As you can see, I have the same book (in a PDF file). Since I have no
doubt that John Brown of Wells and Betsy Clough of Arundel were either
married or announced "intentions" Feb 1790, and that Betsy Brown shows
up in the Federal Census of 1850 at age 88, it would appear that her
birth was in 1762. (1762 + 88=1850) The line in this book that
tantalizes me is:
> In 1756, they built a new home by Cape Porpoise, and soon after Enoch was born followed by John and Joel, and another daughter.
In the other Clough Genealogy book: The Genealogy of the descendants of
John Clough of Salisbury, Massachusetts page 131 has this listing of
children:
Based on a comparison of the two genealogies there seems to be some
doubt about the order of birth of the three sons born in Arundel as well
as the identity of the 'other daughter'. The first leaves her unnamed
and the second indicates "Martha" but without a date. Since my existing
records indicate Betsy to have been born in 1762, that would fit nicely
with the unnamed daughter, and it's even possible that "Martha" and
Betsy were sisters. What I'm looking for is something that would
conclusively link Betsy to the lineage of John of Salisbury.
The marriage reference that I have came from a transcribed version of
the vital records of Wells, ME that I found online at the NEHGS website
a few years ago. I also saw what purported to be a microfilm of the same
record but it was of such poor quality that I had difficulty deciphering
it. Since in 1790 Wells, ME included what today is Kennebunk and
Kennebunkport as well as Wells, it would seem a good place to look for a
conclusive record. I live close enough to Maine that I would happily
make a trip to photograph any records that might be called to my
attention. (Not only that, I could stop for a meal at the Maine Diner
:-P )
Well, that missive took a while to put together. Here's hoping I'm onto
something.

Thanks so much for your prompt answer. Someone must know of her. She
is a great gal. Her maiden name was Milliken -- married a Charles Day.
Perhaps someone knows of her.
Thanks again!

I haven't looked at my Clough stuff recently as there have been so many
other things going on in our lives. However, I'll take a look and see if I
have any references to any of the Clough's you mention. Did you happen to
go to the reunion this July? We weren't able to go and haven't been in

There is some discrepancy about the dates of the marriage/intentions
although if "intentions" is sort of like engagement, perhaps that would
explain the 14 month gap.
Based on her age Betsy would seem likely to be a daughter of Samuel and
Hannah Hutchins, sibling of Noah Cluff/Clough and Joel Cluff. On page
123 of "The Story of the Family of John Clough of Salisbury,
Massachusetts" marriage of Samuel Clough and Hannah Hutchins is
mentioned 4/12/1756 then mentions birth of sons Enoch, "followed by John
and Joel, /as well as another daughter/". Betsy Cluff/Clough Brown was
born in 1762 based on her age of 88 cited in the 1850 US Census.
I plan to write to the church mentioned in the citation above to see if
the records mentioned in Betsy's deposition are still extant. Likewise I
will try (again) to contact the Town of Wells to see what records they
may have.
Anyone else that can connect my Betsy to the family of Samuel and Hannah
please let me know.
