Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Rebecca and Cousins,
I've sent this message to the list in case anyone else is as interested in
Huguenot's as you are.
I found a listing for a book entitled, "History of the Huguenot Emigration to
America" by Charles W. Baird. The listing is in the newest catalog of Willow
Bend and Heritage Books, Inc. (www.HeritageBooks.com or
www.WillowBendBooks.com).
The blurb about the book says:
"This two-volume set follows the coming of the French Protestants to the New
World, and their establishment along the eastern seaboard of the United
States. An authority on the subject, Baird leads us through this movement to
the events that led to the more considerable emigration at the end of the
17th century. Topics covered in this extremely thorough work include:
Attempted Settlements in Brazil and Florida, Under the Edict: Arcadia and
Canada, New Netherlands, The Antilles, Approach of the Revocation, and The
Revocation: Flight from La Rochelle and Aunis, The Revocation: Flight from
Saintonge, Poitou and Touraine, Flight from the Northern Provinces, Flight
from the Eastern and Southern Provinces, the Refuge: England, the Emigration:
On the High Seas, the Settlement: Boston, Oxford, Rhode Island, and
Connecticut. Both Appendices contain interesting letters: Letters from
Minister Richer and Chartier to Calvin, from Villegagnon to Calvin, and
Judith Manigault's Letter. The Appendices also contain: the Commission of
Henry IV to De Monts with translation, the Petition of the Walloons and
French, the Mascarene Papers, a narrative of a French Protestant Refugee in
Boston, and a Huguenot Pastor's Discourse. (1885) reprint, 354 pp. & 448
pp., 2 vols., illus., maps, append., original indices, paper."
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Dear Cousins,
At the end of last year I treated myself to digital cable so that I may view
the BBC America TV channel among other very informative history and discovery
type channels.
This morning on the show "Antique's Roadshow" (of course the British version
as opposed to the American version which can be seen on some public TV
channels) they showed some parts of north Wales that I plan to bring the
group in September! Among the places they showed were the western Wales
coastline, a slate mine, views of Mount Snowdon, the Mount Snowdon Railway,
Porthmadog, and, last but not least, Portmeirion! It was certainly wonderful
to see video of the place we will be staying! :-)
Just as a reminder: Portmeirion is an Italian style villa built by Clough
Williams-Ellis, a descendant of Sir Richard Clough.
If I can pull it off, I am hoping to create a gathering of as many of our
British Clough descendant cousins as possible while we are at Portmeirion.
Today is the deadline for the trip head count so please contact me, if you
haven't already, if you desire to go.
Best wishes to all! :-)
Sheila
Sheila,
Count Martha and me as going.

Dear Cousins,
Just a reminder: I need a final head count for the trip no later than Jan. 31.
Also, let me reiterate:
- For those making their own air arrangements to and from London, those
arrangements are YOUR responsibility, not mine, should anything happen.
- For those flying into Boston to meet with me, those arrangements are YOUR
responsibility.
- For those of you flying in and out of Boston with me, I will take care of
your air arrangements.
As we live in a very imperfect world, and we seem to be on the brink of war,
please know that whatever arrangements you make on your own are YOUR
responsibility. Everyone going on the trip will receive from me information
for trip insurance. This insurance, however, should you choose to take it,
will only cover the part of the trip I and the travel agent are putting
together. I highly recommend that everyone have some sort of travel
insurance for the trip - for both the group portion and individual portions -
especially since we are living in pretty precarious times.
The travel agent is working on getting us the best hotel deals possible at
the moment. When I find out what hotels we will be staying in I will let the
group know in a group e-mail, not an e-mail to this list.
When the travel agent has given me a final cost per person, double occupancy,
I will let everyone know the general price in an e-mail to the group, not an
e-mail to this list. However, for those needing special arrangements, the
price will be higher.
In the months to come, when I have worked out our full itinerary, I will let
the group know the itinerary in a group e-mail, not an e-mail to the list.
I have tried to be quite clear about all aspects of this trip either in
e-mail sent to this list, e-mail sent to individuals seeking further
information, via phone, etc. However, I am here to answer any additional
questions any of you may have so please feel free to contact me with any
comments or questions at any time.
Here in the Northeast we are going on 16 days of subfreezing temps. I hope
everyone is keeping warm! :-)
Best wishes to all! :-)

