Hi Cousins,
I did a Sandy Lyman Clough search on Google and found this issue of Tea
Magazine. Looks like Sandy is quite a prolific illustrator (many books to
her credit) and from a long line of artists. Unfortunately, this Issue 29
is not available for back order.

Dear Sheila,
Thank you for the article. Well Sir Richard is a huge hit at " The
Cloisters." I was up in the library scanning a copy for my boss and forget
about it, the staff became very interested. The copies are circulating the
museum. Here we go again, my department thinks a gallery should be named for
our family, yeah after I hit the lottery and give them a real big
donation!!!! Have a great holiday weekend.

Sheila, Trip sounds good so far. We may need to meet you over there, as we
may be traveling elsewhere in Europe after we've finished the Wales tour.
Late Sept., early Oct. is okay, though if I were hoping to use my frequent
flyer points I would go after Oct. 15 when the rate drops from 60,000 to
40,000 points on both Delta and American. But I'm sure you'll shop around
for the cheapest possible rates too. Perhaps we could leave with you and be
allowed to extend and stay longer on our tickets. Just keep us posted.
We're off tomorrow for England. Spoke with Rebecca this morning and we're
all set to meet Fri. night for dinner and Sat. morning for the Petticoat
Lane,etc., tour. More later. Susan
Please add us to your growing list of Cloughs who want a copy of the London
article.
Thanks, Fred Clough

Dear Cousins,
I have sent e-mail's with the article in an attachment to all who requested
it. If anyone else would like a copy (or I forgot to send to someone who
requested) please feel free to contact me.
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Dear Cousins,
I will be sending trip information to the list via my TouringBritain e-mail
address, as I did yesterday. This helps me to keep the trip business
seperate from genealogy so please do not delete e-mails from TouringBritain
if you want updates on the trip.
For those of you that deleted yesterday's TouringBritain e-mail I have
included it at the end of this e-mail since it has vital information about
next years trip.
Best Wishes to All! :-)

