Hi, Alan.
I do not have access currently to Vol. 1 of the Clough book. What are the similarities that you have found? I have thought about getting a book but since Vol 3 is being put together I thought I'd wait to get it. Any help you can offer is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Donna

Genealogy of Desc. of John Clough, vol 1, 1952, at page 466, #1924,
gives a Frederick Clough (Enoch, Thomas, Samual-4-3-2, John) that has
many similarities to the Frederick you describe. But also some
discrepancies. Do you have access to that book ?

Hi Phyllis,
How wonderful that you are already making plans to attend our 2009 JCGS
annual reunion! :-)
The Sept. 26, 2009 date has been settled upon with the Board and that is the
date I have reserved our space for. We set the date long in advance so that
we might secure folks like you who will put that date on their calendar's
and plan to attend. Next year's reunion has all the earmarks of a great
gathering! We look forward to more family members making the commitment to attend
as well!
I am really looking forward to seeing you and the additional family members
that come to next year's reunion!
Thanks for making your plans this far in advance!
Best Wishes,
Sheila

Hi Sheila,
It is a long shot that I will be able to attend, but where is the location of the reunion?
BTW, I have done some research on the Sonja Gettner side of the family and have some contacts for you. I will send the info along soon (photocopies) and with how I think these folks are connected to us. I may have the correct links multigenerationaly or maybe not. However, take a peek and decide if you want to pursue it.
Love,
Lori

That's pretty much in sync with what I've seen in Vol_I_The Genealogy of
the descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, Massachusetts.
I'm in touch with the archivist/historian of the First Parish in
Kennebunk, which is probably where Betsey and John were married.
Hopefully if he finds the record of their marriage it will also have the
names of the parents of bride and groom.

Hi Sheila,
My traveling companion and I would like to attend next years reunion. We
hope to come to Boston by train and need to make our reservations in about
three weeks to get the best price. How firm do you think the September 26th
date is?
Phyllis Willoughby
I am looking for additional information on my gggrandfather, Frederick Charles or Charles Frederick Clough. We were told he came from England with a young son named George H. He had a club foot and was unable to serve in the Civil War. He had a shoe shop in Biddeford ME and later married Almira Blake. The research I have done found a Frederick Charles who married an Almira Blake Sanborne. They both along with Almira's second husband, John Knights, are all buried in the Sanborne Cemetary in Waterboro, ME. What I am trying to find are the other relatives of Frederick Charles Clough especially through his son, George. There are several discrepancies in what our written family history is compared to what has been unveiled here in the US. We know my gggrandfather was also killed by a train around 1861. My ggrandfather was Waynal Greenleaf Clough. His name is not recorded in US Census. I believe this may be the WM. G. Clough that is
recorded. If anyone has ANY information on this line of Clough please contact me. I would love to correct any and all information on our line from England...or fill in any discrepancies. Thanks. Donna Clough
Ken,
A boook by Charles Bradbury, History of Kennebunk Port 1602-1837 lists Samuel Clough/Cluff, but does not list Betsey as a child.
It reads" Cluff, or Cough, Samuel, came from Kittery about 1758. His wife Hannah Hutchins. His Children were Joseph, m. Elivira Hutchins; Thoms, Hannah Goodwin; Samuel, Lucy Wakefield; Enoch, died at see; Noah, m. Mary Goodwin; Joel, Dorothy Hutchins; Rohada, Paul March; Martha, Thomas Huff; Lydia, Silas Abbot."

