Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I finally found my Joseph Clough/Chloe/Cloe of Clark County Illinois in?the 1840 census listed as Cloa. He is between 20 and 30 making him born 1810 to 1820, with another male living with him of the same age.?
One son under five?
Two daughters under five?
One female 20 to 30.???

>From "Albion's Seed," by David Hackett Fischer, a study of Puritan New England, p. 194.
"For less serious offenses, the punishment was whipping, unless one could pay a fine. These punishments were sometimes very severe. Four Quaker women were ordered to be stripped to the waist, tied to a cart's tail, and conveyed from "constable to constable" through twelve New England towns, and to be whipped in every town. The women were flogged so terribly that blood coursed down their naked backs and breasts, until the horrified townsmen of Salisbury rose against the constables and rescued them."
Hi Clark,
You hit the nail right on the head! :-) The "Great Migration" started in
1630. Watertown did not become a town until September 1630 and actually
included present day Weston, Waltham, and large sections of Lincoln, Belmont, and
Cambridge.
Hi Bob,
I came across the Elizabeth Clough married to John Wiley while entering
information from a family member out west who descends from David Cluff and
Elizabeth Hall. I am not so sure on the authenticity of the information and the
family member was going to do some additional searching. From what I can
tell, the info came from LDS records. As wonderful as LDS records can be, they
are prone to typographical errors.
In all of the Salisbury research we have done (either by Clough Board
members before me or my own) we have never come across a death record for a John
Clough for 1642.
There was, however, a whole other Clough family in Boston at the time of our
John and Jane Clough. Watertown being a suburb of Boston, I would venture a
guess that the Watertown Clough's were of this other Clough family. In
fact, I was just having an e-mail exchange with someone who has researched the
Boston Clough family. Ebenezer Clough built a home in Boston and he,
apparently, was from this other Clough family.
It doesn't seem as though the Boston Clough family were as prolific as ours.
Their descendant numbers certainly are not like ours. However, as I was
"telling" this individual with whom I was having the e-mail exchanges with, I
have often wondered of any genetic connection between the two families.
As for the contradictory info regarding the possible parentage of our John
Clough, I think what we have is a lot of speculation by family members who have
heard bits and pieces of information, have put together their own
hypothesis, and have submitted the information as though it was fact (thus my
"warnings" against accepting Internet info as fact). I come across this a lot in
reference to our connection to Sir Richard Clough. A lot of folks still tell
their family members that we are descended from Sir Richard Clough. As far as
we know, we are NOT descended from him. What we know is that we share a
genetic connection that has not been found via traditional genealogical research.
The descendant info for Sir Richard Clough is very well documented.
However, folks still like to make the jump.
My contact at the College of Arms will be doing some research for us soon.
Let's hope he can find some answers for us. In the meantime, we would do
well to take certain Internet info with a grain of salt.
Best Wishes,
Sheila

In 1625 no English settlers were born in Watertown, MA or anywhere else in MA except the Plymouth colony. The Great Migration of Puritans from East Anglia to Boston and the Massachusetts Bay didn't begin until 1630.

My questions, however, are, Who is Elizabeth Clough who married John Wiley? Everything I've seen about her lists her date of birth as 1625. Some say she was born in England, not Watertown, which I would take to be the case. Also, is there a John Clough who was born in 1590 and, if so, what was his connection to our John Clough? Have you, Sheila, or anyone else worked on this?

The John Clough Genealogical Society has receieved sveral Volumes of
information regarding the Clough's of Blue Hills Maine. During the break
between semesters, I hope to get the information scanned into a digital
format. The Board of Governors, in conjuction with the Librarians will
then be able to make that information available to the membership.
Sorry that I can't provide more detailed information, but I have yet to
examine it in any meaningful way.

Hi Jo,
In my database I have 118 Wood's, 5 of whom where married to Clough's.
For
example: Mary Jane Wood married Leonard Clough. They were born,
married in,
and lived in Blue Hill, ME.
The book may be quite useful to us. Let us know if you would like to

Hi Jo,
Yes, finding the connection is certainly our goal. One thing to keep in
mind is that when Cromwell was in power he had an awful lot of records
destroyed. This may be the reason we haven't found the connection thus far.
As for Sir Richard Clough not usually using his title because of Queen
Elizabeth I's dislike of foreign titles: Sir Richard Clough married a second
cousin and charge of the Queen, Katherine Tudor of Berain.
It is all very fascinating! :-)

I, too, had the privilege of visiting Plas Clough and Bach-y-Craig in 1993.
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the inside of either, but they were both
impressive and, as you said, awesome to see a home that's 450 years old and
built by one of our ancestors.

Jo,
Yes, that is the Sir Richard Clough to whom we have found a genetic
connection via Y chromosome DNA analysis. We are NOT descended from Sir
Richard
Clough but we MIGHT be descended from one of his brother's or paternal
uncles.
If you look to the right of the article, it mentions the JCGS. I think
that
link has since been disabled. Too bad, really. They had a nice article on
my 2003 group and even had photos of us that I sent to them.
On the last page of that article you will see a photo of Plas Clough. The
previous owner has now moved up the road and has "given" the estate to her
son. The home is NOT open to the public but I have had the amazing
privilege of
visiting the house on a couple of occasions. It is amazing enough to be in
a home that was built nearly 450 years ago. But, to be in a home of such a
prominent man to whom we have found a genetic Clough connection goes beyond
words.
Enjoy the article! :-)

Dear List,
Is there anyone on the list who currently lives in Maine and might know
where the Shadrach Clough house is in Arundel?
For anyone who has our book, "The Story of the Family of John Clough of
Salisbury, Massachusetts," the photo of the house is opposite page 168 and the
info on Shadrach starts on page 175.
Some of the clues as to the houses position include:
"Situated far back from the present highway to Biddeford from Kennebunkport,
the natural tangles of bushes and trees almost conceal this house."
"The house is approximately three miles from Goose Rocks beach, and low
marsh land extends from it to the seashore."
Please let me know if anyone can solve the mystery of the house's exact
whereabouts. I am in contact with someone who wishes to know.

Dear List,
As a refresher - through DNA analysis we found that we are genetically
connected to the family of Sir Richard Clough (abt. 1530-1570) of Denbigh, Wales.
We are NOT descended from him but have a genetic connection that we have yet
to prove via traditional genealogical research.
A descendant of Sir Richard Clough, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, built
Portmeirion in north Wales. Here is an interesting article on Portmeirion that you
