Hello,
Just adding some info I found on Ralph Blaisdell father
of Martha Blaisdell.
from "Supplement to the Hess Family
in America 1984" by Barbara Allison who has researched these
family lines for many years.
Ralph Blaisdell was born caa 1607 based on estimated date of marriage.
He married Elizabeth Parker 3 Sept 1629. Occupation tailor. He was in
York, Maine between 1637-1640 then this family resided in Salisbury,
MA. All it says about daughter Martha is that she was born ca 1640 and
married Richard Bowden. I would think form this she was born in York,
Maine?

That thought is a pretty good one I would say. Maybe it would be worth
looking into. Because to be honest I really dont feel that this Martha was the
daughter of John Sr and his 2nd wife Martha. But then that is just my "gut"
feeling. I have nothing to prove yea or nay.
On another subject I sure hope you have a great time at the reunion this
year if you are going. I will not be able to attend until probably next year. I
have been unemployed since January so money is a bit tight. haha. jackie

Dear Jackie,
No, there is no mention in the Salisbury, MA, vital records at least. I've
only come across a birth date for her "about" 1640.
Here's a thought: Was John, Jr.'s wife Mercy Page ever called Martha? The
reason I am asking is because John, Jr.'s daughter Mercy Clough was born 17 Mar
1690 in Salisbury, MA., and was noted in the East Parish Church record to
have been baptized 20 Sep 1691. If her birth date was moved up one year, it
would be 17 Mar 1691. Could the two Mercys been referred to as Marthas and the
date somehow in error?
Just another roving thought of mine.
Anyone else have any thoughts about John and Martha having a daughter, Martha
b. 17 March 1691???

Martha (nee BLAISDELL) (BOWDEN) (CILLEY) CLOUGH, daughter of tailor and
taverner Ralph (Ralfe) BLAISDELL and Elizabeth PARKER, is said to have been born
ca. 1640/42, so she was quite a bit younger than John CLOUGH. He certainly
could have fathered a child. Martha could have had a child at that age as it is
not unheard of, to be sure. However, the chances of the child being born with
birth defects would have been much greater. I cannot find a death record for
the Martha b. in 1691. My guess is that little Martha died very shortly after
birth, or died elsewhere and her death is recorded in other town records. She
is not mentioned in John, Sr.'s will as far as I can see, so my best guess is
that she died within a few months after birth.
Interestingly, John, Sr. sold real estate to Onessiphrus PAGE on 16 March
1691, and John's wife Martha signed off her dower rights to the property
(Source: Genealogy of John CLOUGH, Vol. I, p. 35). This was one day before the
child Martha CLOUGH was born to John and Martha, 17 Mar 1691.
Your secret cousin,
Linda
Linda
I have a question about your Martha - wife of John Sr. First of all you said
that they had a daughter in 1691 right? Well we all know for a fact that
John Sr was pretty old (which doesnt mean he couldnt father a child at that age
of course).
I guess what Im trying to find out here is just how old Martha was in 1691?
Could she have been young enough to have a child??
I do not have any of the Clough books in front of me so I do not have her
birthdate or even the date she died. I remember reading someplace that it was
thought they had more than one child during the marriage, (but cant remember
where I read it.) I thought maybe at that time though that it would have been
impossible at her age and that maybe her children were from her previous
marriage and he might have took them for his own. Does anyone even know where she is
buried (the first Martha)??
Just wondering. jackie

