Dear Listers,
For those of us researching our New England roots this bit of information
may be interesting...
On May 19, 1780 a darkness fell over New England. The length of time this
darkness lasted depended on the location of those observing it but was said to
have lasted from about 10am until about 1am the next day. This darkness was
so severe that candles had to be lit during the day and chickens went to
roost.
The Connecticut legislature was in session at the time. Many of those
present were so disturbed by the darkness they thought it was God's judgement and
wished to adjourn. However, a member of the legislature, Abraham Davenport,
said the following, "I choose, for one, to meet Him face to face, no
faithless servant frightened from my task, but ready when the Lord of the harvest
calls; and therefore, with all reverence, I would say, let God do His work, we
will see to ours. Bring in the candles."
There was no eclipse on that day. It is thought the extreme darkness was
the result of severe forest fires to the west of New England.
If any of you have family remembrances (such as diaries, etc.) of that day,
please feel free to post them to this list.
Best Wishes,
Sheila Andersen

She has listed a lot of info for the Obadiah Clough in Canterbury that you are looking for!!
Good luck with your research.

Gloria,
Yes I did recieve it. Thank you very much. From what I know I am not related to any Cloughs in the Brown County area. That how ever does not mean that much as my family is not very interested in family history besides my sister and I. I only remember one family reunion as a child. I would be interested to find out though. I very curious as to our orgins, I do remember some time in probally elementry school doing a family history, what I was able to get was that my family originated in Wales, and I do recall something of The Templar Knights being told to me. But as how I am not sure. I got interested in geneology as my step fathers family is very historiaonic and can trace their roots very far back, matter of fact my step-father and mother make regular trips to the Ireland and England and have always found more on these trips. Where I am stuck now is at Obadiah, and possibly a connection to a John Clough who either moved to Utah or some of his direct decendents did at
sometime, somewhere this line changed their name to Cluff. As for my direct line I have been told I am the last namesake or I should say was. My wife Rita and I just welcomed a son Gavyn Ronald Clough into the world on August 16, 2006. I have heard my best bet may be to contact the mormons or to head over the pond. Although a trip may be in the future, I can't see it happening anytime soon. Thank you again and let me know if there may be more.

Susan,
Sorry if I have been pelting you with emails on the same subject. It's just
desperation. I don't know a single male Clough but will keeps my eyes open
and will let you know if I find a willing subject. Thanks for the reply.

Mary, Just found your email buried among all the junk newsletters. We were
traveling for 5 weeks over the holidays and I am just now looking at my mail.
I think I sent you my VA Cloughs Outline, which is all I have about your line.
I can't get any of the George or Richard Cloughs who were in Virginia back to
England. We need to find a male named Clough who is descended from those
two/that line/your line who can take the DNA test, and then we might make some
progress. I have never done any research on Cloughs in England because I could
never trace my line back to when they came over (Geo. Clough born 1820 in VA
is as far back as i can go with my line). The Cloughs in Mass. have their line
back to Richard Clough in Wales, but they are 5 DNA markers off from me. Do
you know any male Cloughs who are related to your Clough line??
Just have so many things going on I've not had time to think about genealogy.
Let me know at my msn address above whether I sent you the Clough Outline
for Virginia. I do want to get back to this as soon as I finish a manuscript I
am working on, getting it published. Must run. Best, Susan Clough Wyatt
Hello All,
I am currently looking into my ancestry but have found quite a few road blocks. I am now finally getting somewhere thanks to the awesome people I have met here. I am currently stopped at an Obadiah Clough b. March 08, 1807 in Canterbury NH., and died May 18, 1895 in Oak Grove, WI. He had married a Dorothy Morrison in 1832 from Canaan, VT. b. April 27, 1812 and d.September 21, 1895. I am very new to the geniology thing and this list has been great. Thank you all for your help.

Dear Susan,
I am afraid you got "buried"; so sorry. Perhaps we will be able to help one
another as VA is where I'm looking, too.
My line goes back from Elizabeth Clough who married Robert Anderson III. She
was born 1722 in Hanover Co. Her parents were Richard Clough (1677-1751) and
Anne Poindexter b. 1677. Richard's parents were Capt. George Clough d. 1711
and Elizabeth ______. That is all I have. I know Ann Poindexter's family
came from the island of Jersey, but have not gotten George back to
(probably) Wales. Can you help?

