I am researching William Sweet who married Hannah Clough as he is my 4th G Grandfather . I noticed that Tammie Clough has posted that Ithamer and Bette Clough migrated in
1787 to Hartford, New York
. Does anyone know for a fact that 1787 is correct because I have been unable to find Ithamer ot William Sweet in the Federal Census for 1790 but I have found them in 1800. Would anyone know anything about this data?
Jerry
Does anyone know Tammie Email address ?
Dear Listers,
On page 226 of our "The Story of the Family of John Clough of Salisbury,
Massachusetts" book you will see a photo of Beatrice (Babs) Clough Wright and
two of her children. Beatrice was a descendant of our John Clough who was born
in New Haven, CT in 1910. In her teen years she attended private schools,
including one very familiar to me in Simsbury, CT. She then went overseas and
continued her education at Cambridge and Oxford Universities.
While at Oxford Babs met her first husband, John R. Rathbone, with whom she
had John (aka Tim) and Pauline. These are the children seen in the photo in
our book. John Rathbone was a member of the English Parliament from Cornwall
but was tragically killed in action in WWII. Following his death Babs was
unanimously elected by that district to fill her late husband's post as a
National Conservative representative. An American woman serving in Parliament!
Babs later married Capt. Paul Wright who went on to become a British
diplomat, thus later known as Sir Paul Wright. Babs and Paul had a daughter, Faith,
while Babs was still serving in Parliament. This made British history as
Mrs. Wright became the first woman in the history of the House of Commons to
become a mother while a member of Parliament.
Those who accompanied me on the Second Clough Family Trip to Great Britain
in Sept. 2003 met Sir Paul Wright and his daughter, Faith, at his home in
London. Babs had passed away only months before our meeting. However, one of
her many remarkable accomplishments was the founding of "Hearing Dogs for Deaf
People" 25 years ago. Please feel free to look them up at
_www.hearingdogs.org.uk_ (http://www.hearingdogs.org.uk) .
In support of his grandmother's organization, Faith's son, Ben Shuckburgh
and his two brothers-in-law will be competing in the Welsh 2 Day Enduro
motorcycle race on June 21, 2007 in aid of "Hearing Dogs for Deaf People." Feel
free to look at that web site at _www.justgiving.com/dirtydogs_
(http://www.justgiving.com/dirtydogs) .
How wonderful that so many of our John Clough descendants continue to make
such positive impacts on the lives of so many!
Best Wishes,
Sheila Andersen
