Dear Listers,
This is a reminder that the deadline for sending in your reservations for
our upcoming annual reunion of the John Clough Genealogical Society is quickly
approaching. The reservation form can be found in the special bulletin that
was sent out in May. Please send in your reservation forms. We are looking
forward to a large turnout and have been encouraging Clough's from all over
the United States to join us on Saturday, July 28, 2007 in Wethersfield, CT.
Several of my first cousins will be attending for the very first time and it
would be wonderful for them to see how important these reunions are to JCGS
members by seeing a large crowd of us in attendance.
Please come and support the enormous effort that has been put forth in
planning this event! :-)
If you have any questions, please contact me at _CloughGen(a)aol.com_

A friend in Maine just wrote to say that...
"in going through some old Bridgton Academy yearbooks and "catalogue
1923-1924 this morning I came across the following:
"Portland Alumni Association . . . First Vice President - Mr. B. C. Clough"
Bridgton Academy is about 40 miles west northwest of Portland, Maine. Does
anyone have any idea who this Mr. B.C. Clough might be?

I am looking for info on Abner Clough born to MAYBE Ralph, Seth, John, of Timothy Clough and Mary Wasburn or Timothy and Susan Orcutt. in that family line.. Belchertown Mass area. and towns surrounding the area. not much info to go on sorry about that. thanks Judy and Mom. ps... does anyone know of a Richard Clough comming to U.S. 1630 on the fleet Winthrop , Arabell ship, landing in Watertown then going to Salem and Boston?? he sailed from the Isle of Man , I think or the other Isle of ..... that I can't think of off England.
I received an email message from the Historical Society of Lovell, Maine , which is next to Sweden.
"...A cursory look at Dr. Clifford Pike's "Story of Sweden" caused another Lovell Historical Society volunteer (she's also its President) to unearth in Volume 3 dealing with Town Records that a John Clough had his name added to the list of taxpayers in Sweden in the following years: 1838, 1845, 1850, and 1852. Whether he was zipping into and out of Sweden during this period or simply acquiring more land over time, I am not sure..."
I'm not sure which John Clough this might be. It's not John Clough 5, son of John 4 and Tabitha Welch, who was born in 1836. It might be John Clough 4 himself, who is my 4th g-grandfather. John 4 was born in 1708 in Poplin, NH. He married 2 to Abigail Kimball in 1750 in New Hampshire. Their son Samuel, born 1752 in Brentwood, NH, my 3rd g-grandfather, moved to Maine, where he married a Quaker, Sarah Estes, abt. 1770 and started a line of Maine Quaker Cloughs. Will write to the Sweden Historical Society to see if they can provide more info. Sweden is near New Hampshire.

I posted this query a while back but am still searching for my
gggmother, Betsy's parents, and expect when I find them will find my
link all the way back to John Clough of Salisbury. Betsy was married the
John Brown of Wells, now Kennebunk, ME. She was from Arundel (now
Kennebunkport).
Here are some pertinent details from my FTM notes:
> marriage intention of John Brown and Betsy Clough filed 5 Feb 1790
> Wells, Maine (vital records...birth, marriage, death Wells, ME online
> at NEHGS) These online records are a transcription, not original. I've
> seen what purports to be an original elsewhere but the writing was
> illegible.
>
> DOB and DOD based on Betsy Brown who appears in 1850 Kennebunk Federal
> census aged 88.
>
> In a deposition of the Clerk of First Congregational Parish of
> Kennebunk in John Brown's Revolutionary War Pension records Betsey
> (Cluff) Brown states that they were married April 1st 1791.
There is some discrepancy about the dates of the marriage/intentions
although if "intentions" is sort of like engagement, perhaps that would
explain the 14 month gap.
Based on her age Betsy would seem likely to be a daughter of Samuel and
Hannah Hutchins, sibling of Noah Cluff/Clough and Joel Cluff. On page
123 of "The Story of the Family of John Clough of Salisbury,
Massachusetts" marriage of Samuel Clough and Hannah Hutchins is
mentioned 4/12/1756 then mentions birth of sons Enoch, "followed by John
and Joel, /as well as another daughter/". Betsy Cluff/Clough Brown was
born in 1762 based on her age of 88 cited in the 1850 US Census.
I plan to write to the church mentioned in the citation above to see if
the records mentioned in Betsy's deposition are still extant. Likewise I
will try (again) to contact the Town of Wells to see what records they
may have.
Anyone else that can connect my Betsy to the family of Samuel and Hannah
please let me know.