Dear Liz,
The Martha CLOUGH you are speaking about is the daughter of John & Jone:
Martha, d. John and Jone, 22: 1 m: 1654 (p. 51) (b. 22 Mar 1654).
**I accidentally put in the wrong birth date for this Martha as 1691 in the
last email, and I apologize to all.**
The Martha I am referring to is the birth entry for the daughter of John &
Martha:
Martha, d. John and Martha, Mar. 17, 1691 (p. 51)
Source: Salisbury, Mass., Vital Records to the End of the Year 1849.
Topsfield, Mass.: The Topsfield Historical Society, 1915.
These Marthas have two different mothers, Jone and Martha, but both were born
in Salisbury and both have the father listed as John CLOUGH.
The question is, were there any other John CLOUGHs in Salisbury married to a
Martha that had a child named Martha born in Salisbury in 1691? John, Jr. was
married to Mercy PAGE and they didn't have a daughter named Martha anyway
(unless John, Jr. was fooling around with a Martha on the side). John, Jr., had
a son named John, but John 3 didn't marry Elizabeth LONG until 1701 (unless he
was fooling around with a Martha before he married). Neither Thomas nor
Samuell had a son named John. Jonathan CLOUGH b. 1750 and wife Martha TRUE did
not have a daughter named Martha.
If no other John CLOUGHs married to a Martha were in Salisbury in 1691, then
John, Sr., and his second wife, Martha, must have had a daughter in 1691.
Again, I apologize for the date error in the previous email.
Your secret cousin,
Linda
Dear Clough Cousins,
Many thanks to all of you who have been sharing Clough information lately!
What a joy to see the list being utilized - for the benefit of Clough's seeking
information!
Perhaps with our recent exchanges we might actually find the true name of our
John's wife and maybe even her ancestry!
I fully intend to look through my Clough database for the benefit of those
who have been seeking additional Clough information through the list and
otherwise. Please forgive the amount of time it has been taking me to reply. With
finalizing details for the Second Clough Family Trip to Great Britain, working
full-time plus overtime, and periodic hospital visits to my brother I am sure
you can appreciate just how busy I have been.
In the meantime, let's continue these wonderful exchanges of Clough
information!
Best Wishes to All!

Linda,
I just looked at my Colonial Dames XVII application and under "Children of
Ancestor" my Mom has listed Martha as b. 22 Mar 1654 m. Cornelius Page. The
1691 may be a typo because you'll then see that Samuel is listed with a
birth date in line with the other siblings. btw, my application lists a
different birth year for John 1649, Martha 1654 and Samuel 1657...curious.

