I wanted to tell you about a book written about Captain Benjamin Clough that
is available now. The name of the book and the title isn't about his
impairment but the situation in which he found himself . It is called, "In the Wake
of Madness" by Joan Druett. It's a paperback that was released in April 2004
and the author writes sailing adventures. There's even a picture of Ben! I
found this information on http://members.authorsguild.net/druettjo/work2.htm.
Take care. Becky
Hello Cousins,
I just want to take this time to announce that my Uncle Reggie Houle passed
away yesterday at home after a 17 year illness. He is the husband of Phylis
Clough (my Mother's sister). Services will be held on Friday in Keene NH.
My Uncle Vern and him were very close so I know he is taking this hard.

Dear Clough Trippers,
Following is an updated possible itinerary for the April 2006 trip. Please
remember that this is subject to change dependent on many variables. Let me
know what you think.
Day 1 (April 9) Arrive in Paris and check into hotel.
Day 2 (April 10) Paris attractions (possibly the Eiffel Tower, Arc de
Triumph, a Seine River Cruise).
Day 3 (April 11) Visit Castle Blain (see Vol. I of ‘Descendants of John
Clough of Salisbury, Mass.’).
Day 4 (April 12) Visit Versailles in the morning and head to our Brussels
hotel in the afternoon.
Day 5 (April 13) Visit Antwerp.
Day 6 (April 14) Visit Lieden (where the Pilgrims lived before heading back
to England and boarding the Mayflower).
Day 7 (April 15) Fly from Brussels to Manchester (England). Have our coach
pick us up at the airport and head to our northern Wales accommodations.
Day 8 (April 16) Easter in Wales.
Day 9 (April 17) In Wales.
Day 10 (April 18) In Wales.
Day 11 (April 19) Head to York and visit the Jorvic Center. Stay in York.
Day 12 (April 20) Head to London and have afternoon group activity.
Day 13 (April 21) In London.
Day 14 (April 22) In London. London walk-about with Rebecca.
Day 15 (April 23) Leave to go home.
With this itinerary we would be staying in Paris for 3 nights, Brussels for 3
nights, Wales for 4 nights, York for 1 night, and London for 3 nights.
Staying in the same hotel for more than one night is always helpful and I really
want to provide that this time around.
As you can see, we would be in Wales on Easter. How do folks feel about
that? Also, Amsterdam is not included. In order to include Amsterdam we would
have to do one of the following: cut out visiting another city; add another day
to the trip; or cut out a day in Wales or London. Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Billie,
Yes, you and Ward are on my list. :-) It is such a compliment to have so
many repeat travelers! :-)
As of this morning I have 17 on the list.
Much Affection,
Sheila
Hi Jillian,
Yes, I have you and your parents on my list of travelers. :-) Very
excited you all wish to join in! :-)
I was thinking I would like for the group to arrive a day earlier in Paris so
that we may spend the second day there doing exactly what you mention in your
e-mail - the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triumph, and maybe a little Seine River
cruise. Great minds run alike! :-) I was speaking to Rebecca about this
the other day but my only concern is the number of days. If other folks do
not mind the trip being so long then we can certainly work this into the
itinerary. Besides, I was thinking we should plan to stay in Paris the day after we
all arrive in case any of us have trouble with flights the day before.
I will look into the Portobello Road Market. I have heard of it and have
wanted to go myself. While chatting with Rebecca the other day she mentioned the
Petticoat Market. I will see what I can find out since I wanted folks to be
able to check out either one after doing the walk-about with Rebecca where she
shows folks where a John Clough and his father used to live in London.
Rhys and I are well but he is demanding my attention at the moment. Probably
hungry again. So, I will have to go for now.
Thanks for your e-mail! :-)
Much Affection,
Sheila
Dear Debbie,
Thank you for your interest in next year's trip! :-) Unfortunately, I
have no idea how much the trip will cost. I won't know until after everyone has
signed on, we get quotes for coaches, quotes for hotels, and airfare from
Brussels to Manchester. That is not including individual airfare from travelers
homes from across the US whether it be to meet with me in Boston and fly from
there or to meet in Paris.
The cost of the trip in Sept. 2003 was about $1,500 per person but that did
not include the airfare to Britain. The trip was 10 days, we stayed in London
for several days, stayed in north Wales for several days, and spent a night in
Oxford. The places we saw included private homes as well as tourist
attractions (very short synopsis).
Since this next trip will be longer the price will be higher. Also, the
exchange rate is not in our favor. When we went in Sept. 2003 the exchange rate
was about $1.60 to the British Pound. Now it is about $1.92. And this time
around we will be flying one way from the Continent to England. My guess is
that folks will be paying well over $2,000 per person just for the trip, not
including airfare from local international airports.
Please let me know if you and your father are truly interested as I already
have 15 signed up and will be limiting the group to 20.
Hope to hear from you soon! :-)
Best Wishes,
Sheila Andersen

