Hello All,
Well once again I have a death to report.
My Aunt Mrs. Cryena Clough, wife of the late Harry Clough (he passed away
last Dec.) died yesterday in the Keene NH Hospital after a long illness. She
recently went into a coma and never came out of it. She died with her 2 of
her 4 children by her side. Viewing Services will be held at Foley's Funeral
Home tomorrow night and burial will be on Thursday morning.
She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.

Dear Listers,
In my possession I have the 2 volume set entitled, "John Hayes of Dover, New
Hampshire - A Book of His Family." It was compiled and published by
Katharine F. Richmond, Tyngsboro, Mass. 1936. Copyright 1936 by Katharine F.
Richmond. Printed in the U.S.A. by The Tuttle Publishing Company, Inc., Rutland,
Vermont.
First of all, it seems from the e-mails I have read that Barnes and Noble is
selling a copy of this work published by Higginson Book Company. As far as
I know they are a company that takes genealogical books, copies them, and
then resells them for a nice profit. This may even be the company our
Historian, Langdon Clough, and I had dealings with in regard to selling our Clough
books. We, the John Clough Genealogical Society, have never granted permission
for others to sell our publications. I wonder if Katharine F. Richmond gave
her consent for her hard work to be copied and sold by another.
The copy of the set I have is, "Property of Clough Society 2 volumes Presen
ted by Mrs. Katherine F. Richmond Descendant of Elizabeth Clough Horne."
At a quick glance I do not see a reference of John Clough and Jane Sanders.
In the index under the surnames Sanborn, Sanders, Sanderson, and Saunders
there is only one reference to a Jane Sanderson, daughter of Richard Hayes
Sanderson. She was born Aug. 6, 1879.
The index has several Clough, and one Cluff, references. The Hayes family
was quite intermarried with the Clough family so this is of no surprise.
Following are 2 paragraphs retyped from page 26 of volume I that precedes a
reference to our John Clough as well as a third paragraph from pages 26 and 27
of volume I that have the reference of our John Clough. However, please
note the discrepancy when the paragraph refers to "John and Jane Clough of
Salisbury, who are supposed to have come to America in the Elizabeth in 1635."
For those of us who have seen copies of the ships log we know that Jane was
not among those who sailed on the Elizabeth with our John. Katharine Richmond
makes reference to "David W. Hoyt: "Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury,"
1898, p. 99" as the source of that information.
From the book:
First Generation
According to tradition generally current in all branches of his family, John
Hayes was born in Scotland. This tradition is supported by persuasive
evidence, as set forth in the preceding chapter of this book. He died in Dover,
NH, 25 Oct. 1708, "seized of a malignant fever four days after he was taken
sick; began with a violent pain in his shoulder," as recorded at the time in
the Journal of Rev. John Pike, minister of First Church, Dover. This Journal,
now in the archives of the Massachusetts Historical Society, was edited and
published in 1876 by Rev. Alonzo H. Quint, D. D., and the foregoing quotation
appears on page 24.
It is supposed by some of the descendants of John Hayes that he is buried
between Tolend Road and Barbados Pond on the Marsh Brook Lot of the late George
O. Hayes, a descendant in the sixth generation, who lived and died on the
farm of his great-grandfather. Mr. Hayes, when over ninety years of age,
pointed out to the writer of this book the spot which he and others have supposed
to be the grave. This Marsh Brook Lot is located on the cross road leading
from Concord State Road to Tolend Road. The burial ground is marked by
uninscribed field stones only, one of which was supposed by Mr. George O. Hayes and
Mr. James Chesley Hayes to mark the grave of the pioneer. Both of these men
and their ancestors had lived in this neighborhood all their lives. James
Chesley Hayes was known to have inherited old papers from which he derived his
clue, but these papers have passed out of the custody of the family under
circumstances that make them inaccessible, even if they still exist. Another
possible place of burial has been suggested. On the Wolcott farm on Concord
Road in Dover, there was an ancient Hayes burial ground, the stones of which
were probably removed to Pine Hill Cemetery when the Boston and Maine Railroad
was extended through it. This old burial ground was on land which is known
to have been an original grant to the pioneer John Hayes and was occupied by
his son Ichabod and Ichabod's descendants. Another possibility is that he
was buried in a burying ground near his garrison house mentioned on page 29.
The marriage of John Hayes is on record in the Archives of the New Hampshire
Historical Society at Concord as follows: "Jn Haise and Mary his wife were
mar. ye 28 June 1686 pr Jus: Coffin." Dr. John Randolph Ham's compilation,
"Horne Family of Dover, N. H." of which manuscript copies may be seen in the
Dover Public Library and in the Library of the Historic Genealogical Society in
Boston, Mass., records that Mary Horne was the daughter of William and
Elizabeth (Clough) Horne of Salisbury, Mass., and Dover, N. H. She was a
granddaughter of John and Jane Clough of Salisbury, who are supposed to have come to
America in the Elizabeth in 1635 (David W. Hoyt: "Old Families of Salisbury
and Amesbury," 1898, p. 99). Mary Horne was born, presumably, between 1667
and 1672, according to the known birth dates of the other children of the
family in an apparently consecutive list. Her father William Horne was then
living in Dover, as shown by Old Norfolk County Deeds as follows: John Clough of
Salisbury, Carpenter, for £700 sells William Horne of Dover, husbandman, 53
acres about my house in Salisbury 7 Nov. 1665 (2:52); William Horne of Dover
being unable to pay the £700 relinquishes his rights to John Clough, 19 May 1666
(2:68). We have no doubt that Mary Horne grew up on Horne's Hill on what
is now Sixth Street, Dover, near Whitcher's or Tolend Falls, for William Horne
purchased 240 acres of land at that location from Elder Edward Starbuck on 20
Sept. 1661 and there made his home. Mary Horne's father was killed three
years after her marriage to John Hayes in the Indian massacre of 28 June 1689
at the Waldron garrison house where the Dover Court House now stands. Mary's
mother Elizabeth, probably, was killed by Indians 20 Sept. 1707, as appears
in the Journal of Rev. John Pike: "Old widow Horn was taken by the Indians
near the Lower Corner of Capt. Gerrishes field, as she travelled the Road; the
same Day several Troops [soldiers] passed the Road both bef: & after she was
taken."