Dear Jackie & Cousins,
I have the book Salisbury, Mass., Vital Records to the End of the Year 1849.
Topsfield, Mass.: The Topsfield Historical Society, 1915.
John CLOUGH is mentioned with his wife Jone (not Jane) in the births of his
children under "Salisbury Births" (they are listed in the book in
alphabetical
order):
Elizabeth, d. John and Jone, 16: 10 m: 1642 (p. 49)
Mary, d. John and Jone, 30: 5 m: 1644 (p. 51)
Sarah, d. John and Jone, 28: 4 m: 1646 (p. 52)
John, s. John and Jone, 9: 1 m: 1648 (p. 50)
Thomas, s. John and Jone, 29: 3 m: 1651 (p. 52)
Martha, d. John and Jone, Mar. 17, 1691 (p. 51)
Samuell, s. John and Jone [Joannah. CT. R.], 20: 12 m: 1656 ( p. 51)
Ah, here is a clue under Samuell's birth record! "CT. R." is a book
abbreviation used for "court records, Essex Co. Quarterly Court." Whoever
our "Jane"
is sounds like she was called "Jone," a nickname for "Joannah." Nowhere in
the vital records book I have is she referred to as "Jane." I never heard
that
"Jane" is a shortened form of "Joannah." So perhaps we need to seek a record
for John CLOUGH who married Joannah Unknown in Essex County, MA.
Also, it is my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), that Essex County
was
once part of old Norfolk County, MA. Has anyone tried to find marriage
records from either Essex or Norfolk Co., MA? What about Joannahs born in
surrounding towns? Joannahs on passenger lists from England?
Salisbury, MA, was once a part of a common land called Colchester before 7
Oct 1640. Source: Salisbury, Mass., Vital Records to the End of the Year
1849.
Topsfield, Mass.: The Topsfield Historical Society, 1915, p. 4. From 1632
- 1640: Salisbury was part of Colchester Village, Massachusetts Bay Colony;
from 1640 - 1643: Salisbury Village, Massachusetts Bay Colony; from 1643 -
1692: Salisbury Village (Essex) Massachusetts Bay Colony.
>From the official Salisbury, MA, website: On September 6, 1638, Secretary
of
the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Simon Bradstreet, received an agreement from
Governor Winthrop and the General Court giving him and eleven other men the
right to begin a plantation north of the Merrimack River. This land grant
included
the towns of Amesbury and Merrimack, Massachusetts as well as the New
Hampshire towns of Seabrook, South Hampton, Newton, Hampstead, Plaistow and
Kingston.
This town, bordered by the Merrimack River and the Atlantic Ocean,
originally
named Colchester, was incorporated as Salisbury in 1640. Source:
http://www.salisbury-ma.com/History.html
Do any Colcester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, records exist? Are there any
Massachusetts Bay Colony marriage records at all?
What about Charlestown and Watertown, MA, marriage records?
Under "Salisbury Marriages":
If the book is an accurate copy, then there is no mention of a marriage of a
John CLOUGH to a Jane SANDERS, either listed under CLOUGH and its various
spellings or listed under SANDERS or SAUNDERS. So perhaps we need to look
elsewhere for a marriage record?
There is also no mention of John CLOUGH marrying his second wife, Martha M.
(nee BLAISDELL) (BOWDEN) CILLEY/SIBLEY, in this book. I checked under
headings
of BLAISDELL, BOWDEN, and all the listed spellings of CILLEY and CLOUGH. One
source stated that John CLOUGH and Martha married in Dover, Strafford Co.,
NH
(Secondaray source: "Vital Records of Dover, NH, 1686-1850 [Bowie, MD,
1977]: reprint of Collections of the Dover, NH, Historical Society, Volume
1.
Dover, 1894.) Martha's child Elizabeth BOWDEN by her first marriage was born
in
Boston (I have also seen Elizabeth stated to be a child of Martha's second
husband, Thomas [Richard] CILLEY); Martha's second husband died in Hampton,
Rockingham Co., NH, and one of Martha's sons by her second marriage, Thomas
CILLEY, died in Nottingham, Rockingham Co., NH. So it is at least possible
that
John CLOUGH married his second wife in NH, since her family had been there
and
they are not listed in the Salisbury marriage records.
My point in mentioning the above is this: would any New Hampshire marriage
records reveal John CLOUGH as a widower and his widow's maiden name?
Under the heading CLOUGH under "Salisbury Deaths":
John, sr., July 26, 1691 (p. 540)
Jone, w. John, sr., Jan. 16, 1679 (p. 540)
I cannot find the death of Martha (Martha M. (nee BLAISDELL) (BOWDEN)
(CILLEY/SIBLEY) CLOUGH, John, Sr.'s second wife, listed in the Salisbury
deaths.
This is just an add-on: I found this entry under the heading CLOUGH under "
Salisbury Births":
Martha, d. John and Martha, Mar. 17, 1691.
I don't have any other John CLOUGH's at that time married to a Martha except
John CLOUGH, Sr. John, Sr., was still alive at that time in 1691, so he
could
have fathered a child, even if he were older. I have second wife Martha
quite a bit younger than John, b. between 1640-1644 and d. bet.Apr
1681/1707. So
it would be possible that John's second wife Martha could have had a
daughter
named Martha in 1691. Does anyone have any other information about this
Martha CLOUGH b. in 1691?
Just a thought: Maybe this late birth was just too tramatic for John, Sr.?
He died four months later on 26 Jul 1691.
Your secret cousin,
Linda

Hello All
Several months ago I put in a query in regards to our Jane's maiden name on
Genalogy.com. Today I got a reply. I thought I would share this with everyone
in hopes that someone has actually seen the vital records of Salisbury and
can confirm or deny this as fact. Below is the reply that was sent me. jackie

Here is a list of places we have plans to visit and the reasons why we plan
to visit them:

