Dear Listers,
Here is some information someone was kind enough to share with me last year
from the 'Story of the Wisconsin River and Early History of Adams County, May
1905.' Note that Kilbourn is the old name for Wisconsin Dells.
After you have read through it please note the questions I have pertaining to
the information in the story. If anyone can assist is answering my
questions, please let me know. Perhaps someone out there can obtain a copy of this and
verify the information in it.
"From the Story of the Wisconsin River and Early History of Adams County, May
1905:
The Ninety-Third Birthday of a Pioneer
On the 26th of March a pleasant company of neighbors and friends met at the
home of Mrs. D. T. Odell in Kilbourn in honor of the 92d birthday of her
mother-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Odell, who began life before the close of the last war for
American independence. Ruth Phoenix was born in York county Maine March 15,
1813, her ancestors having fought in war for independence. In 1831 she married
Daniel Clough whose father was a soldier under Washington, and with his three
sons, one this lady's husband, in the war of 1812. In 1855 she came with her
husband and family to Walworth county. They came to Portage in 1849 and for many
years the family were active men in that city. Their house stood on the
ground now occupied by the post office, and the same house is now the M.E.
parsonage. In 1855 her husband died and she made her home with her step-sons in
Portage until 1867, when she was married to Hiram Odell, of the town of Excelsior,
Sauk county. Mr. Odell died in 1855 [sic], and she continued to make her home
with her step-son, D.T. Odell, until they moved to Kilbourn several years ago.
Though she was never the mother of children she was all that an own mother
could have been to her step-children. The following are the names of those and
their descendents:
Wm. Clough, father of Prof. W.G. Clough, of Portage.
Daniel Clough, father of Adelbert, of Downing, Wis.; Herbert, Custer,
Wash.; Mrs. W. E. Collins, Downing, Wis.; Mrs. Sarah Odell, Kilbourn.
David Clough, whose widow and children live in Maine and a son in St. Paul.
Benjamin and Steven Clough of Kilbourn, and Mrs. E.N. Sargent of Big
Spring, are descendants of her husband's brother Daniel; Sylvester Clough, Mrs.
Orrin Foster, of Kilbourn, and Mrs. Moses of Pennsylvania are descendants of
another brother, Stephen.
In the Odell family there were the following descendants of her husband,
Hiram Odell:
Mrs. Rebecca Vandermark, Ortonville, Minn.; Mrs. Elizabeth Braley, Monowi,
Neb.; Jasper Odell, North Freedom; and Mrs. Ortt of St. Paul and D.T. Odell of
Kilbourn, deceased.
Though now in her ninety-third year Mrs. Odell is yet a vigorous old lady and
her faculties, except for a slight deafness, are bright and accute. She reads
constantly, gets around actively and talks entertainingly of events that
happened in her life before the birth of people who are now great grandparents."
- The above says, "In 1855 she came with her husband and family to Walworth
county." It then says, "They came to Portage in 1849 and for many years the
family were active men in that city." ...Is the author simply listing things
out of order or is there a wrong year in there?
- Then the above says, "In 1855 her husband died..." ...Did he die the same
year they moved to Walworth County or is a wrong year listed in there?
- The above says, "she made her home with her step-sons in Portage until
1867, when she was married to Hiram Odell. Mr. Odell died in 1855." ...Obviously
there is a wrong year somewhere here since he could not have died in 1855 and
then marry Ruth in 1867. When did Hiram Odell really die?
- The above mentions Clough descendants, including "Daniel Clough, father of
Adelbert, of Downing, Wis.; Herbert, Custer, Wash.; Mrs. W. E. Collins,
Downing, Wis.; Mrs. Sarah Odell, Kilbourn." ...I have 6 children listed for this
Daniel but none are named Adelbert. Anyone know who this Adelbert is? Anyone
have clues as to who the rest of the people are in the list? Herbert? Custer?
Wash? Mrs. W. W. Collins? Mrs. Sarah Odell? It is difficult when they
only list women's married names.
- The above says, "David Clough, whose widow and children live in Maine and a
son in St. Paul." ...The wife I have listed for David is Hannah Davenport
Clough, a cousin of his. This story was written in 1905 and says he was a widow
by then. However, I have Hannah's death date as March 27, 1916 in Canton,
MA. Something seems awry here! It also states that his children live in Maine
but then says a son was in St. Paul. I only have two children for this David
and they are both daughters. One of his daughters, Lydia Rand Clough, I have
listed as having been born December 01, 1852 in Portage, WI and died December
21, 1890 in St. Paul, MN. Did he have more children I am unaware of?
- The above mentions, "Benjamin and Steven Clough of Kilbourn." ...Who are
they?
- The above mentions, "Mrs. E.N. Sargent of Big Spring, are descendants of
her husband's brother Daniel." ...Since Ruth's husband's name was Daniel, I
don't think he had a brother also named Daniel. This must be referring to a
different part of the family. Any ideas on who they are?
The above mentions, "Sylvester Clough, Mrs. Orrin Foster, of Kilbourn, and
Mrs. Moses of Pennsylvania are descendants of another brother, Stephen." ...Who
are they?
Any help on the above will be greatly appreciated! I am simply unable to
research the many, many, many different Clough lines we have so I have to rely on
family members to assist in researching their own lines and any additional
lines they may be able to.
Many Thanks,

Dear Listers,
Just a reminder that our John Clough Genealogical Society reunion is fast
approaching. It will be held July 31 in Castleton, VT. Rita Clough and her son,
Langdon, have been kind enough to put this reunion together so I hope we have
a wonderful turn out!
For all of you who know me and are accustomed to seeing me at the reunions
with my computer and a ton of other goodies, things will be different this year.
I just spent 3 days in the hospital due to pre-term contractions and was
sent home on bed rest. I still hope to attend our reunion but if I do I will not
have much in tow since I will be counting on the good graces of others to
assist me in whatever ways possible. As difficult as it may be for me to lie low
and depend on others, I will do my best to do so for the sake of my son. It
is too early for him to be born and his room is not ready. :-)
I am still planning to give a presentation on the Clough trip I led this past
September. Flipping transparencies will be easy enough to do. For all in
attendance, you will be able to see wonderful photos taken by those on the trip
of the amazing places we saw and people we met.
At the reunion you will be able to meet several of the trip members, many of
whom will be attending a JCGS reunion for the first time! :-)
Please come and enjoy our reunion! It will be a day packed with wonderful
association, an internationally renowned organist, a guest speaker, and field
trip!
Best Wishes to All!

Just also figured out you need to use the following address for the World War
II memorial website.
wwiimemorial.com ( Not worldwariimemorial.com)
If you use National World War II Mememorial as the key words, you will get
there, by selecting Official Site when the list comes up.
Enter: National World War II Memorial and do a search. You will then find
the official website and can then either look up names that are already there
or add new names. I sent my uncle's name in at the beginning of the project
and did find him currently listed today.