Dear Cousins,
After speaking to the travel agent in England this morning we came up with
the following:
- It will make more sense for us to meet at a centralized location here in
the US - Boston is probably the better option. This way we will be a
cohesive group from the beginning and a bus can pick us up at the airport in
London. The trip price will include the airfare from Boston but you will
have to get yourselves to Boston. If this proves too costly then we can
discuss it. However, having family members arrive in London on different
airlines, at different times, and at different airports could prove to be
much more of a headache than it is worth since so many more things can go
wrong. I understand that family members may wish to fly certain airlines for
mileage but the task of 'rounding everybody up' may prove very difficult,
especially if flights are delayed or canceled.
- We should probably leave the US on a Tuesday or Wednesday to arrive the
following morning. We can leave from London one week after arriving or
extend the trip to 10 or 11 days. The length of the trip is totally up for
discussion so your input is important. The dates are also up for discussion.
We can go at the end of September if family members would rather. However,
the most cost effective dates need to be AFTER Sept. 15 and the best weather
option dates should be BEFORE Oct. 15.
- Our general outline thus far is:
Day 1 - Arrival in London. Tour bus picks us up at the airport and drives us
to Oxford. Have a tour of Oxford University and/or the city. Visit the
offices of Oxford Ancestors. Perhaps I can get Dr. Sykes to meet with the
group. Stay just outside Oxford that night.
Day 2 - Head to our northern Wales destination (as yet to be determined).
The rest of the days in northern Wales will include: meeting Williams-Ellis
family members; having tea with Ann Davies at Plas Clough in Denbigh;
hopefully seeing other family manors; and visiting tourist areas.
What northern Wales sites would you like to see? Some of the ideas I have
come up with thus far include: Snowdon Mountain Railway, Harlach Castle, Plas
Mawr, a Roman fort, and Celtica. The trip is for you to enjoy so please
contribute your ideas.
We can choose to stay in one place the whole time we are in Wales or we can
choose a couple different locations. We may be able to stay at Portmeirion
and/or a Williams-Ellis manor home. These things will be worked out in the
next several months. However, I wish to receive your input on all of this as
well.
On the next to last day of the trip we would head out of Wales and into
England to get closer to London and possibly stay just outside Oxford again.
If any family members are interested in taking a train from Wales to London
instead please let me know. If we did this as a group there are several
things to consider when trying to keep a group together.
OR - if family members would like a little longer trip we may wish to stay in
London for a couple days to do tourist things there. I am sure Rebecca would
be willing to do the walk-about for family members that were not on last
years trip.
The last day of the trip we would head back to the US.
Some additional things to think about:
- The school systems in Great Britain have 'Half Term' starting October 14
and last about a week. This means that tourist areas will be more crowded
and hotel prices will be higher during this time. I highly suggest we head
home before the children (and a lot of their parents) set out on school
holiday.
In order to minimize the traffic on the list you may wish to send your
replies to TouringBritain(a)aol.com instead of to the list. However, if you
have suggestions that you feel the family members would benefit from then
please feel free to reply to the list.
Again, YOUR suggestions are important so please feel free to contribute.
Best Wishes,
Sheila
Dear Sheila,
Oh, No, Cuz, I sent both Ciro and my niece Kerrie to find the article
at Barnes and Noble. They couldn't get it. HELP!!!!!!!!! They didn't have the
newspaper. Dying to see this article.
Love Ronnie
Sorry to be so long answering. I moved and it took a week to get the phone
and e-mail back on. Of course I'll check it out the Jaine Clough in Bolton
and let you know what I find. I'm going to London again on the 29th and
will have a little time to poke around Southwark also for the "south of
London" reference. It's only London Bridge that separates the two places.
Talk to you later. Becky
Dear Cousins,
This note and the information I put in the next 'Clough Society' bulletin is
to 'officially' offer family members a Clough/Cluff Family Trip to England
and Wales for Fall 2003.
Our distant Williams-Ellis family members as well as Ann Davies (all
descendants of Sir Richard Clough) are looking forward to entertaining us
American Clough cousins again. The Williams-Ellis family are the owners of
the manor Glasfryn and are the keepers of some family artifacts. Ann Davies
owns and lives in the manor Plas Clough, built by Sir Richard Clough. I
spoke to Ann this morning and she is thrilled to have us over for tea! :-)
Richard Williams-Ellis is trying to obtain the family homestead of his uncle,
Clough Williams-Ellis, Plas Brondanw. It has been unoccupied for many years
now but he would like to obtain it to fix it up and allow groups like ours to
stay there. If this can be worked out then we may have a manor to stay in
while in Wales! :-)
Clough Williams-Ellis was a famous architect and one of his most famous
accomplishments was Portmeirion. In fact, Portmeirion is still run by family
members today. I spoke to Clough Williams-Ellis' grandson this morning and
we may work out something whereby we could stay at Portmeirion and meet his
side of the family. He saw the article in The Independent and is looking
forward to connecting with his distant American cousins in October 2003.
So far we have a lot of enthusiasm from our distant Welsh cousins who are
looking forward to meeting us! :-)
There are many family homesteads that can be seen in northern Wales as well
as typical tourist spots including castles and the like. Please think about
the wonderful experiences you will have on our next family trip and let me
know if you would like to join us. When sending inquiries and the like about
the trip please use the following e-mail address so that I may keep the
genealogy info and the trip info separate: TouringBritain(a)aol.com.
I look forward to hearing from many of you! :-)

Hi Liz,
"Is Fall better than Spring?" I probably won't have enough earned time (time
off) by the Spring of 2003 to be able to lead a group. That is one reason I
mentioned Fall of next year. Besides, I figured it would allow family
members enough time to save up the needed funds.
If enough family members are interested in a Spring trip instead I may be
able to pull it off but I would need a list of everyone interested in a
Spring trip fairly soon. :-)