Dear Ken,
Thanks for your query. I've taken a look into my Clough database of over
52,200 individuals and am having trouble finding your Betsey Clough. I
followed the line you mentioned regarding John, Thomas, Samuel and did not find a
daughter of Samuel listed as Betsey or Elizabeth.
What I would suggest is that you find the marriage record (intention filed 5
Feb 1790 in Wells, ME) and see if it lists the parents of the bride and
groom. Also, look at the birth records for Wells, ME (if you think they stayed
there after their marriage) to see if there are any records of their children
being born there.
You mention the 1850 census showing Betsey Brown age 88. What town was this
in? Was John listed as well? Look at that census again and see who lived
on nearby farms/properties. Also look at earlier census records for the same
information. Very often family members lived in close proximity.
You may also wish to look at land transactions involving John Brown to see
who witnessed the transactions. Very often family members and/or close
friends were the witnesses.
I also suggest that you obtain your own copy of "The Story of the Family of
John Clough of Salisbury, MA" as well as our Vol. I of "Genealogy of
Descendants of John Clough of Salisbury, MA" (Vol. II is sold out) from the John
Clough Genealogical Society instead of looking at an E-bay CD copy. If you wish
to do this I will be happy to assist you in this. Please e-mail me privately.
Please let us know who the E-bay seller is so that we may contact them. We
have not given permission for anyone to sell our books.
Please let me know what you find with the suggestions above. I may have
more suggestions based on what you find.
Looking forward to hearing back from you.

Ah, now I understand your query.
From Google Books I just downloaded the entire publication (567
pages...two re: Cloughs) and printed the pages, but the right edge of
one is truncated. Another view has whole page but is hard to read.
Here's my best effort to transcribe the appropriate portion .
"(IV) Samuel Clough, son of Thomas Clough (3), was born about 1708 at
Salisbury or vicinity. He removed thence to the adjacent town of
Kittery, now in Main, and married, February 14, 1736/37, Hannah
Hutchins, of one of the old families of that section. Two of their sons
were soldiers in the revolution. Children of Samuel and Hannah Clough:
1. Joseph, born at Kittery, February 21, 1742-3; was a revolutionary
soldier; married Elvira Hutchins, and after the war removed to Hollis,
New Hampshire. 2. Thomas, married Hannah Goodnow. 3. Samuel, married
Lucy Wakefield. 4. Enoch, a soldier in the revolution; died at sea. 5.
Noah, mentioned below. 6. Joel, married Dorothy Hutchins. 7. Rhoda, born
at Kittery, May 2, 1745; married Paul March. 8. Martha, married Thomas
Huff. 9. Lydia, married Silas Abbot"
FamilySearch.org lists ten children, still no Betsey or Elizabeth,
although Samuel apparently had a sister named Elizabeth but she was born
way to early (1728) to be the Elizabeth/Betsey I'm looking for. The ten
children at FamilySearch.org are:
Samuel, Thomas, Noah, Lydia, John, Enoch, Joel, Marth, Joseph, and
Rhoda. This list shows Martha born in 1762, the correct year for my
Elizabeth/Betsey but the other source shows her marrying Thomas Huff.
Well that's something to try to track down anyway :-) Also, Noah's
Revolutionary war record shows his name as both Cluff and Clough. I
haven't been putting much effort into the Cluff spelling; maybe I should
if Noah is Betsey's brother, could be that some of that generation went
with the phonetic spelling. Noah's 'signature' on one the the forms is
actually just his "mark" so someone else actually wrote his name.
Perhaps that's how the spelling got changed in some cases.

Ken, you had wrote the following sentence,
"The above named publication lists nine children but NO"
Betsey/Elizabeth
I was just wondering what are the nine children's names. Sometimes a
womans/girls name might not be as you think it would be spelled but another nickname
for Elizabeth/Betsey such as, Bell, Bella, Belle, Bess, Bessie, Bessy, Beth,
Bette, Bettie, Bettie, Betsy, Betsey, Bitsy, Buffy, Ella, Elsie, Eliza,
Libby, Lili, Lisette, Liz, Lizette, Lizzie, Lizzy, Lysette, Bet and there might
be more.
I have run into this several times. Just a thought.

I assume you mean Betsey Clough's husband, John Brown??? The only one I
know is my gr gr grandfather, also John Brown, possibly a Jr., who
married twice, Mary (Wakefield) Parsons and Olive Taylor. He was Mary
Wakefield's second husband. the first having been Jotham Parsons. If
memory serves me Mary and Jotham may have been 1st cousins.
I don't know if John and Betsey had other children or not, but wouldn't
be surprised to find out they did. I've been to the Evergreen Cemetery
in Kennebunk where some of my Brown(e) ancestors are buried and there
are quite a number of Cloughs/Cluffs interred there as well.
Hope you can help solve some of this for me.