Clark, at Sir Paul's home near Westminster for drinks.
- Visit Oxford Ancestors offices
- Visit Chester Cathedral (where Sir Richard Clough was trained as a
chorister)
- Visit the grounds of Plas Brondanw (last home of Clough Williams-Ellis - a
descendant of Sir Richard Clough and architect of Portmeirion)
- Portmeirion (built by Clough Williams-Ellis). We are planning an afternoon
tea with Dr. Sykes, his CEO, Dr. Ashworth, additional Sir Richard Clough
descendants, and Peter Clough (lives in north Wales - DNA showed Clough
connections with Owen Clough and Noreen Clough's families). The group, Dr. Sykes, and
Dr. Ashworth will stay at Portmeirion that same night.
- We have a couple open days of activities based on the weather. Some
options include Harlech Castle, Mt. Snowdon, Caenarfon Castle, etc.
- Glasfryn estate (owned by Jonathan Williams-Ellis, a Sir Richard Clough
descendant. His wife is the film producer who is working with me on getting
funding for a documentary). The group will tour their home and will stay on the
estate for two nights and do activities off the grounds during the day.
- Visit Brynbella (built by a descendant of Sir Richard Clough)
- Drive by Bach-y-Graig (built by Sir Richard Clough)
- Drive by Plas Clough (built by Sir Richard Clough and owned and lived in by
one of his descendants)
- Visit Berain (former home of Kathryn Tudor, wife of Sir Richard Clough)
- Visit St. Asaph Cathedral (Charles Butler Clough was a Canon)
- Visit St. Marcella's Church (where, it is said, Sir Richard Clough's heart
and possibly right hand were buried). This trip we will be able to see the
interior as well.
- Visit Denbigh Castle (in Sir Richard Clough's hometown)
- Denbighshire Record Office in Ruthin (they are doing a special exhibit on
Sir Richard Clough for my group)
- Visit the city of Oxford and/or the University
- Possibly visit Windsor Castle on our way back to London.
For our British list members, I hope you may be able to meet up with us along
our route! Please contact me about doing so as my group and I would very
much enjoy meeting as many of you as possible!
Best Wishes to All!
Sheila
I just want to take this time to wish all of our American members a very
Happy and Safe fourth of July.
I do not know if the Clough members from other countries are celebrating any
holiday this weekend but if so I hope it is also safe and happy for you as
well. Jackie

Remember: You Can Pick Your Friends, But God Gave You Your Relatives For A
Reason!
I am not a citizen of the U.S.A. so when I get an email which states 'say a prayer for the souls who got us here.
They were the corner stone and foundation of our great country and our
ancestry which binds us all.'- I feel a bit patronised, and it reinforces my general view of Americans
(of the U.S.A. variety), that their views of the world are very
national-centric. I am Australian and proud of my convict Clough ancestry,
however, if I wrote an email to the Clough forum about Anzac Day (25th
April), I think I would have the presence of mind and awareness to realize
that my email is going to go to people of other nations. The point of my
email is this:
Happy 4th of July to all the Yanks.
A significant number of the worlds population, excluding citizens of the
U.S.A., also receive emails.
I would have worded the message as follows: 'To my fellow Americans, please say a prayer for the souls who got us here. They were the corner
stone and foundation of our great country and our ancestry which binds us
all.' Pedantic you say - well maybe, but a little lesson in email
etiquette and cultural awareness never hurt anyone. Regards to all the
Cloughs out there in this big world of ours and I hope you have a happy
4th of July as well!

Subject: Re: [CLOUGH-GEN] Magazine Article on Clough's...
Dear Cousin,
I do know about Brian's great career. He was a terrific coach for
the
Notts. He lead that team like a real champ. He has taken ill from what I
understand.
Since we " Clough's" have had such a great impact on history, I do
hope to find others who have made contributions in the sports world.
Thanks for the information.
Happy " Fourth of July" to all the "Cloughs" out there. May we take
the
time out of our celebrations to say a prayer for the souls who got us
here.
They were the corner stone and foundation of our great country and our
ancestry which binds us all.
Love Ronnie
