John,
This mailing list is turning out to be more helpful than I ever
imagined! Thank you so much for sharing your ancestry. Have either you
or your nephew contemplated joining in the DNA studies...? It would be
a fantastic contribution to us all!

The recent history (last couple of hundred years)of my family is based
around Liverpool, Manchester, (South Lancashire and Cheshire as was).
My Nephew, Paul Clough, is currently investigating our ancestry. I will
pass your email onto him as he may be able to make some connections.

Curt,
Have you completed a DNA test by chance? I believe you are related to
Cathie Coyle and I; more distantly related to Susan Clough Wyatt. Becky
Harpole reported the matches to us this summer. Your family tree is
very much like Cathie's. Would you mind sending it again with some
years of birth and/or death...?
You don't happen to know any CLOUGH's living in Cheshire today...?

Hope I get to meet you (and all who have posted) at the next John Clough
Genealogicla Society Reunion.

Hello Everybody. My line of Cloughs are Southern and tricky! My earliest
KNOWN Clough relative is my 3x great grandfather William Clough I who appeared
in Tyrrell County, North Carolina in 1801. His birthdate is estimated to be
circa 1765. William was a surveyor and involved in local community issues
but he only said he was from England and New England - no dates, no specific
information. William married Nancy Brickhouse Davenport in 1805 and they had
three children - William II, Rowan, and Mary. The children were orphaned
circa 1822, and the boys bound out to other families to learn a trade. It's
most likely that Mary was taken in and raised by another family. My cousins in
North Carolina who descend from William I's second son Rowan have been
searching for 30 years for more information about the family to no avail. The
daughter Mary may/may not have married a Spruill and also went to Alabama.
There is a persistent family legend that my Clough family was involved in
shipping and that one ancestor was a sea captain whose son was born onboard
ship. Information found in a letter belonging to a cousin was "that
grandfather's name was Joseph but he took the name William when he went to sea" and
that "grandfather was born in Massachusetts". No idea which grandpa is referred
to but it's most likely to have been William's oldest son, William Clough II.
William II traveled by wagon train with a group of other Carolina relatives
and neighbors to Benton County, (now Calhoun County) Alabama in 1842. One
branch of William II's line moved to Plainview, Texas but for the most part
everyone stayed in Alabama.
When the group of five Clough researchers participated in the original
surname DNA study in 2001, everyone was determined to be identical or closely
related to the Denbigh, Wales Cloughs except for my group. We were 4/5 markers
different but I recently discovered via an old obituary of a known relative
that we are related to the Denbigh, Wales Cloughs (no idea how). My Cloughs
arrived in the New York Colony and were from Scotland. Most of my leads seem
to end up in New York and I discovered via later DNA testing that I am fairly
closely related (2 DNA markers different to John Clough Society and the
Denbigh, Wales Cloughs) to the Dutch Clough/Clauw/Clow/Clowes of Schenectady New
York and the Connecticut/Canada Huguenot Clow family.
My closest DNA match to date are the Clough/Clow family of Maryland and
Delaware (1 DNA marker different to the Denbigh, Wales Cloughs). Further back (3
markers different) are the Yorkshire Cloughs - primarily from around
Bradford and Keighley in West Yorkshire.
Recently a member of the Stafford, Virginia Cloe/Clough/Clow family matched
the Welsh group. They are from Scotland also but were known to have been
Welsh.
There are two additional DNA tests pending - a Cluett who has the same
family motto as the Cloughs and are French and Belgian and a Clowes whose family
came from Derbyshire, England to Jamaica, Long Island, New York. I'll let the
group know when the results become available if there are any matches.
In the meantime, if any of you are truly stumped, we've had a lot of success
with the DNA surname study. The research still has to be done, but it
eliminates a lot of guesswork. Let me know if any of you are interested in
testing. Susan Clough Wyatt and Nancy Cluff Siders who only matched each other for
the longest time recently found two additional matches - one of whom is of
Scottish descent and living in Prince Edward Island. There's no way some of
us would have ever been able to make connections without this tool.
If any of you want to compare notes, let me know that too. I have a huge
volume of "previous relatives" information and can likely point you in the
direction of other Clough researchers.
The next Clough trip to England is scheduled for September 2006 and there
are still spaces available. Sheila Andersen is coordinating that trip. We've
always had a great time on the trips and met a lot of British relatives.

