Subject: [CLOUGH-GENEALOGY] My Brickwall
Hi Thank you for your Welcome ..
I have a Ancestor - Sarah CLOUGH .. she married William BENFOLD
I have found her on a census and it says she was born in " Bersdale"
Yorkshire
I suspect this is a misheard " Birstal" I am not sure
Can find a Sarah CLOUGH born in Birstal in 1811 but it says she died
in infancy and not sure how to confirm , this burial
can find a few Sarah CLOUGH but cant find anything what might be a "
bersdale "
I cant find her in 1841 but i guess it would only say Yorkshire at the
very most
she died in 1860 so no more census to look at ...
I have started collecting information on CLOUGH's in Yorkshire in the
hope to connect to my family but if not it is good fun anyhow ...
if you have any Sarah CLOUGH in your tree please let me know ..
and any CLOUGH in Yorkshire would help to to add to my Database...
I am now off to have a look at your webpage thanks again !
Regards
Karen

I was talking to my daughter-in-law earlier this evening. She had
found the first book published by the society on e-bay. It got me to
thinking about the society. We haven't had a newsletter since about
May of this year. Thought one was suppose to be published in
September. Did we miss it?

Greetings from Wales !
As far as I'm aware I'm not related to this family but I've just done a
little research and the results follow:
Birth of Garwin Clough, 3rd quarter of 1845 in parish of Easington, Co.
Durham, Ref: XXIV 138.
Birth of Frances Elizabeth Morgan, 3rd quarter of 1839 in Hereford parish,
Ref: XXVI 154.
OR
Birth of Frances Elizabeth Morgan, 1st quarter of 1844 in parish of
Brecknock, Ref: XXVI 262.
Marriage of Gawien Clough and Frances Isabella Morgan, 2nd quarter of 1875
in Durham (city), Ref: 10a 608. Note - I could not trace the birth of a
Frances Elizabeth Morgan in the first quarter of 1843 as quoted in the 1900 Census
of Spring Creek, IA. The two possibilities quoted above are the result of
searching all F.E.Morgan births in England and Wales from July 1837 to December
1845. Wolsingham (not Woolsingham as shown in our 1881 Census) is in County
Durham, but believing she was born there may have been a genuine mistake on
her part - Morgan is a Welsh name, Brecknock is part of Wales and a lot of
Welsh miners moved to the Durham coalfields during the 19th Century. I
understand that Isabella is the latin form of Elizabeth and the fact that Morgan was
given to their son as a second Christian name seems satisfactory evidence
that we have correctly identified the wife of Garwin.
1881 Census, parish of Brandon & Byshottles, County Durham:
Address 22 Front Row, Browney Colliery, Brandon:
Clough, Grawein. Head, married, age 35, coal miner, born Durham,
Pelton Fell.
do. Frances Isaa.Wife, do , do 35, do.
Do. , Woolsingham.
do. Esther. Dau. do 4
do. Do. , Browney Coll(iery).
do. John Morgan. Son. do 3 d
o. Do. , Hett.
do. Mary Eliz. Dau. do. 1
do. Do. , Browney Coll(iery).
Hope this helps to create a fuller picture of the family.
Sincerely,
Peter Clough