Dear Cousins,
I was just received some cemetery information today from a 'distant' cousin
in Mt. Vernon, ME, I met while in New England last summer after the Clough
Reunion. She is a descendant of Hannah Clough b. 31 Aug 1718 Salisbury, MA,
m. Nathaniel Whittier b. 1711 Salisbury, MA, d. 1784 Winthrop, ME. Thought I
would share this with you. Most of these are my Cloughs and a few of their
descendants, but you never know when you might be related.
First a little history: Chase Clough, 1781-1868 (my gggg grandfather), son
of Simon Clough and Mary Avery, being named after his grandmother, Patience
Chase, at some time left his birthplace of Gilmanton, NH (we visited there
also), and moved to Mt. Vernon in Kennebec County, Maine, where several of
his cousins had preceded him. He married, lived, had his children, died and
was buried in Mt. Vernon. Many other Cloughs are also buried in the area
there, and some Clough families still reside in Mt. Vernon (met two).
The small town of Mt. Vernon was named after the home of Pres. George
Washington. Settlers from New Hampshire began coming to the area about 1774.
The town was initially named Washington Plantation, but in 1792 it was
incorporated as Mt. Vernon with a document I did get to see, signed by John
Hancock himself! The town is located 20 miles from Waterville and Farmington,
and 20 miles northwest of Augusta, the capital of Maine. It is very rural,
very New England, and has many small lakes and lots of old cemeteries.
Taylor Yard (cemetery) is located on the right side of Route 41 going from
Mt. Vernon, ME, towards Readfield, ME, in west Mt. Vernon, ME. It is a short
distance beyond a tall chimney which was once a part of a tannery which
burned in 1912. Unfortunately I did not get to visit this particular
cemetery when I was there, because I was unable to obtain records and we
didn't know at the time where in the world Chase Clough was buried (my
husband was probably most thankful for not getting drug off to yet another
New England graveyard). I do not know how readable the stones in this
cemetery are at present.
A few Cloughs buried in Taylor Yard are:
Chase Clough d. 23 Dec 1868 (84 y) and his wife Lydia (Taylor) Clough d. 17
Dec 1835 (52 y)
Their children:
Betsey Clough d. 7 Nov 1871 (67 y) and her husband Capt. Samuel Taylor b. 6
Feb 1800; d. 24 Dec 1874 (74 y)
Moses T. Clough d. 28 Aug 1888 (63 y 6 m) and his wife Eliza Unknown d. 19
Apr 1889 (62 y 1 m)
Children of Capt. Samuel Taylor and Betsey Clough:
Mary G. Taylor d. 2 May 1820 (13 m)
Lydia A. Taylor d. 22 May 1870 (31 y) wife of Albert Richardson
Children of Moses T. Clough and Eliza Unknown:
Charity Levella Clough d. 18 Oct 1873 (21 y) and her husband E. M. Billington
Willie W. Clough 1859 - 1907
LaForest C. Clough d. 29 Nov 1858 (1 y 11 m 10 d)
And I don't know who these Cloughs are:
Samuel Clough d. 1 Aug 1907 (age 98 y 3 m) and his wife Alice J. Unknown d. 4
July 1872 (55 y)
Charles E. Clough d. 20 July 1863 (23 y)--GAR marker--Vol. in 3rd ME Regt.

If you know of any corrections or additions to any of this information I
would welcome it!

Linda

Dear Cousins,
If you have sent me e-mail's in the past with requests/information and I have
yet to respond to you please note that I lost a hard drive many months ago.
I have tried desperately to have the information retrieved from it but to no
avail. Therefore, there are many, many e-mail's with Clough information that
are now lost. This is the main reason I ask family members to submit their
information to me via US mail.
When I have the time, I will be getting to all of the information that has
been sent to me via US mail. In the meantime, please be patient as there is
a lot of information to go through and I have a lot of 'irons in the fire'
right now between working full-time at my State job, working part-time for
Oxford Ancestors, putting together September's trip, other odds and ends, and
trying to have something of a personal life once in a while.
Please continue to send along your requests and/or latest information on your
Clough line(s) and I will continue to respond when I am able.
Best wishes to all!

Dear Cousins,
At the following web address (http://www.gmilne.demon.co.uk/kath.htm) you may
view a picture of Katheryn of Berain, wife of Sir Richard Clough.
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Dear Cousins,
St. Marcella's Church is where it is said the heart, and possibly hand, of
Sir Richard Clough are buried. After his death in Germany in 1570 they were
sent back to St. Marcella's.
The church is also where an effigy of John Salusbury can be found. John
Salusbury was the first husband of Katheryn of Berain, whose second husband
was Sir Richard Clough.
At this web address (http://www.clwydfhs.org.uk/churches/DenbighMarcella/)
you may view a picture of St. Marcella's Church. It is one of the places I
hope to bring the group in September. Our first group in October 2001 was
able to stop by the church the day we toured Denbigh and Ruthin. However, I
am hoping to be able to get a hold of someone who may be able to let us have
a look inside.
Best wishes to all!
Sheila
Sheila,
That's fine with Martha and me.

Dear Liz,
I do not have a price for the trip yet. I told the travel agent that I would
like to see the price around $1,200 per person (not including airfare) as
that was the price on our last trip. However, this is a different travel
agency with different contacts.
I certainly hope you are able to go this time as the dates I chose fit your
work schedule. :-)
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Dear Dean and Martha,
The usual hotel rates are about half what we have gotten the rooms at
Portmeirion for. Adding the extra night will certainly add to the total.
Hope this helps.
Best Wishes,
Sheila