Dear Listers,
I encourage all of you who are descended from John Clough of Salisbury, MA
to join the John Clough Genealogical Society (JCGS). Our annual (yearly) dues
are only $12. With that $12 you will then receive our quarterly newsletter
and will be kept abreast of the latest happenings in the Society.
This is the beginning of a new year and this is when our dues come up for
renewal so anyone on the list who is currently a member please keep this in
mind.
I will be happy to assist all of you who are currently seeking your Clough
ancestry. My Clough database is VERY large and usually very helpful. Just
please keep in mind that I work full-time, do overtime, and care for my now 14
month old son so I may not get back to you in very quick fashion. However, I
have a lot of passion for my volunteer work as the Genealogist for the JCGS
and will get back to everyone. I also like reminders from those who haven't
heard from me in a while.
To join the JCGS please contact our Treasurer, John R. Clough. His e-mail

Dear Listers,
The show I was involved in is scheduled to be aired on the History Channel
Feb. 20. However, the History Channel may choose to change the airing date so
keep your eyes and ears open to History Channel promos.
The show is 'Digging for the Truth.' The episode I was involved in is 'Lost
Colony of Roanoke.' Again, the History Channel may change the title if they
feel like it.
In the episode you will see how DNA has been used to try and find any
possible descendants of anyone who may have survived the first settlement of
Roanoke. Dr. Bryan Sykes is the finale of the show with the results.
For all of you who are new to the list, Dr. Sykes met my first group of
Clough family members - we were visiting Clough related sites in Great Britain -
at Oxford University in October 2001 when he gave us the results of our first
batch of DNA analysis. He also created Oxford Ancestors, Ltd., the first
company created to harnessing the precision of DNA analysis for use in the
genealogical field. It was at that meeting with my first group that he invited
me to see him when he was in Boston, MA three months later. Long story short,
I met with him and the CEO of Oxford Ancestors, Ltd. and they hired me to
run their US branch.
My second group of Clough family members was able to meet the then CEO, Dr.
David Ashworth, when we visited Portmeirion in 2003. Portmeirion was built
by the famous Welsh architect - and Sir Richard Clough descendant - Sir Clough
Williams-Ellis. It was there that I was able to put together a grand
meeting of American and British Clough family members.
In any event, please look for the show and if anyone can tape it for me let
me know. I should be receiving my own DVD of the show but will have to wait
until after the season of shows ends near the end of March. The History
Channel is cracking down on that.
If you are able to catch the program please let me know what you thought of
it. The producer I worked with is quite keen to hear folks remarks on it.
For those of you who were on either of my trips, please feel free to write
your thoughts on your experiences to the list so that our newest members might
enjoy reading them.
The next 'Clough Family Trip to Great Britain' is tentatively scheduled for
September or October 2006. There are some issues I need to work out before I
can commit to a date so I will keep you all posted. In the meantime, anyone
who is not currently on my list of interested persons and who wish to join
us on the next trip should contact me at your earliest convenience.

researching southern Clough lines. Rebecca and I both went on one of Sheila's

testing. We are each several markers off from the John Clough line and several
markers off from each other.
Mary, let us know where your earliest Clough ancestor came from and we'll
compare notes. I'm searching for the ancestors of my ggg Clough who was born
in Virginia in 1820, orphaned early in life, but we assume George Washington
Clough was his birth name. He migrated to East Texas around 1840-45 where we
can easily pick up his trail.
Good luck, Susan Clough Wyatt
