tour will
be a worth while experience! Although he was educated at Eton and Oxford,
Richard grew up in Gwynedd, Wales and maintained a home there even when his
work took him to London and New York. Also, Richard is a direct male line
descendant of Owain Gwynedd!!

Dear List,
Several years ago we found a genetic link between the descendants of our
John Clough of Salisbury, MA and the descendants of Sir Richard Clough of 1500's
Denbigh, Wales. One of our many current distant Clough descendant cousins
in Wales, Richard Williams-Ellis, introduced me and Rebecca Harpole to the
legend of Prince Madog (ma-dug with the emphasis on ma).
Society. I invite you all to take a look at my web site -
_www.British-Ancestor-Travel.com_ (http://www.British-Ancestor-Travel.com) . Besides perusing
the many interesting pages, I also invite you to click on the words "Prince
Madog Tour" found on the first page. You will read all about the trip we have
been putting together for October of this year. On that page, if you click on
the words "Prince Madog Quest Society" you will be brought to a page
describing the society.
Any and all from this list who are interested in joining us on this "Once In
A Lifetime" tour should contact me at _TouringBritain(a)aol.com_

$2,200 - $3,200.
Please keep in mind that having Richard Williams-Ellis guide this tour will
be a worth while experience! Although he was educated at Eton and Oxford,
Richard grew up in Gwynedd, Wales and maintained a home there even when his
work took him to London and New York. Also, Richard is a direct male line
descendant of Owain Gwynedd!!

Dear List,
My Clough database has reached a milestone of over 60,000 individuals!
Many thanks to the many, many family members who have assisted, and keep
assisting, in bringing our Clough family information as up to date and correct
as possible!
It is thanks to family members sending in not only their Clough ancestry
information but also the ancestry information of as many of their ancestors as
they can that I am able to make some amazing connections for folks.
Work on our new book is continuing. If there are folks on this list who are
not yet familiar with the work I am currently doing in creating an updated
and corrected volume on the descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, MA,
please contact me at _CloughGen(a)aol.com_ (mailto:CloughGen@aol.com) .
If there are folks on this list who have ancestry back to our John Clough of
Salisbury, MA and are not yet members of the John Clough Genealogical
Society, I encourage you to contact our Treasurer, John R. Clough, at
_seapop-1(a)comcast.net_ (mailto:seapop-1@comcast.net) .