Subject: [CLOUGH-GENEALOGY] Betsey (Cluff) Brown_Samuel Clough_Hannah Hutchins
My Clough/Cluff ancestor, Betsey, was 88 YOA in 1850 (US Census) and
that places her birth circa 1762. She and my ggggrandfather, John Brown,
were married (or perhaps intentions posted) 5 Feb1790 in Wells, Maine or
April 1 of 1791.
In "Vital records of Wells Maine" Betsey is listed as being from
Arundel. In reviewing the PDF record of my gggfather's Revolutionary War
pension Betsey's name is spelled CLUFF but the handwriting is not hers
as she signed with "her mark" a letter X. In this latter document their
marriage date is stated to be April 1, 1791. I'm "guessing" that the
intentions were filed in February, the wedding was in April, and the one
year discrepancy is related to a dating quirk that I've often seen on
older records which list two consecutive years as the dob, dom, etc.
I 'suspect' that Betsey's parents were Samuel (4) Clough and Hannah
Hutchins but have no proof. Vol I of The Genealogy of the descendants of
John Clough of Salisbury. MA lists nine children born between 1743 and
1760 to this couple. A tenth child "Martha" is last on the list with no
year of birth and a notation that Bradbury says that she was married to
Thomas Huff.
The aforementioned Revolutionary War Pension papers include another
affidavit by John Brown (son of John and Betsey) that states he was 61
years of age in 1848 the year in which he appeared and filed a statement
supporting his mother's application for pension funds. If that is so he
would have been born in 1787 three or four years BEFORE John and Betsey
were married.
All of this is just now coming together because I got started squinting
at the pdf file with those handwritten statements about ggggrandpa
Brown. I now wonder if Betsey Cluff/Clough is lost in the Clough records
because she had become a "black sheep" in the family?? I must get on the
road soon to make an inquiry of the First Congregational Church and
visit Wells town Hall to see if I can find out anything else.

Dear List,
I was able to stop in Strafford, VT last week during my family pilgrimage
with my aunt, Chris Scott. They copied all of the Clough related records they
have for me. Unfortunately, they do not have any of the children being
ascribed to both Winthrop's listed as having been born in Strafford:

Therefore, I am still unable to determine which Winthrop and wife gave life

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your replies.
The info you found Online seems to match the info Alan has referred to in our books. This is helpful. However, I still need to find the vital stats on the 1793 Winthrop and a listing of their children against a listing of the children of the 1769 Winthrop and Susanna Chase. Either woman, by the looks of things, could have given birth to the children who have been attributed to both of them.
I really need access to the records in Strafford, VT. This might solve the issue at hand if the birth records for the children list the mother's maiden name and/or age at the time the children were born.
If the children's birth record's do not help, maybe the 1820 and 1830 census records may assist - if they have the correct ages for Winthrop and Susan/Susanna.
Does anyone have access to those?
Many Thanks,
Sheila

Hi Alan,
Thanks for your reply. Yes, the older Winthrop was father to a Winthrop and Josiah. He was also the father of an Andrew to whom some attribute a Winthrop.
Thank you for pointing out the death date for Susanna Chase in our book. I will take a look. If Susanna Chase was the older Winthrop's wife, then he was about 20 years older than her.
What is interesting is that info from another source gives the wife of the 1793 Winthrop the name of Susan Bryant who was born Abt. 1789 and died 1835 - just like the Susanna Chase you mentioned as being in our Clough book.
I am familiar with the Strafford, VT cemetery. I was there many years ago with my aunt and certainly received a good work out getting to it. :-) Unfortunately, I don't think we have time to visit that particular cemetery this trip - although doing so may assist in clearing up at least part of this mystery.
As to your question regarding the death places listed for the two Winthrop's - the younger one is listed as having died in Ohio. There is no info for the older one.
Many Thanks,
Sheila

Sheila,
Fully aware of the pitfalls of relying on info posted on line, I nevertheless noticed on Rootsweb a Susanna Chase (b. 1787) listed as the wife of Winthrop Clough (dob 17 May 1769).

Dear List,
I have come across a snag and need assistance in ironing it out PLEASE.
I have two Winthrop Clough's:
* Winthrop Clough b. May 17, 1769 in Weare, NH
* Winthrop Clough b. July 25, 1793 in Weare, NH
The problem is this:
* Different family members are attributing the SAME children to both
Winthrop's!
* The wife of 1769 Winthrop is listed as Susanna Chase
* The wife of 1793 Winthrop is listed as Susan Bryant
The duplicate children for the two different Winthrop's are:

I don't know if this will add anything to the discussion but you might look
at http://books.google.com . Type in "Winthrop Clough" [in quotes]. You
might want to look at "All books" to give you further leads but for now
change to "Full view only." There are at least a couple of books that might
help.

Subject: [CLOUGH-GENEALOGY] Winthrop Clough...Which is which?
>
>
> * Josiah Clough b. June 12, 1818
> * Mary Clough b. 1820
> * Allen Clough b. 1822