Hi, Sheila!
Do you have a ball-park figure for what this might cost? I am very
interested in going and I'm sure my Dad would be interested, too, if we
could have an idea how much money we need.
Thanks,

Dear Listers,
I have about 15 individuals interested in next year's trip so far, including
me and my son. I am limiting the number to 20 so if you are seriously
interested in the trip please contact me ASAP. Anyone contacting me after I
have
reached the max of 20 will be put on a reserve list.
Below you will see a possible rough itinerary. Please remember that this is
subject to change dependent on many possible variables. Also, I encourage
trip members input so please let me hear from you about your thoughts on the
itinerary.
Day 1 - Arrive in Paris and check into Paris hotel.
Day 2 - Visit Castle Blain (see first part of Vol. I of "Descendants of John
Clough of Salisbury, Mass.")
Day 3 - Visit Bayeux to see the "Bayeux Tapestry" (refresh memories on 1066
invasion of William the Conqueror).
Day 4 - Visit Versailles in the morning. Drive to Antwerp in the afternoon
and check into hotel.
Day 5 - Visit Leiden (where the Pilgrims lived before returning to England
and hiring the Mayflower for their cross Atlantic journey) and possibly The
Hague (world court).
Day 6 - Visit Brussels.
Day 7 - Fly from Antwerp to Manchester, England. Have our coach pick us up
to bring us to our northern Wales hotel. It would be great to stay at
Portmeirion for several days but the price may simply be too much with the
poor
exchange rate. Otherwise, I can ask the Williams-Ellis's if we might rent
their
self-catering cottages again.
Day 8 - In Wales
Day 9 - In Wales
Day 10 - In Wales
Day 11 - Leave Wales and visit York. Stay in York overnight.
Day 12 - Leave York and head to London and our London hotel.
Day 13 - In London. Visit British Museum.
Day 14 - In London. Do London Walk-about with Rebecca to see places
pertaining to a certain John Clough.
Day 15 - Leave to go home.
Please keep the following in mind and let me know your preferences:
- With the exception of staying in York for one night, I have made
allowance's for us to stay in one hotel for 3 to 4 consecutive nights. This
will
certainly be helpful in many respects.
- We can visit Amsterdam but we would have to forgo Bayeux. We would simply
stay one night less in Paris and one more night in Antwerp.
- We can stay in Brussels instead of Antwerp. Rebecca will be in Antwerp in
April and will be able to shed much more light on things when she returns.
- You will notice that I have not included Hamburg, Germany or Edinburgh,
Scotland. As you can see, the trip easily takes 15 days (not including the
day
we leave from the US). In order to fit Hamburg and Edinburgh into the
itinerary we would have to stay much longer.
- The travel agent I deal with is not very excited about having us fly from
Brussels to Manchester because of possible airline difficulties. However,
any
of us could have airline difficulties at any stage of our trip. The travel
agent suggests we start in London and have the same coach for the duration
of
the trip and cross the English Channel via ferry. The reason I prefer for
us to
fly from Brussels to Manchester is the savings in time. If we did the
itinerary the way she suggests then we would lose at least 2 days because of
land/sea travel time. Please let me know your thoughts on this.
Again, anyone else who is seriously interested in the trip needs to contact
me ASAP. All those contacting me after I have reached the max number of 20
will be put on a reserve list as 'first come first served.'
Best Wishes to All,
Sheila Andersen

Hi Dean and Martha,
It will be wonderful to have you both on another trip! :-)
I have made a note that you wish to have accommodations in Paris for 3 nights
prior.
Thank you for your Portmeirion and Glasfryn suggestions. I will see what can
be worked out.
Much Affection,
Sheila
Hi Rebecca,
Yes, the Viking Museum is exactly where I would like to take folks and I have
been looking into their group opportunities. Hopefully I will be able to
surprise the group with a unique type of visit there. :-)
I will chat with you soon! :-)
Much Affection,
Sheila
Hi Sheila. I called and left a message on your machine. It would have been
around 2:30 your time. I've printed your message and will look over it
carefully. Oddly enough, there's a day trip to York the end of April. There's the
Viking Museum there that I highly recommend but standing in line can be
tedious. It's like going backward in time until you get to the Viking era and then
you come forward and exit with the archeology project that actually happened
in York. The travel agent might could get us a block of tickets in advance
because it's the standing in line that takes up the time. The actual visit can
be accomplished in an hour or so. There's a gift shop where you can buy
related items and authentically dressed Vikings entertain you and you can have your
picture made with them. It's fun. Is there anything at York that you need
updated information on? It's been awhile since I've been there. I'm not sure
of the dates but every year York reenacts a Viking invasion which is a hoot -
no raping or pillaging but they do take prisoners. It might be a bit crowded
there at that time though. I'll be home afternoon your time. I have to go to
the tax office tomorrow. Joy of joys! Love, Becky