Dear Cousins,
Nowhere so far have I found records that name a "Jane" as wife of John 1
CLOUGH.
Marriage records for John 1 CLOUGH cannot be found in the Charlestown,
Watertown, or Salisbury, MA, marriage records. Has anyone researched Boston, MA, or
other towns for vital records?
"Jane" CLOUGH is never mentioned in the Salisbury, MA, vital records. John 1
CLOUGH's wife is only listed as "Jone" in the Salisbury, MA, vital records,
and as "Jone" and "Joannah" in the court records, Essex County Quarterly Court
Records.
Source: Deaths, heading "CLOUGH," "Vital Records of Salisbury,
Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849." Topsfield, MA: The Topsfield Historical
Society, 1915, pages 539-541.
John1 CLOUGH is mentioned with his wife "Jone" (not Jane) in the births of
his children under "Salisbury Births" (they are listed in the book in
alphabetical order):
Elizabeth, d. John and Jone, 16: 10 m: 1642 (p. 49)
Mary, d. John and Jone, 30: 5 m: 1644 (p. 51)
Sarah, d. John and Jone, 28: 4 m: 1646 (p. 52)
John, s. John and Jone, 9: 1 m: 1648 (p. 50)
Thomas, s. John and Jone, 29: 3 m: 1651 (p. 52)
Martha, d. John and Jone, Mar. 17, 1691 (p. 51)
Samuell, s. John and Jone [Joannah. CT. R.], 20: 12 m: 1656 ( p. 51)
"Jane" would not be a conceivable nickname for "Joannah," but "Jone" (a
variation of "Joan") would be appropriate.
Some surnames suggested for Jane CLOUGH are McCUMBER, SAUNDERS/SANDERS, and
TAYLOR. A John CLOUGH married a Jane TAYLOR in London 5 Sept 1627, and
departed from England in 1635, the year John Clough arrived in the colonies.
However, John is not listed on the ship "Elizabeth" as traveling with a wife.
Jane SANDERS is listed as John 1 CLOUGH's wife by Katherine F. Richmond in
her book "John Hayes of Dover, NH - a Book of his Family," vol. I, Tyngsboro,
MA, 1936, page 36. I can't find a Jane SANDERS anywhere else to date.
An unknown source lists Jane SAUNDERS being born 3 Sept 1615, South London,
England. I haven't found the souce records for this.
The following individuals named Jone, Joan, Joane, Hanna, Joannah, and Jane
(those who would be an appropriate age for John 1 CLOUGH's wife) immigrated to
New England between 1631 - 1638 (some are married but certainly could have
been widowed at a later date):
Aboard the "Susan & Ellen:"

If all the records available list "Jone" or "Joannah" as John 1 CLOUGH's wife
and mother of his children, where did the name "Jane" originate in the first
place??? I truly think we need to search for a female with the given first
name "Joannah" who was born either in Britain or New England. I think searching
for a "Jane" has been fruitless long enough.
Penny for your thoughts.
Your cousin,
Linda F.
Thank you for clearing that up. I guess Bob was mistaken or was thinking of
the wrong family somewhere along the way.
I appreciate your time and effort in this!

I guess we are two Bob Kings. My email address is bob(a)122walnut.com. I asked
where I could buy or borrow or go and see the Clough book that someone
refered to in an email answer to my original query about Timothy and Abigail
Clough. I haven't seen the email from the other Bob King.

Thanks Teddie, that would be great! It is so hard to do research here in
Alamogordo, New Mexico! I have to get most of my information through the
mail, internet or family and friends. All help is greatly appreciated!

Hello
As Editor for the John Clough Society, and list admin for the
Gilligan-L,chamberlain-L,Gauthier-l mailing lists I had nothing to do with the above book.
I have not even read it or seen it for that matter. I am not sure how
my signature got there.
I have tried to search for our "Jane's" surname, but so far have not come
up with anything. I have done quite a bit of research into the Sanders name
and can not find anything to prove or disprove that there was a Jane who
would have been the correct age to marry our John.
So if someone could give me this Mr King's email I will contact him and
inquire how this information was put there. Thank You.

Good Morning,
I can't remember who asking about the Sweet surname but I have just
found in a grave stone in our cemetery project that reads;
Sweet, Marinda born Nov. 10, 1821 and died May 26, 1847 she was married
to Alvin Starkey who was born Dec. 27, 1821 and died June 27, 1882.
The stone is located in the Mount Caesar Cemetery of Swanzey NH..
I hope this is of some help.
Vern
Hi Shelia,
First of all, I want to wish you better health! That "Tick" issue was
very disturbing to me. Ticks have been bad around here the last few years. Three
of my Grandchildren had to go to hospital to have them removed. My 3
year old Grandson had one in the groove of his ear when he was barely one
year old.
I could not get it out, especially with a kicking and screaming child. That
one was the small black deer tick. I have always worried about that, and
after reading your e-mail, it has me more concerned.
I sure wish I could help you out with Rhys. I have 8 Grandchildren and
3 of them are one year old.
I would be interested to know when the show airs on the History channel.
Please try to take time for yourself.............it's very important.
I look forward to the visit with you and your Aunt.
Take Care,
Betty Clough Waddell
